Automated Description Entry?

Not with Photo Raw. The only place I can think of where the filename might be accessible is in the Text tool. Metadata does have presets, but you need to set them yourself, they do not read filenames.

I should point out though, that if the info is in the filename, you don't need to copy it to metadata, you can already search filenames.

If you have a number of photos that need the same keywords added, group them together and add the keyword to all of them at the same time.

Thanks.  I do group photos and add keywords, and sometimes group photos and add a description.  I know the filename can be searched.  In my situation, the filenames were done by others and they include a lot of info that really shouldn't be in the filename - for instance, the filename may include all the names of folks in the group photo, location where the photo was taken, etc.  So ideally I would take all that info in the very long filename and add it as part of the metadata, then rename the photo to a shorter and more succinct name.

Ok, so search all of the filenames for 'Aunt Edna', select them all and add that keyword to all at one time.

During your search for Aunt Edna, you'll be able to see what other names you'll need to search for until you get them all done.

On1 will make a list of what's been done, but you might want to keep a list of the ones you need to do.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I don't think that's a very practical solution in my case, but I'll keep that idea in mind.  I have my photos grouped by year from the mid-1800's through today.  "Aunt Edna" could appear throughout a 70-year history - and unfortunately there will also be photos that didn't list her in the filename.  It's more logical to me to work with each year and the sub-folders within that year.  I include keywords for other things besides names as well.  But it is helpful to know that I could get a quick grouping of pics of Aunt Edna by searching the filenames.

But it's the Description field I was hoping to automate - I find myself often using the Rename File function and then copying the file name and pasting it into the Description field - sometimes the subfolder contents fall into a general theme and I can select all and populate the Description field - but often I can't.

George, are you using Wndows or Mac? There are keystrokes/macro recorders for both platforms that could help you out.

Forgot to add, you could also use the exiftool to replace the description in the image files and hopefully ON1 will pick the change.
