Saving Filters

The list of filters shown when you click the Add Filter button cannot be changed or limited to just those you like.

The Heart icon the manual talks about shows up when viewing the Presets column while editing.

Brian, don't you have a Favorites folder at the top of the list? That's where the favourite (Heart) presets are collected.

Just looking at that now, I see that the hearts are no longer accessible. The presets in my favourites were selected in a previous On1 version. Another 2020.5 bug?

I am seeing it now but I did not when I posted above. Must have been half-asleep I guess. Sorry.

But wait a moment, I don't want Presets I want Filters. Do Favourites work for Filters as well? Another problem is that the Filters column doesn't show for me, I get Presets only - until I click on Effects on the right hand Develop column. On the left hand column I can then see all the Filters but no thumbnail pics when hovering. Ditto on the right hand column where I would normally be working. I do get a thumbnail there with a short description but no ability to add to Favourites.

As an aside, having the Favourites, should it ever appear, on the left is a bit dumb. All of the adjustments, in my neophyte way, are done under Develop and Effects. Despite its shortcomings Lightroom 6 is better organized and you don't have to wander the cursor all over the screen. The same problem with Crop in ON1, away over on the left. I slightly crop every image, with birds I seldom get it right! Why isn't Crop over with the Develop controls? It would also be great to have a Done button to click when finished with a Filter. Making the transition from L6 is not made easier by these various weirdness's. But we will get there eventually. Oh, has anyone noticed that the latest ON1 has slowed down, not helped by the problems with the latest Windows 10 release causing lots of display problems?

    Thanks for your help

    Donald

Create a Preset for the Filters you want to show as Favorites then tag them with the Heart icon. The Preset I showed above is just a Dynamic Contrast filter with all the sliders set to 100 to highlight spots that need to be removed.

The Crop Tool is on the left because it is a Tool, not an effect or filter. It lives in the Tool Bar along with the rest of the Tools like the Brushes.

There isn't any need for a Done button on a Filter. Once you have it set the way you like you are done with it and all you need to do is move to the next thing you want to do with the image.

I'm on a Mac so the comparison isn't exact but I've noticed an improvement in performance with the 2020.5 release.

Yes Brian, I agree it is a Tool my comment was about ergonomics - all the things you use most frequently should be grouped and not all over the place.

Anyway, I still don't have Hearts or Favourites. BNut I will keep looking to see if I can get the Filters I use to show up automatically.

    Thanks

Donald, you don't actually need favourites. Since you need to make presets for your filters anyway, just group them in your own folder as I did in the above screenshot "Ricks presets"

You can make something like "Donalds Filters".

I have the ~ in the title to keep that folder on the top of the list.

You can avoid having to move the pointer from one side of the screen to the other to use the Crop Tool by simply pressing C. No mouse movement needed. Hotkeys are wonderful things. :)

Thanks guys for comments. I will gradually learn the keyboard shortcuts. I've learned Cntrl Z  thus far. It is very handy at the moment!

I tried setting up the preset to include the Filters I want but it doesn't work. ON1 rejected Donald's Filters! We seem to be running different ON1s, I assume that you are on Macs. It is a pity that the manual doesn't mention anything like this. It isn't a deal breaker and I'm sure that ON1 will get around to improving things on the subsequent updates. Also, the Filters have settings rather than do nothing initially. I would like to have the filter available and not have to adjust it from the settings chosen by ON1. It tries to do too much and usually fails.

I shall go now and print off the keyboard shortcuts, this will be a start. It does seem like a simple thing to have all the Filters listed in a column when you hit Effects, then you could choose which ones you want to display. Perhaps I'm old fashioned or maybe brainwashed by Adobe for too long.

    Thanks

    Donald

I'm on Windows and Presets work just fine. Perhaps if you tell us what you're trying to do (step by step) we can tell you what's wrong.

To help you save time and create the looks that you love best, ON1 Photo RAW 2020 also includes a robust preset system that lets you save settings made in any of the editing tabs—including local adjustments and masks—for applying to other photos. Editing presets can be applied in the Edit module, and in Browse, and,
like all other elements of Photo RAW 2020, are re-editable. (Presets are discussed in detail on page 89.)

    Page 89...

Once you have a group of edited settings that you wish to save, go to the Settings menu and select Save Preset. The Save Preset dialog will appear, with options for which module’s settings you wish to save, naming the preset, and adding it to an existing or new category. Nearly all of the Edit module settings can be saved as a preset, including cropping, retouching, text blocks and masks.

A list of Hot keys is on the last page.

Don't forget Control-Shift-Z to undo the undo. I use it to quickly remove & reapply the last edit as an easy way to compare the overall results.

I am a Mac guy but I do run in it in a VM from time to time. Rick runs Windows.

Where did you use the name "Donald's Filters"? I was able to create a category with that name.

When you first apply an Effect it has no settings. Create your filter right then before actually making any adjustments. You'll want to do this for each of your favorite filters. Pick an image, it won't matter which one as you're not actually going to do any editing at this point. Apply 1 filter without changing any of its settings then use the Settings > Save Settings command. In the Save Preset dialog click the None button then click on Effects to save just that one filter. Now delete that filter and repeat for your next favorite.

I agree with Rick, a step-by-step procedure, perhaps with some screenshots along the way, may help us help you better.

I'm going to update my previous post. Some filters do load with initial settings when they are applied, others do not. For those that do, set everything to zeros or whatever you'd like for an initial condition, then save the preset.

Just turn them off before you save them. Then you can add as many as you want and they won't affect anything until you turn them on.

Ah, now this is becoming useful and I can follow what you are saying. Gave it a try  and set it up slightly differently. Set up all my filters, adjusted some to suit - some always have approximately the same settings for every image - then saved them as a Preset in a new Category. Bingo, a couple of clicks and all my Filters are there. Why isn't this explained in the manual? Suppose I should watch a few videos having paid my money for Plus.

Tomorrow, it is getting late here in Nova Scotia, I will delete this Preset and add in some Develop settings before saving, you know, Blacks, Structure, Contrast etc. I assume that one can set up an Import Preset to do some of these basic adjustments?

Yea, starting to like ON1 again! Thanks again for your help, you've worked hard on my behalf.

    Great answers

Actually if you are in Edit mode then you can save Favourite filters with a default Style to set favourite values, in fact you can set several favourites of the same filter with different Styles.

Click on Filter option rather than Presets on LHS of screen. This will display the list of filters. If you then select a filter it will display the results of applying the various Styles. Move cursor over one of the thumbnails and a heart will appear in top RH corner of thumbnail, click on this to mark it as favourite.

A Favourites category will now appear at the top of the list of filters, which can be used in the same way as Favourites category in Presets.

If you click on one of these it will replace any currently selected Effects filter, if you Option/Alt click then it will be added above any currently selected filter.

The favoured filters have the name of the selected Style so it might be worth saving a new Style with a name that indicates the filter, e.g. DC-Natural for Dynamic Contrast with Natural Style.

I am sure this is in the User Guide somewhere but I found it out by trying it out with a memory that I had read something somewhere about this at some point! Tests done on a Mac.

Probably not much different in practice from Preset option but might have conceptual advantage in separating out adding a single filter this way from applying several filters at once as a Preset to get a particular look, or a base starting point for all images.

Thanks David, all is good for the time being and my Preset with adjustments works. Well, until the next thing crops up that I don't understand.

One thing that was freaking me out was that Filters on the left hand side would come and go when I was in Develop. Then I found out that to get them to appear on the LHS you have to click on Effects on the RHS. This is just strange.

Also I found that I could set up all my filters adjusted to suit in one go and save them as a preset. I didn't use Brian's method, but he pointed me in the right direction. It's all a learning process.

    Thanks

    Donald

    Donald

    - Yes, if you use On1's Import process then you can apply a preset to all images as they are copied in.

    - On1's AI Auto option in Develop is good, I use this on my basic preset as I find it gives me a good starting point for most images. When you save a preset with Develop settings keep clicking on the arrows on the left of the options to save to reveal Colour & Tone>Tone. I deselect everything except Auto Tone.

    - If you have a filter that you normally mask in rather than apply to whole image or mask out then when setting up the filter in the preset invert the mask so that it is black. Then when saving preset click on arrow next to Effects to reveal Apply Masks then click in circle to select this option.

    - As Rick said above it is possible to include filters in a preset that are turned off. This can be useful if there are filters you only need sometimes or you want to make adjustments to image before applying them.

As an example here is my preset for working with B&W images. The bottom filters do the basic B&W conversion, including colour adjustment to allow underlying colour image to be adjusted to get the required B&W conversion. The Darken and Lighten filters are curves that apply darkening or lightning to image. I mask these in as required so they are included in preset with Black Mask so they have no effect until I reveal them by painting in on the mask.

Having made the B&W conversion I then paint light onto the image by applying a Black photo filter with reduced opacity and then mask out where I want the light to appear. As I don't want this to get in the way of the initial work on the B&W conversion the filter is stored in the preset with the correct values but turned off.

I sometimes tone the resulting image, add grain or make final exposure tweaks. I find the B&W filter is the simplest way of doing this. But as I don't always use it this filter is also included but turned off.

The final filter is a Vignette set to Big Softy. As again this is something I don't want enabled while working on the whole image so this too is included but turned off.

No Develop settings in this preset as I have a separate one that I apply to all images before I start to work on them, and would then adjust on an individual image before applying this B&W preset.

I have only started to use this preset having come across the technique during my lockdown learning of Photoshop but it is proving very simple yet flexible as it allows a simple one click B&W conversion plus the ability easily carry out more artistic manipulation of an image.

I hope this helps in your understanding of making On1 work the way you want it.

Thanks David, I now see that I can apply an 'import' preset. I will play around with settings for a while longer before I settle on typical import settings for my cameras.

Meanwhile, some of the other things you mention are for me a bridge too far at the moment, I'm coming from Lightroom 6! My photography is pretty 'straight', just tweaking rather than major changes - 75% of ON1 I don't need. I try very hard to get exposure right in camera, a throwback to too many years of film. I said earlier in this now long series of posts that I'm an Olympus user so with a histogram in the viewfinder there is no excuse for not getting exposure right - but I still get it wrong! Occasionally though I just want to blur a background a bit and this is easy and I've learned this in ON1.

Like your image, a sign of the times unfortunately.

    Thanks for your input.

    Donald
