Dulplicate layerr from a cropped image
I'm a new ON1 user and am having a problem duplicating a layer which has been cropped. The new, duplicate layer, retains those portions of the image I thought I'd cropped out. I'm using PR 2020 but had the same issue before updating from 2019 so think this is most likely a user error. Any helpful comments will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ray,
Can you provide a step-by-step procedure for duplicating the problem you are having please? I am not able to replicate it on my system. If I know what you are doing I can try to duplicate it more easily and possibly see where you may be going wrong or identify a bug that should be reported.

Hi Brian.
I chose an unedited RAW file, did a few minor edits including cropping to 8.5 x 11 format, then duplicated the layer. The duplicate layer has all edits except the crop.
I'm trying to replicate the steps of an exercise on Layer Basics in Scott Davenport's ebook, ON1 Photo Raw Essentials 6th edition, and it works just as described if I use an uncropped image, but has been a sticking point for several months when I try it with an cropped image. I was hoping to get past this in the updated version of the software but since it occurs in both, I suspect user error & that I'm overlooking a step.
I have several years experience with LR, but have rarely glanced at PS or tried to work with layers and am hopeful there's a solution for this. At any rate, thank you very much for your interest and response!

I am still unable to duplicate the problem on my Mac. Would it be possible for you to post your raw file with its sidecar files somewhere I can download them to take a look at what is going on? Zip the raw with its associated .on1 and .xmp files together then post that on a web sharing site like Dropbox or Google Drive and post the download link and I'll take a look at it to see if I see the uncropped layer too.
What you have described should work.

Thank you again Brian. I'll try to recreate the situation and send the zipped files as you've asked but will also warn you that I'm old and not particularly "computer savvy" so expect that it will take me quite a while. I'll add that I'm on a PC which I purchased primarily to run this program.

This is very strange, cropping isn't applied to layers, it's applied at the very end of the pipeline.
From page 9...
When working with multiple layers, steps 1 through 7 are applied for each layer, with the bottom layer at the
bottom of the ‘stack’, and the topmost layer at the top. After all the layers’ edits have been applied, Photo
RAW adds any text, followed by cropping and rotation information, to complete the document pipeline. Will be interesting to see Ray's workflow.

Brian I hope this works. I processed two files identically with the exception that on the second one I applied a crop before any other edits. I've included the original RAW files, the sidecars, and the exported jpegs. As you'll see, on the cropped file 5A4238 the borders aren't uniform as on the uncropped 5A4327. I've tried different size crops and export settings with essentially the same results. I can't rule out that I'm doing something wrong, but the uncropped file performed just as the example in Scott Davenport's book. I hope this is the information you requested, and once again, thank you (and Rick) for your interest.

That worked great, thanks.
From what I can see, you don't appear to be using the Crop Tool. When I look under the Settings menu the Reset Crop command is not available to remove any cropping of the image.
One thing you should be doing is using the command Layer > Align Visible Layers. That alone may fix the issues you are having.

Good morning Brian.
I'll look again, but the first edit on 4328 was to apply the desired crop using the crop tool in the tool well, but I definitely haven't been using Layer>Align Visible Layers. I'll try both and hopefully get the results I'm looking for.
As always, thank you for your response. This has been very confusing to me and I'm eager to get past it!

Let us know how it goes.

I will Brian. I think it's going to take me quite a while to figure out what I'm doing wrong, but when I do I'll let you know.

How exactly did you crop the image in the layer Scaled? I've tried various methods to replicate what you've done and I am unable to do so.

Just looking at these files now. On the 5A4238 I see the 16x9 off-centred crop. When the crop tool is active, I don't see Reset Crop available in the menu, but it is active after I leave the crop tool either by applying it or clicking away from it.
Going back to the original question, Ray, when are you seeing the areas that you thought were cropped?
When you apply a crop, it affects the whole layer stack at once. It's not just the ONE layer that you selected that gets cropped. So when you create a duplicate layer, you should not initially see anything different. However, if you select transform and move either layer around, those edges are still there and the layers can all be moved individually allowing you to align them.
If you then select the Crop tool, you will see the whole visible project with the selected Crop outlined allowing you to change it. Nothing was actually cut off during the previous crop because it's not the layer that was cropped, it was the Layer stack as viewed from the top down.
Does any of that help?

I've found that simply selecting the Crop tool will create a crop setting even if the image is not actually cropped.

It appears that what Ray is experiencing with a crop layer is a known issue:
- Crop is getting ignored when adding the cropped photo as a layer
I remember having a similar experience where I cropped and image and added it as a layer and the crop was ignored

Thank you George. (Rick & Brian as well)You describe my problem with a lot less words than I was able to! Do you remember what the solution was? I've been using Photo Raw often but find other problems so haven't gone back to that scenario.

The solution in this case would be to Export the cropped image then add that as a new layer.

Thank you Brian. I'll revisit this later and let you know if it works. The project was an attempt to follow an exercise in Scott Davenport's book so perhaps I overlooked a step.

Yes, if I remember correctly, I exported the layer as a jpg and the crop was saved and then applied the saved jpg as a layer

Success! I was able to apply the border correctly after exporting the cropped file. My normal workflow is to crop before any other edits which has been the tripping point with this exercise. Thank you for pointing out a solution.
