Export with transparent background
Is it possible to export an image with the masked out areas, for example sky or background, as transparent PNG file?

Yes but you must mask the image Layer itself to create the transparent area.

Can you explain the steps to mask the image layer?
I have a .PNG of a flock of seagulls, black over transparent I wanted to add in On1. When I imported them into my Extras as Backgrounds they transcoded to .jpg and lost their transparency. I could not find an clean way to separate the black birds from the white background.

All you have to do is click in the Show/Hide Mask icon, the square that shows the mask, then paint it just like you would any other mask. Layers have one just like the Effects filters or a Local Adjustment.

Stuart, you can add a png layer without importing as an extra. Just click on the plus sign to add a layer then make sure you are in folders and select browse then browse to the folder the png is located and select it. See 1st image.
You may need need to play with the blend mode in the second image I set the blend mode for the png layer to multiply.
Saves a lot of masking.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I was hoping to avoid Photoshop where I popped it in as a transparent layer. But using the blend mode in On1 got me to a similar place.
Added the seagulls in this photo:
