Is 2020.1 a free upgrade to current owners?

It's a free upgrade if you own 2020. It's not free if you own 2019 or earlier.

The new highlight recovery is pretty sweet. And the enhanced map functions are nice too.

    Regarding the new On1 release, 14.1.0.8739 :

Currently using 14.0.1.8289 without much problem.  Wondering 14.1 is worth the effort of an update.  New features seem ho-hum. for my usage -- perhaps the enhanced  "highlight recovery" might be of value.  What are your thoughts on On1 new features?

At each new release my major concerns are performance and stability.  Are users seeing any improvement or degradation in these areas, relative to 14.0 ?

    Your comments much appreciated.  Thanks

It is absolutely worth it. Performance has been improved as well as the things mentioned in the announcement. I've been testing it for a couple of weeks and I haven't had any new problems except new Filters are added in a closed state so you have to expand them before you can use them. I reported it during testing.

Thanks Brian for your quick response -- came within 5 min of my posting.  Sounds encouraging.  I'll give it a try.  Is there an official download site?

Download site link is in the top post.

I just installed 2020.1 on both laptop and PC.  After what appeared to be successful installations, neither program will open.  Not a good start.  Of course it removed the 2020 version.  Thoughts?

    1. Did you download the installer or use the upgrade process built into the program? I would download the installer if for no other reason than you have one should something like this happen.
    2. Were logged into an administrator's account when you ran the update?

If you haven't already, I would download the installer from your account or just grab the trial version from the front page of the ON1.com site and run it from an administrator account.

Yesterday I tried upgrading and it seemed to hang (not responding) possibly because installation took longer than Windows was expecting response. I broke it off.

Today, I downloaded the upgrade version. I noticed an .exe.download file in my download folder with equal size of the downloaded .exe files. Running installation (replacing the existing version) proceeded without problem and OPR 2020.1 started without problems.

2020.1 is definitively a lot faster andmore responsive and is well worth the update. Unfortunately, my four main issues which I have been waiting so long for are not fixed, namely the annoying circles when attempting to move sliders or crop with the Wacom pen and Windows ink is checked (only ON1 has this issue), support for my Nikon Coolpix A1000, support for my TAMRON 100-400 F/4.5-6.3 DI VC USD A035 lens (not too important as there is little distortion) and there is still a 14-image limit for focus stacking. Maybe they don’t have full control over some issues due to using 3rd party modules, but still. All-in-all a pretty decent update.

Installed OK and seems to run a bit faster. Two things so far:

    • Annoyingly, effects have to be expanded after they are added which adds extra time to the editing process.
    • Using an external editor (Topaz Mask AI) still crashes while ON1 is cataloguing. ON1 has to be closed before Topaz can be used.

Installed without any issues but on my Windows 10 it is very slow compared to the previous version, wondering whether to completely uninstall using script then reinstall but then will have to let the catalogs rebuild.

    My first opinions:

Still Map view displays only one photo location, instead I'd liked much more getting a Map displaying all the locations for the photos from one folder, as in Apple Photos and many other photo softwares; still Map view is inside ON1 but click on GPS opens navigator and googmaps; why two kind of maps ?

Still not opening grey profiles, nor psd...

The french translation is quite ok now, but the user guide remains "coming soon" (since november 2019 !)

    Otherwise no problem.

Map view can display the location for only one image. If you have more than one selected it shows the "super-selected" image. If you'd like to see all locations for the photos being displayed you should add it to the ON1 Photo RAW Project page.

I added this wish to the ON1 project about 1 year ago !

You should be able to work with psd files as long as they are in an RGB colorspace. I'm able to see and work with mine.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Just loaded 2020.1.  Seems to run just fine -- certainly no worse that 2020.0.   A pleasant surprise.  On1 continues to improve.  Now to gather the courage to use Browse for full image management -- always a problem area in the past.

Nigel, make sure your graphics are still set right before reinstalling.

Yay! 24 hours later and my catalogs have finally finished. Now I can finally start checking out the new stuff.

    Addendum:

After running for 24 hours cataloging has gone from 30% back to 8.0% and is now at 1.0%. It has so far crashed Topaz AI Mask, Topaz AI sharpen and Topaz AI Denoise.

It has stopped running smoothly and runs in fits and starts, sometimes stopping the whole computer for minutes on end. If I force quit ON1 everything returns to normal. If I restart ON1 it everything returns to normal for about five minutes then the madness begins again.

I am running an iMac Retina 5K 27-inch late 2014 with 32GB of ram. Catalogue scratch files are on a 500GB external SSD drive, images on a 10TB external drive.

Even before this update I have over and over again deleted and restarted cataloguing many, many times. I have combed through every single image in my library and removed everything but raw or jpg files. I have checked every one of them and none are corrupt or damaged. The only thing that brings this madness to an end is to delete cataloging and not restart it.

I stand by my continuing belief that ON1 cataloging has been engineered by satan.

    I completely agree!

Catalog has always been (and probably continues to be) a performance hog.  Runs in the background and sucks up all resources.  All editing seems to work fine (for me) when Browse DAM remains unused..

ON1 is not causing any other program to crash. If other programs are crashing while your systems resources are being consumed by ON1 that isn't the fault of ON1. The programs that crash should better handle low memory situations.

I use cataloging without any problems whatsoever. At first I did have problems and just last month I had to rebuild my catalogs and the process hung because of a tiff file that every other program I own could open without any problems. I removed that file and the cataloging process completed. When I put the file back cataloging kicked in again as it recognized the "new" file but it finished immediately. I don't know why it hung on that particular file or why moving out of the catalog and back in fixed the problem but it did.

If you look you can find the files causing the problem and fix it.

You have missed the point entirely, Brian.

This isn’t about your system it’s about those systems that are not working, we all know by now that your’s is perfect. It’s about how cataloguing interferes with the day to day operation of systems that are running multiple tasks. This is what computers do, and when another program interferes with the integrity of that multi-tasking something is wrong. You can blame it on every other piece of software if you want but you would be incorrect to do so.

ON1 claim that cataloguing ‘runs in the background’, it’s own selling blurb makes that claim, but it is clearly untrue; yes Topaz AI apps are processor intensive but when they are running then they should have the focus of the computing system, ON1 cataloguing dies not withdraw its claim on resources which is how a true background operation should behave, it does not withdraw even when its own editing program is evoked.

if this behaviour is fundamental to the way cataloguing is designed then it is poor design, at least it should have a method of suspension even if that method is operator instigated, an ‘off’ button if you like. I’ve said before that the ON1 editor is probably the best that money can buy but it is bundled with this poorly designed piece of software which since its inception has been causing so much heartache for so many buyers, you only have to look back through these forums to see how true that is. Yes, it works well for many, but it also causes problems for others and saying in effect my system is OK so it must be yours’ is not a way forward.

I realize that this is about those systems that are not working. This is exactly why I keep explaining how I fixed my system that was not working but is now. I never said my system is perfect.

Cataloging is clearly running in the background or you would not be able to do anything else with the program while the cataloging process is running. Could it be throttled better to lessen the impact on system resources? Yes, I think it could but that does not make it a foreground process.

People have a choice, they can try the recommendations made by users attempting to help them or not, it's up them. If they don't want to try the suggestions then they loose credibility as they keep complaining that something doesn't work when it clearly does for so many others.

Is it correct that any cataloging disruption is a function of the number of items that are cataloged?  I'm thinking of building a catalog of "favorites" -- perhaps under 50 images to start, with a gradual couple of image build up about 200 images.

Would I expect to see any impact on editing performance (or anything else) from construction and use of this catalog?

I think you'll get different answers from different users based on their experiences with cataloging. Obviously, the more photos that a catalog contains the longer the cataloging process will run and impact overall system performance. Whether or not that impact is acceptable is an individual choice. Once the cataloging process has finished there is no more impact. I'd say give it a try and see how it goes for you.

If anyone thinks I have not tried any of the many excellent suggestions here and those I have read in other threads over the years then they are very much mistaken and I feel offended that they might think that. Perhaps they would prefer to pretend the problem does not exist - if you don’t see it on your own machine and pretend often enough then I suppose it just goes away. Anyway, I have stopped cataloguing altogether and reverted to Adobe Bridge which Is working smoothly. When I’m feeling masochistic I may try ON1 cataloguing again.

But for now I’m just going to go away. You win again, Brian.

Just a suggestion, but I've found many of these "crashing" and slow running problems can be cured by running the latest version of your graphics driver software.

Raymond, I apologize for having offended you. It was not my intent. I tried to not be personal in my comments by saying "people" and not referring to you personally. I have had people tell me, "No, I don't want to do that. Why should I?" after recommending they simply reinstall the program to get rid of an error message telling them that a piece of it could not be found. Anyhow, I'm sorry.

It also isn't about winning. I'm just trying to help.
