on1 noise reduction vs lightroom 6
I've been using lightroom 6 for years and quite happy with it. Definitely not into the adobe subscription mode (not going to happen) so looking for alternatives. Tried ON1 a few times and what always turned me off is the noise reduction feature. Compared to lightroom it looks poor. Don't need to discuss that the original picture was take with a lot of noise. Lightroom seems to make it nicer ( showing the noise-slider at 12 and 50). Obviously 50 is a lot softer, but it's way more usable than the flecks of color produced by ON1.
Updated/Purchased to ON1 2020 when I saw the noise functionality was improved assuming I'd finally get the results from LR6, but so far disappointing. This is the major thing keeping me from switching over entirely ( and with LR6 being older, at some point the decision will be forced to move 'elsewhere').
How can I get similar results to lightroom6 with ON1 2020?

Same raw picture, imported in both LR6 and ON1-2020, exported in 20Mpix as png and cropped to be roughly the same size.
On1
- Tone & Color: AI Auto
- Tone & Colors -> High (preset)
Lightroom 6
- "Auto" and noise reduction to 12
Lightroom 6
- "Auto" and noise reduction to 50 (too extreme, but just to show the difference)

Pretty much all we know about On1s noise capabilities is in this video.

There are other videos available if you're a plus member.

Have you seen Scott Davenport's short tutorial on On1 noise reduction? His stuff is always worth watching.

Ditto Anthony Morganti, who promised me a tutorial on this a while back but hasn't delivered so far:

I have some photos taken at extremely high ISO levels and the only programme that even began to handle them was Topaz Denoise AI. You can get a month's free trial to see if it does a better job for you than the other two.

DITO what Ray states above about Topaz DeNoise AI, just watched the video for the up date to PR 2020 and really was hoping that maybe On1 would have incorporated AI tech into there noise reduction to run along side AI match/auto. Russ

The same experience
The RAW files show also more noice before starting develop , my interpretation.Searching my way on this item and learn from video tutorials is now my lockdown work

been using On1 for a while and while I hate subscription models, I've paid for each of the last 3 or 4 yrs for ON1... it's a fine product and I've generally stopped using LR6, but there are gaps. Noise is being a fundamental one and I wish they would focus on this vs some of the other things they're focusing on. There was a mild improvement in 2020, but it really isn't as good as LR6 which is dated. I'm not entirely sure I'll continue to renew to newest version if they do not address the noise reduction challenges.

Topaz Denoise AI has just had a significant upgrade, to include masking. It's on discount currently and if you also use one of the blogger's coupons you get it for less than 50USD. I now use it when I need to and have abandoned Lightroom completely.

thank you and I am looking but really that should be something they should focus on vs some of the other things that seem to be on their plate. Noise control should be a core part of photo editors, not an additional payed module. and to be clear this has been an issue since 2017, I've been hopeful each version and they claim it's improved but to be honest it isn't much better. The new version tends to make it blurry if you're not careful.
a quick look at a demo of topaz also seems to indicate I can't do their denoise as part of my workflow.. I likely have to finish.. export and then use topaz.. silly

No, I use both Topaz Sharpen and Denoise as part of my workflow. Both can be called from inside On1. I usually use them before I start editing, Some like to do it after.

well thank you for info and it seems to be decent, but still seems like a work around workflow wise.

The major issue I see with the 2020 noise reduction version is that it doesn't address Chroma noise satisfactorily and Luminance Noise reduction, although manageable, is quite destructive above 60.
The latest iteration of DeNoise from Topaz seems to have improved dramatically, especially with High ISO images. But, be carefull, don't apply NR or Sharpening before passing to DeNoise AI as it will throw the Auto settings out.
