In 'effects' you can add a border, change its opacity and size (and lots of other stuff).
You can choose the style (rounded, square, black, white etc.) and if to adjust the image.

All in all lots of possibilities.

Thanks for this new info. I must ask an other thing. How do you apply an effect like this on an existing photo. My purpose is to achieve a fading mask on the image so that the edges blend with the background.a fading mask on the image so that the edges blend with the background.

Put your background on a Layer below your image then add that mask to the image Layer's mask.

or... turn it into a template by making the white area transparent and exporting it as a png. Then just add it as a layer or texture over any image.

If you follow Rick's advice, you can create your own Border effect with it.

To create your own border you have to use the Extras Manager and choose the type Borders then Import your png and tell it where to save the new border. Page 20 of the User Guide explains how top import extras.

    Thanks

This so far if I have followed your instructions correctly only effects the border and there again effects the border evenly. What I really need, but could not explain clear enough, is Gradient type 'boarder' which fades the edges of the photo out on all 4 sides.

No, you haven't understood correctly. Both Brian and I are explaining how to use the borer that YOU created above. It's already a gradient, you just need to take it further. Read our posts again.

Edit: Re-reading your comment, if you're saying that you want the PHOTO to fade and not the border, that's a different story. You'll need to apply a mask to your photo to do that, not a border. You'll need 4 gradients on the edges and I'm pretty sure we've already had a disscussion on how to do that.

Edited again: I can't find the examples that I know I've already posted, I can make new examples, but not untill I get home later this afternoon.

    Ok Thanks

I can do it only partially up and down. If I add left or right the last one up or down done disappears.

With the previous experimental using the 'Manage extras' I could only achieve this

You can't add a pre-defined border to your photo to make the edges transparent because only a mask will do that and you can't make a mask and save it to use later either. BUT! There might be a work around...

I'm assuming this is what you're after. All four edges are faded to show the white color fill layer below it.

This is achived by adding four masking bugs on the edges. The one on the top is added first and each additional one is one is rotated +90 degrees in order, Right, Bottom and Left.

That will give you the result, but how can you save it to use again? Well, you CAN save a mask if it's attached to a filter.

Note: This will only work on an uncropped photo because the mask is applied to the canvas and ignores the crop.

So, Open any filter, Curves is a good one because it doesn't change anything by default. Add the masking bugs as above.

Then save it as a Preset with a name like Faded Edge Mask. Enable Apply Masks but with nothing else selected...

To use it, add the Faded Edge Mask Preset, copy the mask from the Curves filter then paste it onto your layer. You can then delete the un-needed Curves filter.

    Voila!

    Thanks Rick

I got this first part of it.

The second task is not quite clear how I copy the mask to the Curves Mask, but after a nights sleep I think it will be ok.

When viewing the masking controls by clicking the mask preview you'll see the Copy/Paste buttons as shown in Rick's screen capture above. Open the mask preview for the Curves filter and Copy it then open the preview for the Layer and Paste it in

As Rick said, any cropping will be ignored and the mask pasted according to the canvas. If you have already cropped the image, remove the crop, do the copy/paste for the mask, then redo the crop.
