Star Ratings Transfer between programs

The metadata gets stored in sidecar files. As long as you move the .xmp file with the image file the other programs should see them. RAW files cannot store editable metadata but pixel formats and .dngs can so you can use the Embed Metadata Command to ensure your metadata is saved with the image and not just in the sidecars.

Thanks.  I will do some testing to see if that is working.  It didn't seem to be, but I will do more diligent testing.

I see the sidecar menu item in preferences and it is checked.  What happens if I uncheck it since this doesn't seem to affect .xmp files?

    Thanks, again.

If you uncheck that option the program will stop saving the .on1 sidecars which store your edits giving you a backup should something happen to the internal database and allow you to transfer the image file with its edits to another computer for more editing. The User Guide (pg 206) specifically mentions the .on1 but says nothing about the .xmp files so I assume it will continue to create them and embed the metadata into them.

So I did some testing on a blank directory with 10 files.  I imported and changed the star ratings and then imported them into Photo Supreme, Capture One and Photo Mechanic.  None saw the star changes in On1.

The good news is that each saw the star changes almost immediately if any of the other programs changed the star rating.  :)

I went to my testing folder and removed all star ratings from the images there. That change showed up in Adobe Bridge immediately with the exception of a dng file which had its star rating embedded with the Embed Metadata command. After I used the Embed Metadata on it Bridge showed star rating cleared.

Next I gave the images star ratings. Again, they showed up immediately for everything but the .dng.

I embedded the metadata for the dng file and it showed right up.

    • Have you turned off the option to use sidecars in Preferences > Files? That should affect only the .on1 sidecars though. I believe .xmp files will still be created.
    • What type of image files are you working with?
    • Have you used the Embed Metadata command? I added a hotkey for that command on my system because I use it so often.

BTW, I think I'm going to report the DNG behavior as a bug.

Yes, these were all .dng files.

Good news was that I used the embed metadata command and all worked out as it should.

I do agree that this sounds like a bug.  As I typed this I guess I should see if I read the metadata from the .dng that I put in in another file whether it also sees the changes as well.

Looks like the 9231 version released today has fixed this.
