When relaunching, Photo Raw opens at the top level of the catalog
Normally, PR should reopen at the same location in the catalog hierachy that was open before exiting. With the latest update, it does so for a split second but then opens the top level Browse view.
On my two PCs. Have tried resetting (restart+SHIFT), to no avail. Am I the only one?
-
No, you're not alone. You can just be sitting idle in browse and it will spontaneously change to a top-level folder.
Most of the time when I open On1 it will remember where it was, but sooner or later it will change on its own. It's not new to the latest version, it's been a problem for a while now.
Go ahead and report it to On1 if you want to. The more times, the better.

Bernd, I have exactly the same issue. When I open PR it briefly shows me the last image I was in then jumps to the top.
I see the same thing on my laptop and desktop ( Win 10 both machines ) . One thing I did notice on my laptop is if I have folder cataloged it does it but if I do not have a catalog it does not exhibit this behavior. Going to test a bit to see if it's repeatable ( catalog vs no catalog ) before I submit a support ticket.

I reported this behavior last week. The advice given was that I should reset the settings. To no avail.
Thanks for your responses.

A little follow up. I did some testing on my laptop and desktop and can confirm the problem seem to be with cataloged folders only. If I close PR 2020.5 with a photo selected in a cataloged folder at the next startup browse briefly shows that selected photo then jumps to top level. If I close PR 2020.5 with a photo selected in an un-cataloged folder PR stays on that photo at next start. Both laptop and desktop are Win 10 machines. I have submitted a support ticket as well..

I'll go against the stream here and say that I have never encountered this during my years of using ON1.
And I'm using catalouged folders! And ON1 always opens in the latest used folder. Dosent matter if it is a catatlouged or un-catalouged folder.
I'm on a Windows 10 machine!

I'm not seeing this since the last update either. It used to be a problem but so far I'm always returned to the last image I had worked on when the program is relaunched. I have my entire Pictures folder cataloged.
If I have no image selected when I quit the program, it will open that folder, scrolled to the top, with the first image selected when relaunched. If I have an image selected when I quit, that same image is selected again when the program reopens.
The program always starts with the directory structure collapsed in either the My Catalogs or the Browse columns.

I find it annoying that the program doesn't open with the last folder you used.
You can reopen an image that you were editing and the browser doesn't highlight even the root folder of the directory you are working in, let alone the folder the image is actually in.
If the working folder were highlighted it would make finding images you took at the same time a whole lot easier.0 -
Are you saying that the Browser does not display the folder you were browsing when you last quit the program? Or, are you talking about the collapse of the My Catalogs/Browse columns?
You can right-click on an image and use the command Reveal in Folders to have the left side column expanded to show that folder.
I agree, it would be nice if that column was automatically expanded and I've reported it in the past. We need to keep reporting it. The more of us that report it as an annoyance and productivity slower the more likely it is to get fixed.
If the program is not returning you to the last folder you used, that is something you'll need to take up with support. The program is designed to bring you back.

Just curious are those that are not seeing browse jump to the top level of the cataloged folder they were in users of 360. I am a user of 360 and wondering if that is influencing this.
Just to be clear when I leave the program in a folder that is not cataloged On1 1 stays on the last photo I had selected when I reopen.
If I am on an image in a cataloged folder when I close the program when I reopen I briefly see that image then Browse jumps to the top level of that catalog. It's not just collapsed the top level is actually selected.
This happens every time for me every time I close / open on two different machines.
Image 1 below is browse just before closing PR
Image 2 below is after PR has fully opened and Image 3 below shows the directory tree expanded. You can see the top level is highlighted.

OK, so it is in fact changing the browse location. That sucks, it definitely should not be doing that and if deleting settings didn't help then it needs to go to support.

Brian I did turn in a support ticket yesterday. Still curious if those Windows users that do not see the issue on cataloged folders are 360 users. I'm using 360 and have a bit of a suspicion that is what's causing this. Of course I've been wrong before ;-)

If I'm browsing I see this directory (I'm not using 360.)
If I exit from here and relaunch the program, I see the same image as before but the directory only shows the root, not the exact file location:

Brian Gibson, It looks like your image is still selected I am guessing if you click the > beside the Eos 6D it will expand the tree and you will see the folder selected. That's a bit different than my issue where the very top level has been selected.
That said it looks like you do not use 360?

I've been having that problem for a while. Not sure when it started, but it was there before I had 360 running.

Rick seems there are kind of 2 issues going on. Are you saying you are seeing PR jump to and select top level on cataloged folder every time which is my issue and I think OP issue or do you just see the tree collapsed as Brian Gibson is showing.
You earlier said ( second post in this thread ) that you see it happen occasionally ---- and I'm paraphrasing
0 -
- I'm always viewing cataloged folders.
- Can't remember if the folder tree actually collapses. What I see is the browser (thumbnail area) goes to top-level and shows all of the top-level folders instead of the photos that I was working with. Next time it happens, I'll make note of the tree.

Rick, So you are saying it only happens occasionally? My issue happens every time at start of PR. Are you using 360?
0 -
I agree, there are 2 separate but closely related issues being discussed.
One is that the proper image is still being selected but the column display on the left has been collapsed. This is what I'm seeing and I am using 360 on a Cataloged file structure on the Mac OS.
The other, David's issue, is that the browser is returning to the root of his file structure and not retaining the last working location.

I dont use 360

- I am using 360, but the problem was there before 360
- When I open On1 as far as I know it always goes to the last used photo. It can change any time after that. Could be as soon as a minute, or as long as a few hours.
It happens enough that I have a 'Hold' album that I add any photo that I'm working on into so that I can easily find it again after the position gets lost.

Rick, that seems to be a third issue - I never have PR go to and select top level when I am in On1 one I can leave it sit open on an image all day. It only happens at startup for me and only on a cataloged folder. Once I select a folder/phot it stays - until next start.
Hakan - Thanks, so you do not use 360 and do not have the issue described. That's one data point ;-)

As David Kick explains: "If I am on an image in a cataloged folder when I close the program when I reopen I briefly see that image then Browse jumps to the top level of that catalog."
Same on my two Windows PCs, one being a high performance gaming configuration, the other one a Surface Pro.
Have tried resetting on both, to no avail.0 -
Bernd, are you using On1 360?
0 -
BTW, I'm using ON1 360 on both.

Brian Gibson, It looks like your image is still selected I am guessing if you click the > beside the Eos 6D it will expand the tree and you will see the folder selected. That's a bit different than my issue where the very top level has been selected.
No. The image is selected but if I expand the directory tree only "EOS 6D" remains highlighted, it does not expand to the year/month/actual file location, which is what I find annoying..
That said it looks like you do not use 360?
I mentioned at the start of my post I was not using 360.
This problem was evident well before 360 came along.

As another data point, I am not using 360 but am using the most recent release of PR. When I close the software I have an image selected in browse with the (cataloged, "My Catalogs") folder structure expanded to show the location of the image. When the program restarts it has the same image selected but the folder structure is collapsed to the top node. So... I have to use the right-click "reveal in explorer" and then scroll down.
First prize would be to have the software start exactly as it ended.
Second prize would be to have "reveal in explorer" also select/highlight the folder and scroll it into view.

A bit of follow up as discussed earlier it seems there are three problems discussed in this thread. As Brian points out above 1 & 2 below look to be closely related
1st is the OP ( Brend's ) problem and mine:
At startup browser is returning to the root of of file structure and selecting top level.
I have submitted a support request on this . Stevie from support indicates this issue has been forwarded to to the Dev team as a bug.
2nd is ( Henry, Brian, Brian, Nitin ) :
On open, the proper image is still selected but the column display on the left has been collapsed. If expanded the browser tree does not highlight where the image is located
Hopefully those with this problem are submitting support requests. Note, Stevie asked me for my log file. When I sent it to them for my problem I also provided screen captures to show them what I was seeing.
3rd is Rick's problem:
Browse randomly changing while using On1.
Rick, I'm guessing you have already reported this one.

I've found that even though the left side column has been collapsed and shows the root of my photos folder highlighted all I have to do is expand its entry and the correct folder is properly highlighted. Yes, if I do a Reveal in Folders command it will also expand the folder hierarchy without highlighting the selected image's enclosing folder. That's a bug that's been around for quite a while.

So, I said I would post an update.
I was just away from my PC for an hour after a couple of hours of work. When I returned the catalog tree was closed and the grid was showing the top most folders in that catalog.
If I open the tree, it's the top folder that's active. (see screenshot)
David, not sure if this particular problem was reported by me.
I remember reporting a problem with Reveal in Folders not working. Not sure about this one since it doesn't happen for me very often. I do remember others mentioning this problem before in the forum and I was unable to replicate it at the time. That was quite some time ago, last year maybe.

I hate to revive this thread but just so folks know, the problem Bernd discusses in the OP which is the same problem I have been having has finally been replicated by the On1 team and now on their bug list.
Response received from Stevie at On1 today:
We have finally been able to reproduce the issue you have reported and have created a bug ticket for the problem.
It is now with our dev team for further investigation, prioritization and fixing.0
