Edited Images Keep Disappearing
I'm done with ON1. I just spent almost an hour editing an image in the new release. I clicked Done and went looking for it in Browse. GONE!! Not to be found anywhere. This is the 3rd-4th instance of this happening (including with the previous version). It's all been reported to Support and I'm told there's nothing they can do. They even asked me to send them the edited images that I had worked on but had disappeared. What part of disappeared don't they understand. I loved ON1 but I'm not about to be their Beta Tester. They shouldn't be releasing new products before they're fully tested. I even upgraded my video card thinking that would help. Nope.
-
So you're saying that your original RAW file was deleted?
0 -
No, my original is still there. It's the .on1 photo (the edited image) that has disappeared. This kept happened in the previous version as well as the latest version. Support told me they were unable to help me. They even asked me to send them the edited images - even though they were gone.

This is what's confusing because you keep saying GONE!! Not to be found anywhere.
- Is there ANY .on1 file (not photo) or is there an .on1 but it has no edits.
- Do you have sidecars enabled in your preferences?
- are your images on an internal drive or external?
- Mac or Windows?

The .on1 file is not an edited image. It is a text file that stores the edits which have been made. They are not visible in the program's Browser.
An image which has been edited has a badge in the lower right corner of its thumbnail preview that shows it has been edited.
How are you entering the editor? There are 2 ways and they have different results when you finish the edits. You can select an image in the Browser then press the D, S, or A keys, or, click the Edit Module icon in the window's corner.
When you leave the editor the edits get saved to the .on1 sidecar file and in the program's database. You can re-enter the editor and see the edits you've made.
The second way is to double-click an image or press the Return key with an image already selected. This takes you into Single Edit Mode. When you finish editing and click the Done button or press the G key the image is exported with the edits to a new psd, tif, or jpeg file. The edits are NOT retained. You have to look for a new file with the same name, different extension.
You mentioned previously that your system was crashing. Is this still happening? If the program crashes all bets are off whether the edits are saved or not. It will depend upon the .on1 file having been written to save the new edits before the crash happens. If the program is still crashing every time you run it and you've already reinstalled as you've mentioned, there is something more going on with your system.
• Are you running anti-virus software? You'll want to configure it so it does not live monitor the Scratch space and the PerfectBrowseCache. Both programs can't have full access to the drive at all times and do their jobs without getting in each other's way.
• Have you verified the condition of all the drives you are using? Do they have plenty of free space, especially the system's boot drive?

I probably have the extension wrong.
Here's my workflow and what is happening:
I open an image in Edit, do Tone/Colour, add Effects, add a layer (usually my Watermark), add a stamped layer, click 'Done' to go back to Browse. The edited image is no where to be found. This also happens if I click 'G', or click 'Browse' instead of 'Done'. It also happened in the previous version. As I've said, Support told me they are unable to help me. I even had them ask me for my 'Edited' image, even though it was gone.
Here's another one for you. I just did this. I clicked on 3 images then clicked on the 'HDR' icon. ON1 made the HDR image with a _HDR.on1photo extension. In Browse the image is blank. I can see the file name but no image. When I double click the image it opens fine. I can see it. If I click Edit it's still there. If I don't make any Edits to the image and just click Browse. The image shows up in Browse as blank. Even if I just do Tone/Colour and then go back to Browse it's blank.
This product has not been tested very well. We (the users) shouldn't be doing ON1's Beta Testing for them.

In your first example, you'll be looking for an onphoto file with the same name as the original. If your browser is sorting alphabetically, they are supposed to be next to each other.
In the second example with the blank image try using Refresh image. I have a similar problem but it's not that anything is missing, just that the image didn't render.

If your browser is sorting alphabetically, they are supposed to be next to each other. On my Mac they do not sort into position right away. They usually end up at the bottom of the Browser window. That could be why you are not seeing them. If you have more images than fit in the window they could be off screen until you force the Browser to resort the display.

Rick, trust me, the onphoto file is not to be found. The original is still sitting there. I've scrolled through Browse, changed the sort - gone. This is happening to many Users, not just me. I can see that in the Facebook page.
If Support says they can't help I'm not sure how you or the Support Forums can help me.
When I used LR I never had issues. Since leaving LR almost a year ago I've spent a lot of time and energy on ON1. For what? I personally think ON1 would be a great product if it worked the way it's supposed to.

Brian, see my answer to Rick.

and what about checking the folder on your PC (outside of On1). Is it there or not?

You still have not told us how you are entering the editor. Are you in Single Image Mode? It's hard to help when we ask questions that go unanswered.
0 -
I'm not sure what you're asking Brian. But, I'll try and explain what I do.
I open ON1, from my Task Bar, it opens in Browse at the last folder I was in (usually the folder that contains images I'm going to edit). I then double click on the image that I'm going to edit and go through my Workflow that I explained earlier.
Does that answer your question?

Yes it does. Please see my description above about 2 different ways to enter the editor. You are in Single Image Mode which does not save your edits in a re-editable form. There are no .on1 files created when you edit this way. When you return to the Browser, regardless of how you do it, your edits are baked into a new exported image file, probably a .psd, it will depend upon your Preferences > Files settings.
There is a preference setting for the default action that is performed by a double-click. The program's default is to enter the editor in Single Image Mode. You can change that to stay in the Browser and show the image full screen if you like.
If you want to retain your edits you have to select your image to be edited, then either press the D/S/A/I key to take you directly to the Editor panel you want or click the Edit button at the top of the screen as I also described above.
The program is working correctly. May I ask if you have read through the User Guide?

Brian, are you sure. Doesn't look like Single mode to me.
Harry, I'd like to see a screenshot of Browse so that we're all on the same page.

Brian, this does not happen all the time. It's intermittent. It's only happened twice with the latest version and 4 or 5 times with the previous version. I use ON1 daily using layers etc. So, the program is not working correctly. As I've said, if ON1's Support Dept. can't help me I fail to see how you can.
This is my last comment on this software. I have better things to do with my time. Thank you for the help that you've offered.

Yes, I'm sure. From the note at the bottom of page 26 in the User Guide (boldface is mine):
NOTE: If you wish to use the full non-destructive editing capabilities of Photo RAW when working on your photos, do not use the Edit a Single Photo option in the Getting Started window. Instead, inside Browse, find the photo you wish to edit, select it, and click on the Edit module selector on the right side of the main window. (See “Using ON1 Photo RAW 2020 as a Raw Editor” on page 8 for more about non-destructive editing and why it might be important to your workflow.)
Either the default setting for double-clicking in the Browser has changed or I'm mis-remembering again. You should double-check your settings Harry.

Brian, in my Workflow explanation previously I left out a step. Here's the updated one, when I open ON1 it goes into Browse at the last folder I opened. It's in Grid Mode, I then double click the image I want to edit. It opens in full size, still in Browse. I then click on 'Edit' and then start my Workflow.
This is the way you say above. Also, my Preferences are as you show.

Thank you for clarifying. It's those little things that can make all the difference. :)
How much free space is left on your boot drive? I know it's a reach but I'm trying everything I can think of that might be interfering with the program's ability to retain your edits. It just doesn't make any sense since they are saved in both a database, and in the .on1 sidecar if you've left that option on. I don't see how the program can miss both of those steps.
One other thing came to mind that Rick may have to help with. I've read about users having an older version of the C++ libraries that the program uses. Those older libraries behave differently than later versions. Rick, do you know what I'm talking about?

I have 593 GB of free space on my Boot Drive. It's a 1 TB drive. My ON1 cache is going to an 500GB SSD and that's the only use that drive is getting. There's nothing else on it except the cache. My images are on a 4 TB external drive with 1.25 TB free. Again, nothing but my images on that drive.

That's plenty of space. I wish I had that much in my laptop! :)
I'm with Rick that a screenshot of your browser window in Grid mode would be very helpful.

The C++ library is a long shot, but still worth a try.

By the way, I asked about the external drive in my first post. Why did it take this long to get an answer. Others are having problems with external drives as well.

Here's a my screen shot.

So, both of those images are showing that they have been edited. Are they. Do the edits show up?
0 -
Yes, the edits show up. The image on the left, with my watermark, took 2 tries before it worked. The 1st attempt the edits disappeared and I only had the original image. I redid it and it worked. As I said, its intermittent.

Rick, your link takes me to a C++ Library download. Are suggesting I download and run it?
0 -
Yes, it contains the version of the libraries that ON1 needs to run properly. It is a long shot that you do not have the correct version but it will not hurt to be sure.
1 -
Do you have any photos on your internal drive that you edit?
- If so, how do those work
- If not, maybe you should move some of your photos from the external and try it.
Could be a problem with the external drive
1 -
Rick, I ran the download link and got a message that my machine has a newer version on it. So, that's obviously not the problem.
I'm out of here as I'm heading off first thing tomorrow morning for a week of photography in Northern Ontario. I need to get a lot done before I go.
Thanks for all your help. As frustrated as I've sounded, I really do appreciate the help you've given me.
Cheers,
Harry

Ok, have a good trip.

I was wondering why external drives might be losing Data, so I did some Googling to see if it happens elsewhere. Apparently, drives do go offline by themselves. I don't know about Mac, but Windows has power saving options that shut down the drive or USB port to save power. What if that happens while you're busy editing a photo and then when you're done, On1 doesn't see that it's off and tries to write to it? I imagine Windows is supposed to prevent things like this, but you never know.
There are two ways to fix this in Windows:
1) Go to Power Options Advanced settings and turn OFF USB selective Suspend.
2) In the device Manager, You need to figure out which USB hub the drive is on (or do all of them) and disable power management for it.
I don't know if this is what's actually causing the problem, and I don't have the problem so I can't check it, but if someone wants to try it, let us know if it helps.
If it does turn out to be the problem, On1 would need to make a change to test the drive each time before writing to it.
Brian, do you think I should move this to a new thread?
