Performance Issues - Possible Fix: Disconnect from the Internet!
Since upgrading to 2021, I experienced very slow rendering when opening images, zooming and panning, and switching to edit mode. This only occurred on opening previously edited photos, and a pop-up Window stating "Loading Photo" appeared for up to 25 seconds. I cancelled 2021, but on reverting back to 2020, the same problem remained (where previously 2020 had no issues).
I do not use the "360" service and this has never been configured in the PC software. However, on closing Photo Raw ("PR"), I noticed a pop-up window stated something like "disconnecting from 360". I thought this was odd when I was not using 360. I also had the idea of disconnecting my PC from the internet and then re-opening PR. After doing this, the slow rendering was fixed!! And when I reconnected to the internet, the problem returned!!!
The only conclusion that I can come to is that every time a photo is opened, PR tries to make a connection to 360, even when 360 is not in use. Disconnecting from the internet prevents the attempted connection.
I will report my findings to Support. In the meantime I thought I would share this on the forum in case it helps other non-360 users who are experiencing performance issues - particularly when it is quick, easy, and safe, to try the potential fix.

2020 had an issue where it was checking 360 status even if you weren't subscribed to it. That issue should be resolved in 2021.
When upgrading from 2020 to 2021 make sure to update your graphics card to point to the new version.
You haven't mentioned catalogs, if they are building, everything will be slower until they finish.

Hi Rick,
I did mention that I have now cancelled 2021 and reverted to 2020, but yes, while I was using 2021 the graphics card settings had been updated accordingly, and the catalogs had completed. The same is subsequently true after returning to 2020.
From what you say about this being a known issue in 2020, maybe I was unlucky enough to hit different issues in 2020 and 2021, but which both showed the same symptoms. Now that would be hard to make sense of!

Have you updated to the newest 2020.6 (14.6.0.9837)? The release notes don't say which bugs were fixed, but the 360 issue could be one of them.

Yes, I have updated 2020 to the latest version.

I have just updated to version 2020.6 and was hoping for a fix.
It's very easy for me to review the horrendous 'no 360' bug. I just open Task Manager and look at the Ethernet card under Performance to see a network traffic spike 10 to 20 times per minute as long as the program is running, whether I'm doing anything with it or not. When I exit the program, the spikes disappear.
This has NOT been corrected in 2020.6. I was hopeful that the issue had been fixed, but no cigar.
The only way I can use the program is to disable my Ethernet card, which means no Internet access and no access to our servers. It also makes ON1 of limited utility for my purposes for the time being.

You'll have to take this up with support. There is nothing anyone here can do to help with this problem.

It should be corrected without having to report it. It's an egregious error in the software and renders it unusable for many applications. ON1's internal testbed should find the error automatically.
In addition, I'm led to believe that this is a known error, so why report it?
The reason for posting it here is to provide a diagnostic procedure for others. I have not yet seen anyone follow the diagnostic procedure I've recommended - i.e. open Task Manager and look at Ethernet traffic.
The fact that Roger Gough indicates 'disconnecting from the Internet' as a remedy indicates that he is likely experiencing the same issue. But to my experience the issue isn't a one time attempt to find the ON1 server. The program tries 10 to 20 times per minute as long as the program is running killing response time for any multiple photo edits, navigation and other CPU and disk intensive measures.
The issue will not impact single photo editing greatly, and it only affects non-360 users on a Windows computer.

I appreciate you reporting your findings for us and I hope others will find it useful.
[T]his is a known error, so why report it? The more people that report a problem the higher its priority for getting fixed becomes. The company has told us this itself.
Happy New Year Henry, looking forward to good things from our software.

Thanks, Brian.
Some good reasons and I can see you're not going to let me be lazy on this one, lol. Okay, I will get to reporting it this week... but not today. Stay well!

Just to add my observation and an update.
Henry is quite correct. Looking at the internet traffic in task manager, the difference is marked and obvious when Photo Raw is running compared with when it is not. And again, as Henry states, this is on-going and not a one-time call.
Sadly though, I did get a response from Support: "Unfortunately there isn't anything of note in the log pointing directly to the issue. I don't have any solutions other than to delete the settings file."
This doesn't give me any confidence of a solution being delivered. I hope you have more success Henry!

Interesting that I came across this while researching a separate very frustrating bug, but I can confirm by watching my Network Activity in the Windows Resource Monitor app On1 PhotoRaw 2021 is constantly using bandwidth, smh. And no I am not a 360 subscriber either.

I opened a new support ticket today after noticing 2 issues for PR 2020.6 , both of which could affect performance. I have had ongoing performance problems with PR that support has been unable to resolve. I found these using the SysInternals utility ProcMon.
PR seems to regularly be pinging several external IP addresses. I tried to ping them manually, and they don't appear to be valid. I have disabled OnOne 360, so I'm unsure what this regular activity is for. These are the 2 external addresses:
<my_machine>:51425 -> 134.199.225.35.bc.googleusercontent.com:http
<my_machine>:51436 -> 40.112.243.1:httpsIt also uses TCPIP to contact the local machine on a fairly regular basis as well. It might be possible to put entries in the OS's host file to redirect bogus traffic to the local machine using 127.0.0.1 entries, which might lessen the networking load. Hopefully support can get some useful information from the developers.
I also noticed that PR accesses every hard drive on my system once every second even though cataloging is disabled, even when the program is idle.

Those IP address which did not respond to your pings can still be valid. I have my system set to not respond to pings.
Whether you use cataloging or not the program still polls the drives to find new images it needs to know about.

The more important question is why does it keep contacting remote servers? We need to know if there is a valid reason for doing so, and if not, it shouldn't be occurring.
If Cataloging is disabled, then there doesn't seem to be a reason for PR to know about any new images that are created anywhere on my system. That's exacty why I disabled cataloging - it's overhead was killing my system's response time. At most, PR would need to scan the folder that I am currently displaying in the Browser in PR.

All I can guess is that it is part of the Cloud Sync service. Like the hard drives it continually polls looking for new photos that need to be synced to the desktop/laptop. I'm not saying it isn't a problem, I'm just trying to answer your "why does it do this" questions.
If you want to discuss the technical details you should be talking with the support folks. As you know, nobody here has any power to do anything about this. We do appreciate hearing your findings though.
