Radeon/Nvidia suggestions for high performance (again)
I have been an ON1 user since at least version 10. My workflow involves shooting 36Mp RAW files with an infrared converted camera. Because of white point issues, I often have to do the White Balance in Nikon's software then export them out as 16 bit tif files, creating 260mb files.
Editing these files back in Photo Raw 2020 will sometimes require adding 5-6 filters in Effects. When zooming in to use a masking brush or panning around, the system slows to an unusable crawl....sometimes having me wait 10-20 seconds after panning. The lag is terrible.
I have followed support's suggestions for updated drivers, driver settings, ON1 preferences settings, Windows settings...I have been living like this for too long..I have no issues with other editing programs.
System: i7 4790K @ 4.0 Ghz, 32Gb RAM, Nvidia GTX 970 with 4Gb VRAM, ssd for boot and programs, separate ssd for scratch and cache, HDD for photo storage, 2 27inch monitors running at 2560x1440 (QHD), Windows 10 64 bit.
Sometimes when working with just the 36mp raw files I get the same lagging effects. The last resort is to disable some of the filters that I am not working with when zooming/panning/masking.
Support says that going with a 6 or 8GB card will help. I am willing to replace the 970 card, but want to be sure that what I purchase will resolve my issues. Is my issue brought by the combination of large files and the 2k monitors? I have been looking at the Nvidia 6Gb 2060 card as well as the Radeon 5700 cards. Do I need the 8Gb of the 5700? I have heard of nightmare stories of the AMD drivers not working (crashing). What about the older 580 cards? I don't feel like I should have to go all the way up to the 2070 or 2080 cards. What is working for you? Suggestions?

My system is similar to yours and I updated to a GTX 2060 recently (for gaming purposes and bc there was a reduction) and On1 is running just fine. No experience with AMD though
/Edit: I have just one 4k 27" monitor running

I have a Radeon 5700 and it works great. I don't know where you heard nightmare stories about the 5700 and crashing, but there are many possible explanations for the stories that could have nothing to do with the card itself or even the radeon drivers.
I really like that my 5700 is a blower style card and blows the heat out of my case. It makes less noise than my previous RX480 non blower style card and my PC runs cooler overall because it blows most the heat out of the case. I also seen a nice performance gain in PR with the 5700.
In my opinion your odds of being disappointed or satisfied with an AMD card or Nvidia card are equal. If the AMD cards were as bad as the nightmare stories, then the 5700 cards would not sell so well. Maybe they are Nvidia fans and have nothing good to say about AMD.0 -
Thank you both for taking the time to comment and share your experiences. Its great to hear from people who have real world experience with the GPUs and PR. Either way I go it doesn't feel so much like a leap of faith!
