Error (256)
AnsweredHi everyone!
Just curious to hear if anybody knew what "Error (256)" means?
I know this question has been posted already two years ago, but there is no answer to it.
My ON1 Photo Raw 2020.5 on macOS Mojave used to work fine (and actually still does) except for the fact that I don't seem to be able to create a new layer with a sky (no matter where I pick the sky jpg from) with said error code.
But strangely enough, sometimes it does work, and I don't understand when and why!
I have submitted a ticket and I am awaiting a response, but this thing drives me crazy!
So, if anyone has any clue, please let me know.
Thanks and best regards,
JM

Here are a couple of things you can try.
• Reset the program's settings for macOS by holding the Shift key while the program is launching. You'll see a dialog for resetting various program settings. Click the option for macOS 10.15 Upgrade.
• Have you checked the file system structure for your drives with Disk First Aid or one of the 3rd party utilities?
Those are the first two things that come to mind.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
The disk volume appears to be OK; I also checked file system permissions and stuff like that, and everything is OK. But I suspect the problem must be file system related, somehow, because I can definitely create a duplicate layer in my photos, mask them, etc. It's just not possible to get access to the requested jpg files when creating a new layer. As for resetting the program, I'd rather do that as a last resort; in fact, I have downloaded the latest version of ON1 2020.5, which is somewhat younger than the Upgrade version, and reinstalled that one. So, apparently, resetting it would take me all the way back to ON1 2019 and upgrade again. I think I'll wait and see if technical support has any other suggestions.
Best regards,
JM

No, using the macOS reset will not affect your copy of the program. It resets the program's permissions to the file system. Catalina introduced some invisible changes to the file system. The Macintosh HD is now 2 separate pieces that the OS ties back together to be presented as it always has while managing different permissions to the different pieces. The macOS reset only affects those filesystem permissions.
Even the others don't affect the version of the program you have installed. Only the setting files the program uses are deleted, either your personal settings, or the entire program's settings. That will reset the settings to what they were would be when you first install the version you are currently running. You do loose the pointers to your Albums & Catalogs, etc but you can prepare for that before doing the reset to make recovery easier.

I looked through that same article before I responded above. :) Thanks Nitin.

Hi,
After a few more investigations and with the help of tech support I did a manual uninstall of 2020 and reinstalled it. (I had already done a "reinstall over", but this time I manually removed all 2020 related files first. I'll list them below for anyone who might have this problem in the future.)
The application now behaves itself again and I don't get this Error 256 anymore.
Unfortunately we'll never know what caused the issue in the first place, but I guess we'll have to live with that. Thanks for your help anyway.
Regards.
Manual removal of ON1 2020:
1) in /Library/Application Support/ON1 delete all 2020-related files
2) do the same in ~/Library/Application Support/ON1
3) in ~/Library/Preferences delete all instances of com.oneonesoftware.ON1-bla bla-.plist files
4) donwload the latest 2020 dmg package from zendesk and install
This fixed the problem for me.0 -
That was going to be my next suggestion. I gave them that script. ;)
Glad you're up and running again.
