Edits not seen by Develop for External SSD

Well that's interesting (dare I be encouraged?)

I dragged the file with Browse to my Desktop.  It didn't show up right away so I thought I had screwed up and went back to the external SSD and low and behold the edits were there, but only for this file.  They then showed up on the desktop as well.  So some magic took place.

Would like to understand it and the implications for recovering my other files.  Asked support if there was a batch process I could use to initialize the files.

Please pass this along to support. You know the drill by now. :)

I do know the drill.  Already done.  Have been spending my days recently learning Bridge, Adobe Raw and Photo Shop.  PITA.  Much prefer ON1 for photography and a facile workflow.  But Adobe will do the trick if I can't get the DAM On1 Browse to be trustworthy.  Praying for a miracle with 2020.5.  (But kinda hard to imagine how a more complex 360 DAM is going to clean things up.)

I am not sure I fully understand you. Are you saying that you lost your edits on photos held on your eternal SSD, whilst this on the internal drive are OK? Is this happening to every photo inx the folder?

I had the same or similar issue. The work-round seemed to be to move all the photos and their sidecars in each folder on the SSD to a new folder. I have been working with photos from a year or two back on my internal drive for the past few days and so far have not had this issue. Instead, what's happening is that the +/- icons disappear randomly and I have to hit Refresh Preview to restore them. I raised a thread on this and have reported to Support, with no response yet.

As a matter of interest I have just plugged in my external SSD and take a look at all my (edited) photos from 2019, contained in various folders and sub-folders. Once again, every single edit has become "detached" and I will be moving the lot to the internal drive in hopes of restoring them.

This only started happening with the last update. All Support are saying is that "various" bugs will be dealt with in 14.5. We are almost at the end of the month and it hasn't been released yet as promised. On1 seem more concerned about pushing On1 360 at present, judging by the videos being released to YouTube.

The engineers have found a bug that causes the "detachment" on external SSDs. They have a fix for that coming in the .5 update.

    I certainly hope so!

    Hi Ray,

I have followed your posts with interest as my problems are similar.

In my most recent case I have the same files on 3 drives.  Google folder on my internal drive, external ssd, and backup on external spinning drive. The .on1 files with same edit script are present on each. The “badge” does not show on the ssd nor will Develop recognize edit history.

This was a sudden change in the last few days.  Prior to this edit history and develop were fine on the ssd for those files.

Repeatable bugs are one thing, transient, random ones are so much worse for user and developer.

Hope they have found the bug but it will take me a long time before I trust it again because of its transient nature.  Thus I am now learning Bridge and Photoshop, daunting tho that is.

ps.  If the “disconnected” files that are still on my ext. ssd become “connected” in the 20.5 release I will be encouraged.

I am transiting the other way and my LR subscription gets cancelled next week!

Did the move work-round not work for you? I just moved my "lost" 2019 folder from the external to internal drive and the edits have been restored!

    Ray,

I already lost all my edits a couple months ago.  The ON1 files existed but had no edit script imbedded  so moving did no good as data was gone.

Since then I dropped use of catalog and have just monitored test files.  That is when I saw after a couple weeks that edits on ext ssd became disconnected.  I am not interested in a merry go round fix (:  I need a Browse that is trustworthy on my external ssd.  I would much prefer to stay with ON1 but my photography has been at a near standstill while chasing this DAM issue.  It is fundamental. But I hope!  Meantime I am building a basic skill in Photoshop and Bridge (not Lightroom)

    Hi all,

I'm seeing the same issue (again).  This all started when I upgraded to 2020.1

i've been exporting each edited image as a jpg immediately after finishing the edit so at least I've got a copy of the image looking the way I wanted it.

This issue and the random failure of the retouch tools is making me consider a switch to something else.

Are you reporting this to support as they have requested?

  • Paul Hutchins

Yep,  I've reported the loss of edits and retouch tool issues on each occasion they've occurred.

Cool, thanks. All we can do now is wait to see what happens with 2020.5.

I reported the issues I have been having with regard to the +/- icon disappearing. This was a week ago and I have heard nothing back. The month of June is almost over and who knows if the promised update will appear in the next 36 hours?

Do you want fast or right ;)

It’s coming and if it takes a couple more days to get this properly repaired it’s worth the wait.

Can anyone verify that 2020.5 fixes the loss of edits when using external drives?

All I know is I was told there were bugs that had been found and fixed. I don't know if that means all of them.

I am downloading the new version now!

Fingers crossed the new version works - doubt it'll recover the lost edits though.

Hopefully we won't have to re-catalogue folders

20.5 cannot connect to on.1 file created by previous version on external ssd.  As seen below file P1067386.on1 has full script. It was handled by Develop a while back and then became disconnected. I have left it alone since.  Still no badge or recovery of edits by Develop.

If 20.5 was able to read it my confidence would have gone up a bunch.

Lacking any documentation claiming otherwise I have to assume the external SSD bug is not fixed.

I will ask support if this is a reasonable test or expectation that my disconnected files should come back to life.

Will it read them if you move the image & its sidecars to the internal drive?

It's good to hear that they can be recovered at least.

The problem isn't just for ssd drives, loses edits on the standard external drive as well.  Haven't tried moving to internal drive yet

The issue has not been resolved. I opened a folder that is on my external SSD and the first photo in browse view was not showing the edits (it is always the first one and often others too). As before, I moved the raw and sidecar to my desktop and the link was re-established.

Ray, the problem that caused the loss in the first place and the ability to recover from it are 2 separate things. It is entirely possible that the whatever cause the disconnect in the first place has been found and fixed. Because the disconnect already exists for some images, those must be recovered if they still exist.

It is also possible that the connection can be reestablished by moving affected images into a subfolder on the external drive. Something that forces the program to establish a new link in its database.

    Ray,

So I understand, you didn't move from ssd to internal and then back to ssd?  Just moving to internal fixed the connection?  If so that seems odd.  How does ON1 react that way to a one way trip rather than a round trip?

    Brian,

I am so surprised at the lack of specific communication from ON1 on this bug and  fixes and repairs if any.  We are left to speculate.  I need something more than that.

Jerry: I thought you knew about the work-round!

Let me go through my experience again. Until about a month ago, I was editing photos that were kept on an external SSD, with another SSD used as a scratch disc. This was because I was using an older MacBook Pro (not that old, 2017), with little internal drive space and a slow processor. After the penultimate upgrade, I kept losing my edits, due to some sort of disconnect between the raw file and its sidecar. The work-round was to move everything in the folder concerned to a new folder, on the external SSD was fine, and the edits were restored. If I wanted to, I could then move them back again to the original folder, without issue. However, the problem recurred periodically and I had to keep repeating the process over and again.

Since few of my photos that I ported over from Lightroom did so successfully, I have been spending much of my time in lockdown re-re-editing them in On1. I started shooting raw in 2016, so photos prior to that I just did some quick edits in Luminar 4.

I have now bought a high end MacBook Pro with a faster processor and GPU. It also has more internal drive space, so I moved all my 2016-2019 folders to it. Once on the internal drive, I have not experienced the detached sidecar issue. Instead the +/- badge disappears intermittently and randomly, and I have to hit Refresh Preview to get it back again to see which photos have been edited or not.

The few photos I have taken so far this year remain on the external SSD. I am mainly a travel photographer, so circumstances have not been conducive to that! Today, after installing 14.5, I decided to take a look at them. At least one (interestingly it always includes the first in the list) had lost its edit. So that's why I am saying the issue has not been resolved. But moving that particular photo and its sidecar did the trick.

You don't have to move them one by one. Just drag the lot to a new folder and see what happens. Good luck.

    Brian,

You said “....Something that forces the program to establish a new link in its database.”

Curious, what “database” are you thinking of?  I am not using a “catalog” and thought in that case that the raw, ON1 file pair were independent of ON1 specific internal record keeping.

I ask because I want to understand the ON1 internal design in this regard so I can assess its future reliability,  and potential pitfalls In file management.

BTW, thanks for hanging in there on this issue ,“Scotty”

The program maintains a database of the edits along with storing them in the optional sidecar files. Without the sidecars the edits would be lost.

Somehow the program can loose its connection between the database and the sidecars or get out of sync with them. That's when the program says no edits but the sidecars still show them. By moving the files a new connection is made between the database entries and the actual file and the sidecars get read again which returns the edits. At least that's what I think is happening. That database is somewhere in your ~/Libraries/Application Support/ON1/ folder.
