keyword list on ON1 Raw 2020.1
Why is it that Key Words keeps creating keywords that were deleted, several times, in previous versions. Why can't On1 solve this problem as it is an on going problem
-
There are a couple of problems with keywords that cause them to continually reappear after "fixing" them over and over again. I watched the other day as an image was being added to the catalog. The (nested) Keywords shown in the Metadata pane were exactly right for about 1 second and as I was watching I saw them get replaced by the non-hierarchical versions with the pipe characters appended to them.
All we can do is keep reporting the issue until it gets fixed.

Same observation. Some keywords that were part of a hierarchy are suddenly stand-alone but not linked to any photo. The can't be removed (because the corresponding photo has to be selected) nor deleted (ON1 doesn't find it). The only way to definitely remove it is by editing the Metadata. But since ON1 doesn't find the photo, one has to manually and visually scan each and every metadata entry. Tedious work with over 20'000 photos .... been there, done that in the past, but suddenly they are back again.

Another observation: None of the entries in the keyword list shows a count of photos containing the keyword.
When I double-click any of the keywords (i.e. show all the photos with this keyword), nothing happens; not a single photo is found; the grid remains empty.

The counts are displayed only for the current view. Since you currently have no images being viewed the counts are all zero. When you navigate to a folder containing images the counts will appear for that view.

Is there any progress towards resolution of this issue? I have 2020.6. When I had 2019.5 keyword management was so unpredictable, I gave up on managing keywords.
Recently I restarted the cleanup of my keywords as a covid-project. I find that there are certain keywords I cannot delete no matter what I do. Also some keywords that I did delete comeback after a day or so. I found a post from 2 years ago describing the exact some behaviours. Has anything changed?
Is there a back-door database or file of keywords that one can go into and properly edit?

Yes, this problem has been fixed. The reason the keywords keep returning is not due to a bug in the program. It happens when keywords have been embedded into image files making them permanent. Deleting a keyword in the program does remove it from the internal database and from the .on1 & .xmp sidecar files but it does not remove the embedded copy from the image file itself. You must do that yourself by using the Embed Metadata command.
There is a related problem in that the program cannot find the images containing that keyword if they are embedded only. You must locate them yourself. I've described the keyboarding issues from the past and have a procedure for cleaning up your Keyword List at Fixing Keyword Issues.

I had treated that issue extensively and reported it in several instances to Support and in this forum in the past already (ON1 2019/2020).
I had to remove embedded keywords of several hundred files, The problem is to locate these photos. The only way is to toggle through all suspected files one by one, to look at the metadata of each one in ON1 and to eventually correct the metadata manually. I haven't found a way to do that in a bulk treatment.
The caveat: If you happen to open the photo in Lightroom*) and to sync it with the LR catalogue, LR will embed (in the image file or in .XMP I don't know) any keyword you assign in a way that ON1 will not understand, because the notations for hierarchical keywords are incompatible between LR and ON.
*) I'm not talking about using the plug-in or the export function of LR, just using the RAW photo, completely independently)0 -
Thanks for you help.
After Brian's response I tried a little different approach.
My setup: I have the most recent images on my MBP's local drive. Everything older than a few years is on a WD Mycloud NAS. Both main folders are catalogued.
Yesterday I found that if I searched for a troublemaker keyword and selected "Search All Photos" instead of "Search Cataloged Folders", I got a whole new list of images. None of these were anywhere on any disk. If I selected one and clicked "Show in Folder" or "Show in Finder" I got no result - nothing happened.
So I selected all, and right-clicked "remove keyword". This may have been a fatal mistake. The trouble keywords are still there. Only now no amount of searching can turn up anything they are attached to.
I'm considered removing the NAS folder from the catalogue to at least narrow down the search and make stuff go faster.

Dirk, you have to follow the directions in my Fixing Keyword Issues post. If you select the top level Catalog then turn on the Show Sub-folder Contents option followed by a Select All you'll see those keywords you can't find the images for will light up showing that you have selected files using that keyword. I do not know why the program refuses to find them when you double-click the keyword. Anyhow, the article explains how to walk through the sub-folders quickly to identify which folder contains the file(s) you're looking for. Now you can walk through that folder's images to find the one with the unwanted keyword. Remove it from the image and immediately use the Embed Metadata command to permanently remove that keyword from the image file so it is no longer embedded.
Bernd, I seem to remember a Preference setting in Lightroom to have the program automatically embed keywords. It's been several years since I've run Lightroom so my memory might be faulty but it's worth taking a look.

There was a 2nd update released late yesterday. The new version is 15.1.0.10100. It has fixed some outstanding issues with keywords like not being able to find photos when the keyword is double-clicked in the keyword list. There was another problem where some photos would not accept the Embed Metadata command so changes could not be re-embedded. That has also been fixed in all cases I've tested so far.

Thanks for this Brian Lawson
"I seem to remember a Preference setting in Lightroom to have the program automatically embed keywords."
I have just looked it up but didn't find such an option. Anyhow, I use LR very rarely, mostly to convert old scanned B & W Tiffs (no color profile) to DNG or JPG.
I just avoid sync'ing the catalog altogether to prevent LR do to its thing.0 -
Thanks for checking Bernd.
