Adding my own textures to the On1 library
I wanted to add my own textures to the ones already in On1. I used the manage extras option under File added a folder and imported my texture files. The thumbnails are all black when I view the imports in the manage extras. I can see my texture file has been added to the textures list in add a filter but the files are still showing black and do not alter the main image. The texture file does not show in the Preset or filter list on the left-hand side of the screen in develop module. My files I am trying to add are RAW files.
Any guidance is appreciated.

Colin I just deleted my previous comment because I see the paragraph I copied in says you can use a raw file. I'll have to test on my system. I've never tried using a raw file as a texture.

I'm testing this as I write this and I'm seeing what Colin is reporting. When you create your own Textures they do not have a preview by default. However, you should be able to apply that texture, set its Mode to Replace & its Opacity to 100%, then save that as a Preset to see it. I'm not able to get that to work either though. We may need to ask support about this.
I'm not sure why one would want to use an unprocessed RAW file as a filter though. If you have processed the image, export it to a jpeg then import that to create your Texture.

I tested as well and see the same thing. Even though the original paragraph in the user guide doe include raw files as a potential file type everywhere else it leaves raw out for potential texture files. For example from page 121. I think the 1st paragraph I copied in is an error in the user guide.
You can also import your own textures directly
into the Borders filter pane, or via the Extras Manager (available in
Browse). Texture files can be almost any image format (JPEG, TIFF,
Raw or Photoshop).BTW this paragraph seems to be in error also since it mentions the Borders filter pane. You will see elsewhere in the guide that borders must be .PNG because a border has large transparent areas.
I also agree with Brian, I can't imagine wanting to use a raw file as a texture. The texture file are also huge so adding that as a filter would seem to me to really bog the system down.

Brian, I have to disagree with your comment "When you create your own Textures they do not have a preview by default. " I just added a JPG as a texture and I can see it fine. I don't think you need to add it as a preset.

My comments were based on Matt Kloskowski's course on Texture Blending.

Brian do you have a link to that course I can't seem to find it.
I don't disagree you could make a preset with a texture. My point was if you import a JPG or other file as a texture you do not have to make a preset to have a preview of the file visible in the textures menu. I import textures all the time and see previews of them fine in the textures menu and when adding them as a layer without making a preset.
Perhaps we are talking about different thing but - You said texture files do not have a preview by default. I know the OP mentioned Preset in his original comment but he was also discussing the texture list. So my point he should be able to see a file in the texture list without generating a preset.

It's a course he sells through his web site. https://mattk.com/course-list/ I thought it was worth the $40, the bundle package is probably a better deal if it is something you're going to do a lot of.

I see -- thanks! I'll check tt out.

Thank you Brian and David for taking the time to comment. This was the first time I was putting my own textures in, I did wonder if they should be something other than RAW as it did take a while for them to transfer, You have provided me with things to try which I very much appreciate.

I tried with a JPEG and I can now see a thumbnail so that's all good and used on a photo and works like the On1 ones. I exported the RAW to jpeg at 50%. So that has been very helpful thank you again.

If you import a RAW file, it gets converted to a JPG automatically.
I just checked this to make sure. From my RAW, it created a 9.8mb jpg and in a folder called 'Small' it created a 172kb file which I guess would be the thumbnail.
This is my path to these files in a folder called TEST. Your path would likely be on your C: drive in your USER area.
D:\Roaming\ON1\Extras 2020\Textures\Test\Small

Did you do the import through the Extras Manager or did you import the RAW file into an already applied Texture?

Rick, have you opened the thumbnail. Like the OP indicates when import raw as a texture it it seems to import fine but it is just a black file. Can add it as a texture or layer fine but again just flat black.
For me Win 10 , raw file is CR2.

I first imported with the Extras manager. Later in Effects, I opened the Texture in a Filter and made a preset for it. I'll try it again by importing through the texture filter to see if it works differently

Ok, I imported another RAW through the Texture Filter. It converted to JGP as well. Making a preset for it works fine too.
This is what's in the Test folder I made. 2 JPG's from imported RAWs and a folder with 2 smaller thumbnails.

Rick when I import a raw file as a texture through the filter or through the extras manager ( which pops up when you impport through the filter import button ) I just get a blank black image. The "Dave Wall Texture" is the resulting image of a raw imported as a texture on my system. Are you a Mac user? Wondering if that's the difference. I'm on Win 10 and Canon CR2 raw.

I use Win 10. What does the larger version look like? Are they both black?
What if you open it in a photo viewer like Irfan, does it work then?
0 -
Yes the larger one is black too.
For me it's not a big deal since I would not use a raw file as a texture but thought I would test it out. Seems like Colin, Bryan and myself all see the issue but you don't.
Even though I don't care that a raw file doesn't work as a texture on my machine I guess I can turn in a support ticket on it and see what they say. ;-)

Should have added I have tried adjusting exposure white & black levels etc. with no impact just a pure black file.

I'm on a Mac. I'm in the middle of tracking down a different problem (don't try to rip a DVD while running ON1) so I can't look into it right now. I've also completely removed everything on1 from my system and reinstalled from a fresh start. I'll see if that makes any difference once I can run the program again.

David, since you know those files are JPG, as a workaround, you should be able to convert your files yourself and just add them to the folder.
So the problem seems to be in converting them. That's something you might experiment with.
I have to go out, will check back later.

I tried a dng this time and got the same results — a black rectangle. I have to assume the program is not rendering the jpegs correctly.

Hi Rick, thanks I totally understand that -- I was just testing to see if I saw what Colin ( the OP ) was seeing. I have nor ever have had any intention of using a raw file as a texture since I would want to have the file / texture looking a specific way. :-)

Brian I just tried a Tiff file and it worked fine.

Brian , Sorry to keep dragging this out but I tried a DNG same result as you black rectangle.
So for me
JPG, .Tif and .Psd import as a textureOK
raw and .DNG import as black rectangle

I wonder if it has anything to do with my cam being tier 2 which doesn't use On1s RAW engine.
EDIT: Ah HA! I just imported a DNG that someone sent me which does use On1s RAW engine and it's JUST BLACK!!!

Brian, it was added via the manage extras option.
Wow, I seem to have opened up a bit of a debate, that was not my intention at all. Just for information, I am on Windows 10 and this was my first try at importing my own textures running On1 2020.1

Hi Colin, no worries man, no debate. We're just trying to figure out what's going on I'm guessing one of us will agree to report this to On1.

David,
I used to work in software testing, so I have an appreciation of trying to understand the problem before getting in contact with the developers.

Rick, looks like you've found the key. I will report this to the engineers.
