How to move images from one folder to another with the edits/changes already made (sidecar files)

It sounds like you used the Finder to copy the folder from one drive to the other? That should work, I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. What happens if you use ON1's Browser to copy the folder to the new drive? That would be the preferred method.

Navigate to the parent folder for the folder you want to move so you can see that folder in the Browser. Go to the Browser tab in the left side panel but do not click on any names there. Be sure you only click the arrows to expand the structure until you can see the location you want to copy the folder to. Now you can drag it from the Browser window to that folder in the side panel.

Do the edits come along that way?

I am sure the experts will chime in soon, but I believe this is a known bug. I have experienced something similar, albeit not when moving folders between drives. On1 support tell me they have been unable to duplicate the issue, whilst saying that "various" bugs will be dealt with in the release due out in a few days. It's incredibly annoying, but there is a work-round. Move the photos and their sidecars to a new folder and the connection between them should re-establish.  Then move them back again. Unfortunately, I find that, whilst this works, a few days later the connection is lost again.

By the way, my photos are normally on an external SSD, but this very morning I copied a folder to my desktop in order to restore the edits. It certainly worked for me in that direction. However, I am constantly having to "Restore Previews" since the +/- icon at the bottom right of each photo keeps disappearing. I am about to start a new thread on this issue.

Others have suggested reverting to an earlier version of Photo Raw. If the upcoming version doesn't resolve these issues, I shall be asking for my money back and switching to Luminar 4.

    Thank you Brian,

I did use both the Finder & On1 browser to copy the files. Also tried to import the folder from the On1 browser. All of these options did not work.

However, I did what you have suggested as the prefered method (second para) and it worked!! Yeah!! Finally, I should have asked this earlier instead of suffering in silence.

    Thank you very much.

Try that our Ray, I hope it works for you. I will try again the next few days to make sure it is working. As I did encounter something similar to yours before.

Nicole, At the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon, keep your eye one the edits on your external ssd drive.  Mine all became disconnected after a couple weeks.  I wouldn’t trust it for extensive keeper edits. Make copies and tiff files for your internal drive. Hope for help with the next release.  Jerry

You are both right Jerry and Ray, I have just checked and all the edits are no longer there...

Brian, this is no good... very sad...

I also have not mentioned that edits that are made in one version of ON1 Raw do not show on a different year version of ON1 Raw.

For example, images edited in ON1 Raw 2018, the edits do not show in On1 Raw 2019 or 2020 or even 2017.

I would not necessarily expect edits made in a newer version of the program to be visible in an older version. Often times there are changes made to how specific filters work and those changes may not be backwards compatible.

I agree it sucks to loose edits. I'm dealing with it myself. All we can do is continue to report this to support until it gets fixed.

I agree with you Brian, possibly asking for too much to have edits made in newer version to work in an older version. But edits made in older versions should be able to appear in the newer version, shouldn't it?

How do I report to the support to get it fixed? Will they look here or do I need to send it to them somewhere else?

    Thank you.

Yes, older edits should still be there in the newer versions of the program.

While ON1 does monitor these forums, they rarely respond here directly. The way to get ahold of them is with the Submit a request link at the bottom of the page. Be sure to include the information requested in this article: https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018405111-How-to-submit-a-problem-to-ON1-Tech-Support-A-Step-by-step-Guide

If you want to send them any files they will have to be zipped together along with their sidecar files then the zip file uploaded to a web sharing service such as Dropbox or WeTransfer. Include the download link in your support request.

I don’t use a catalog any more thinking that it made the .raw and .on1 file pair storage device and computer independent. Clearly they are not. I infer from all this that there is some cache of info on the computer that is guiding ON1 and getting corrupted at random times.

if this is the design of ON1 does it mean I can’t move/copy a .raw/.on1 file pair successfully to a new computer like I can with a Lightroom edit with sidecar? Or .psd?  Shouldn’t I be able to send Nichole and Ray a raw/.on1 file pair and have the pair work with their copy of 2020?

Or is the plan going forward that we must all use 360 to gain that mobility?  The lack of communication and guidance from ON1 on this is concerning, much more the absence of acknowledgment of the problem and a commitment for a fix.  We have to read second hand support tea leaves and hope.    Same with catalog backup.

I fear it will be up to us to test 20.5 and seek understanding of how it works or not.  I am so much deeper into the software than I ever expected, or wanted.

Yes, you should be able to send a raw file with its .on1 & .xmp sidecar files to another computer or person and have all the edits come along with it. That is what they are designed for.

No, the 360º service does not replace that feature. It supplements it making it easier for one user to edit their images on multiple devices (think primarily tablet/mobile phone to computer) without having to physically copy the files from one system to the other. A system like that is prone to errors. Which one has the most recent edits? Did I just copy the wrong way? The 360º service handles the syncing for you.
