ON1 2020.5 not treating JPG & RAW as single photo
I've just updated to ON1 2020.5 and I notice that it no longer treats my JPGs and RAW files as a single photo despite having the tick box checked in preferences.
The previous version was fine.
Any body else have this problem before I report it as a bug?

Check under Edit - Preferences - General and make sure that option is checked. The update might have undone that on you.

... sorry.... under Edit - Preferences - Files.

Its ticked. I did check.
I've even tried un-ticking it, closing the app.
Restarting the app and ticking it again, but still doesn't work.1 -
I seem to have the same issue. Right now, I've only got a few cataloged folders as I'm testing the system out as a standalone vs plugin from Adobe that I've always used. However, my raw+jpg pairs are not pairing.

This is working properly for me. Try resetting your preferences. Quit the program then restart it pressing the Shift key while it launches. You'll be given a dialog with options for resetting your personal settings or the entire program's settings. I'd start with my personal settings.

I was having the same issue after updating to 2020.5, and following Brian's instructions for deleting my personal settings fixed the problem for me when viewing "Cataloged Folders". However, when I browse "Dates" I sill see both JPG and RAW file thumbnails for each image. Following the steps to reset the entire program's settings also failed to help.

There is a setting in Preferences > ON1 360 for how to handle RAW/JPG pairs. How it yours set?

I'm using ON1 Photo RAW 2020.5 (on Windows so my Preferences page looks a little different) but I don't have an "ON1 360" tab.

Is it possible that you have multiple versions of the program installed on your computer and that screen came from an earlier version?
0 -
No, the version number shows "ON1 Photo RAW 2020.5 (14.5.0.9199)" when viewed in same instance of the program where my earlier screenshot came from.

Are you a 360º subscriber? If not you might not see that tab in Preferences. I showed you the wrong one since I've been dealing with so many of its issues today, sorry. :)
It looks like the Search Results window is ignoring that preference setting in the Files tab. I don't know if that is a bug or by design. You'd have to ask support.

I'm not a 360 subscriber, so that's probably why my preferences look different.
Thanks for taking the time to help, Brian. I've gone ahead and submitted a support request for this issue.

I'm having the same issue and resetting did not fix it. I think it should be reported as a bug.

Lee, which issue? JPGs and RAW being shown separately at all times or just when using a search? When I have the option to treat them as a single photo turned on I only see both in Search Results. I don't know if that is a bug or by design. You'll have to ask tech support about it.

I am also having this issue. Not Happy.
I tried to do preference re-set, but holding down the space bar during application start-up did not give me that window. I'm an Apple user if that makes a difference.
I am not a 360 client, nor do I intend to become one.
Disappointed that the move to integrate this new service has resulted in bugs for non-subscribers.

.Not space bar, use the shift key

Just heard from Tech Support, It's a known bug and they are working on it.

Hello,
This issue was identified months ago and I had the same problem. An update from 2020 to 2020.5 caused the issue. I went back to using On1 2019 for the last couple of months. This week I reinstalled 2020.5 hoping it was fixed. I updated to a more recent version, still have the same issue.
When should this be fixed? We paid for an application that no longer works like it was, did or should. Should we move on to some other application now?
Please help. thanks.
Paul

If this was not fixed in the recent 2020.6 update then it is unlikely to get fixed for the 2020 version of the program. 2020.6 is most likely the last update we'll see.
1 -
I had also hoped that the recent update to 2020.6 would resolve the issue. No such luck. I've heard that there will not be another update to 2020. <SAD>. The issue seems to be with folders that contain more than 1000 images. If you redo your filing system so that no folder contains more than say 950 images, then the software will work as expected. Sorry that the programmers were not able to fix this with the recent update. I will NOT be purchasing any new versions. Releasing an update that breaks functionality in my existing product and expecting me to pay for the fix, is a poor business plan.

So, my take away is this: as this was a known issue, someone made the decision that this bug was not worth devoting the resources to patch in the 2020.6 release. If there is an underlying issue in the code, say perhaps a need to limit processing resources by restricting folder size, then that reason should be made public. I would appreciate more transparency. The response of " Yeah, you're experiencing a problem that we already know about, maybe we'll fix it, maybe we won't?" Is not encouraging.

What most people forget when their favorite unfixed bug remains unfixed is that ON1 is a small company with limited resources. I imagine that right now most of those resources are devoted to getting the program running natively on the new Apple Silicon systems.

Thanks Brian for the comments. Appreciated.
But that is also suggesting that I should have stuck with the big guys and products that work instead of committing to On1. If On1 doesn't have the resources to fix the bug on an old version (which is only a few months old), fine, ok. They should at least provide us with a free upgrade to a version that works. We purchased and paid for software that was working fine. That was the agreement, the contract, the deal. Then we got an update that ruined it. That was not part of our deal for buying the software.
So we should turf this and go a different route now? I am simply looking for a solution to a problem that didn't exit 6 months ago. Thanks.

I feel the same way. While I guess I'm glad our bug reports helped the users of 2021, I chose to give ON1 a chance over the big name players because I like the idea that I can own a software license outright, and that major upgrades are optional and under my control. Sadly, it feels like the bulk of all the company's development effort is being directed into making ON1's business model look more and more like the chasing of new features and pushing the cloud model that I wanted to leave behind.
Sure, alright, it's a small dev team with limited resources, but if the killer app I'm here for---software that just works, and doesn't stop working even if I don't buy it again every year---is going to be abandoned, then I don't know what else to say. It's disappointing.

Well stated, pvolpe & Sean. I hope that Brian Lawson's role as a community moderator is a two-way street and that there is someone listening to his reports of the current mood amongst the users. I also hope that he is properly compensated for his efforts.

I hesitated before responding to this thread.
I've been a software developer for over 30 years (until recently when I decided the time had come to do something else). I can't speak for developers at On1 but I hated having bugs reported and always strove to fix them as soon as possible - sometimes against management's wishes who wanted my focus elsewhere. I've rarely came across a developer who didn't care about bugs; yes I seen developers dismiss bugs as intentional features or rant and rave about not having the time to look at them but most do when they've had time to think about it. I've also worked at companies where what you bought was tied to the version of Unix or Windows in the full knowledge that when Sun/DEC/IBM/HP/MS etc brought out a new operating system the company who bought the software would have to pay again to get support; it was partly this that kept the income coming in. Photo editing software has often used a similar model but tied to the camera support i.e., if you want support for the latest cameras you have to pay and upgrade.
On1 push the message that you pay for the software once and it is yours forever probably because they know people don't like the newer Adobe model where you rent the software. I view software differently, like any other thing I buy. It should be fit for purpose and last a reasonable time. So defects in software are just like defects in anything else; they should be rectified if the software has not lasted a reasonable time. I don't class less than a year a reasonable time. Even MS have realised this and publish an end of service date for a version of Windows years in advance.
I don't know anything about On1's resources or size of development team but it is definitely not an excuse to not fix bugs. On1 can make whatever decisions they like because there are no laws I am aware of with regard to software's longevity or fitness for purpose. However, software I paid good money for earlier this year has seen newer versions that broke things which previously worked and introduced new bugs and On1 are reportedly saying (I've not seen it officially said) that there will be no further fixes/updates to PR 2020. This effectively means if you want fixes you have to pay each year AND run the risk of new bugs in previously working functionality. I don't really see how this differs substantially from the "renting the software"; you pay every year.
Open source software works differently but also has its problems (and benefits). The developers generally have a pride in their code which goes beyond what they get paid to do (they aren't getting paid usually and are not /controlled/ by management who are mostly interested in profit). In general, fixes are produced much more quickly; I have produced fixes in open surce software within hours of a bug being reported in some cases. However, bug fixes and especially new features are at the whim of the developers and in particular any itch they want to scratch i.e., what interests them sometimes.
Software is everywhere these days. In our cars, TV, phones, DVD players, security systems, watches etc. Personally, I think the time has come for the normal fitness for purpose and last a reasonable time (the SADFART rule if you know who Martin Lewis is) rule to apply to software as well. If On1 doesn't have the resources to do this then they would fade away and that might not be a bad thing.
Having said that PR is a reasonable (in terms of my current expectations) bit of software. I am not going to pay to upgrade to 2021 (in 2020) because (a) all I hear on these forums is complaints about it (b) it doesn't give me anything new I want and (c) bugs I've reported or others have reported have not been addressed (d) support responses I've seen on these forums don't seem to be that helpful.
On1 might be able to make money and continue but don't forget your paying users. They can be fickle and desert you very quickly. AND, please, please try and be more communicative i.e.
- list all bug fixes - a note saying "bug fixes" is not good enough - as a user I want to know what is fixed
- address your QA as it doesn't look so good. Show the bug reports publicly as in open source - honestly, it will not hurt you like you might think. Yes, there will be some spurious ones but if you can show they were addressed people will get a lot of confidence from it and feel you are on top of things.
- Don't hide your failures when you can address them and show you've done the right thing; users understand software is complex and will stay with you if you are honest and react.
Also:
- it looks like you are using QT. Great bit of software but huge and very complex. If you aren't already, give your developers time to push fixes back to it. You can even make a positive of it by saying you are contributing to software you rely on.
- Don't try and tie people in to your software by adding propriety features that won't work with other software. You might think you'll lose customers and you might lose a few but the more your software works with other software the more useful it is. e.g., I use digikam for metadata because your metadata changes don't work across other software.
- Stop thinking the only way to attract new customers is by adding features. Features which work well and consistently will get you a better reputation.
- Reconsider your apparent decision to only allow plus members to trial new versions. You are not doing people a favour by letting them see a new version, /they/ are doing you a favour by testing it and potentially avoiding embarressment to you when something doesn't work.
Didn't intend this to be a rant. Just my view.
Martin
