menu text is too small

The program does not have any controls for that. The only way to make that kind of change is with the screen resolution.

Menu tex sizes have not changed. 2020 is on the top, 2021 on the bottom. Same goes for the items in the MenuBar at the top of the screen. Both programs use the default size provided by the OS.

Well, you are correct the size has not changed, but how they are displayed has.

2020 on the left, the text is white, on 2021 the text is middle grey, so grey on black is harder to read.  The OS has not been changed.  See also the size of the Nav window at the top, much smaller in 2021.

    Those are not menus. 😉

Yes, the UI was modified as noted in the Release Notes. This is one of those things that some folks will like and others will not. Unfortunately, "You can't please all the people all the time." - Abraham Lincoln

Sorry did not get the technical name correct.

Other programs seem to be able to control UI. Using the OS this way is a poor way to control it.  Change the text size and other programs don't display well.  UI changes are usually positive, not this one.

Chris, the font in the numbers next to the sliders is definitely smaller, and that, combined with the light grey against dark grey background sadly makes the new version all but unusable for me. Thankfully, I kept the 2020.5 version on my machine, so I'll just have to keep using that for now. I can see the numbers with that!

I agree, text is too hard to read now and having the body and headers all the same color makes things hard to find.

Wish they would just let us set our own colors.

Alan, if you're going to use 2020.5 "for now"... don't expect the text to change again in this version. It would be 2022 at the earliest.

The other thing I see that is a bit disappointing but not a deal breaker is they may have removed the accent color from the selected tabs. This might be a UI bug since I can see the highlight color briefly when the tab is first selected.

The unfortunate part is the metadata area (description, add keywords and keyword) was hard enough to use/edit in 2020, now it is harder again.  This area needs a re-think.

It seems that the balance between function and cool design has tipped into cool design.  It is possible for them to work together.

I did find making the (selected) colour in Preferences bright and obvious helps.

I too would like to see the option for brighter text.  I'm on MacBook Pro 16 and even with that I have to focus to see the gray on dark gray text.

Regardless of age or eyesight, an option to adjust text size is warranted for high resolution displays. 4K is no longer exceptional and photographers benefit from high resolution screens, especially when working with high resolution images. Choosing a high resolution screen should not come at the expense of UI readability.

I agree, an option to adjust text size and text colour or contrast within the program.  I am using a 5K iMac so using the OS to make the side panel text bigger makes the menu text at the top huge along with browsers, desktop, etc.

So, do the developers read these forum and see a number of us are asking for this option or do we need to submit requests another way?

They do monitor these forums but they only respond when necessary.

The place to make suggestions for improvements to the program is the ON1 Photo RAW Project page. Users offer their suggestions then others vote on the idea. Once an idea has garnered 200 responses with a 3 or higher rating the company will take a look at it. It can take a while before the suggestion is made public for the voting so be patient.

I just posted a suggestion but it needs to be approved my the moderator. I did search to see if anyone else had posted but didn't see anything.  Maybe everyone who posted here could rate it.

Thanks, Larry. Nobody will be able to vote on it or even see it until it has been approved by the moderator. Right now everyone is busy with the new 2021 upgrade so it will be a while before new suggestions are reviewed for approval.

i concur. the text is nearly unreadable for my 75 year-old eyes. ON1 should address the issue immediately!

I am also finding 2021 difficult to use for the same reason as others on this site, i.e. the small font used in the editing dialogues and the low contrast between the colour of that font and the background.  This needs to be corrected as soon as possible.  In the meantime I am going back to using 2020.

I hope this is reported to the developers and will be addressed sooner than waiting for response to the "suggestion" I reported. I too am going back to 2020 just it's more comfortable to use.

edit. I just sent a technical request for this issue and mentioned the forum topic to add weight that the issue is not just mine.

Everyone who would like to see this changed should report the new UI design as a 'bug'. Send Support Requests. Expect to get the, "That's the way it is" response but if enough people complain, who knows, they might decide to do something about it.

I for one don't mind the font size, however the gray text color against the black background is very hard for my eyes to read.  I have always loved ON1 software and I'm a avid supporter.  This issues is very disappointing and makes my work much harder.  Please, Please issue a fix for this.

Andre, I with you re font size, I would like to see the ability to select font color similar to the way we can select highlight color,

Richard, same email I received when submitting to Technical Support. Key part may be "tracking user feedback with these changes."  They don't say what they're tracking though. Hopefully Support, Suggestions, and Forums.

I would appreciate the ON1 programmer to listen to the crowd above and make changes to the UI.  Gray on black is not a good idea. Non change-able font sizes either.  Please help us. The program is OK the UI, not only the legibility but also the process flow  can be better.

Paul, you need to tell that to tech support directly. The engineers don't read these forums. Customer support pops in once in a while but this isn't where they go to listen to the users. It's usually in response to something only they can help with.

Who has already reported this issue? Can someone share a link to their request? You can find your requests at https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests.

We can then chime in the same request to let ON1 know how important this issue is to their customer base.

I don't think we can share our requests with other users. A lot of us have reported their dislike directly to support. You should too.

Brian Lawson I was hoping filed requests can be accessed by ON1 members after sign-in. Can you let me know if you can access my image rotation bug?

All, if you haven't please do submit a support ticket on this issue. On1 is listening.

Response from Ryan on initial ticket complaining about the grey text etc..:

"Thanks for using ON1 and providing your feedback!  The behavior you're seeing with the tabs and highlight color are by design in Photo RAW 2021.  This behavior was changed from how it works in Photo RAW 2020.  We're keeping an eye on similar customer feedback with the latest UI changes made in Photo RAW 2021, and appreciate your input. "

I responded and made some other suggestions and asked why the UI was changed. The response from Ryan in support

"Much appreciated.  I'll certainly pass along your feedback.  We already have some changes in the works based on feedback, but I can't provide exact details or timing at this moment.  The UI was changed and updated based on previous feedback, and to give the program a new look.  We typically change/update styling between each major version of Photo RAW.  "

Bart, no I can't. Those are private and why we have to sign in before we can see them ourselves.

I sent a bug report on the rotation issue too and got a response that it had been passed to the engineers.

Thanks Brian Lawson for confirming that filed requests are private to the person who submitted the request instead of ON1 members. I really wished that ON1 would make filed bug reports accessible to ON1 members.

Sadly, the best we can do is all report the same issue individually and hope that ON1 takes action. Where does ON1 engage with the community on feedback? Aside from suggestions for new features?
