Finding "lost" photos
Hi there,
besides the awesome edit-features of ON1 I´m still struggling alot in my move from Lightroom when trying to organize my photos and albums.
One big thing is finding pictures that are not within an album. e.g. when I create a panorama-shot out of an album the file is not added to the album as it is done with HDRs.
In Lightroom there was a "trick" with a smart-collection that showed all images that are not within a collection. There all images where shown when there corresponding albums did not contain any letter. :-)
Is there any way how to achieve this in ON1 or do you guys have some tipps for me how to find those photos?
Thank you
Felix

I don't use albums, or haven't done yet anyway, but I'd assume that if you create a panorama from, say, three images that are in an album, then it will be found in the folder where the original three images reside. You can then add the panorama to the album manually.

Photo RAW isn’t album based like Lightroom. It works with the folder structure you’ve set up in your file system.
As Ray mentioned, panos & HDRs that are merged will be placed in the currently selected folder which should be the same folder as the source images when you are working in an album. You can Right-click an image and use the Reveal in Folders command to go to that location.

I would recommend putting photo groups like HDR, Pano and Focus in their own Sub Folders. That keeps the group together and the processed file will be there right next to them.

Thank you for your responses.
I get the point that I have to change my workflow somehow.
But still I dont understand why created panoramas are NOT added to the album I´m currently working on while HDRs or copys of photos will be added to it. This behaviour is inconsistent and confusing.
Usually I would have my folders like year/month/day and then I aggregate them in an album for e.g. my three week vaccation in Dubai named "Dubai 2015". Then I want to have my HDRs created there also in this album. Regarding your tips I should stop creating albums and directly import all photos - including the bracketed photos - into one folder and then import / add this folder to my catalouge?
Thanks and best regards

The only change you need to make to your workflow is to switch from the album to the actual folder containing the images to be merged before performing the merge. Once the merge is done you can drag the resulting .onphoto to the album. From then on you can work with it from either location.
Albums are not physical collections like a folder. They are logical collections that require their members to be added. This used to be simple with Smart Albums as the .onphoto file carries the metadata from its components. I use color flags to identify my HDR & pano files so a smart album keyed to those flags would automatically pick up the new merge.

I understand that ON1 is based on folders instead of albums.
But still:
Am I the only one thinking the current behaviour when working inside of an album is inconsistent? (HDRs and copys are added but panoramas are not)0 -
Felix: are you on Windows or Mac? If what you say is indeed the case, then I agree it's an inconsistency and worth reporting to Support.

What about images that are sent from On1 to another programme for editing?

I do not use other editing-software. So I dont know.
Richard yes I already experienced this. :-(

I forwarded a similar complaint that when I send an album photo to Silver Efex, the newly created photo gets put into the original folder, but not added to the album. Its not the end of the world, but it is a "speed bump" in the process to go back, find the new photo, and add it to the album.
Logically, if you are working on a photo in an Album and send it to another program, you most likely want the new photo in the same album.

The thing is that Albums do not hold image files. They are virtual collections that do not exist in any place on your hard drive. The only thing they store are pointers to where the photos they contain are stored on disk. The Send To command automatically exports as you know and that always gets saved in the same folder as the original.
Do you know about the Reveal in Folders command? It will take you to the folder holding the image and your exported file will be right there.

I learned about the Reveal in Folders command in your comment above, and that makes things easier.
However, it should be relatively easy to create a pointer in the album to the new photo. The EXIF data is copied to the new photo, why not a routine that checks the albums for a pointer to the original and creates one for the new photo?

Because not everyone would want that. Me for one. I do not want multiple copies of the same photo in an album. The only thing I want in my albums are finished edits or work that I've set aside for some reason—bugs in the software, undecided about what to do with the photo, etc.
Photos that I'm going to send to another program get moved into their own sub-folder on my system. That keeps all the pieces together but separated from the rest of my work.
You could make a suggestion on the ON1 Photo RAW Project page to have this added with a preference setting to turn it off or on so it would work for each of us the way we'd like.
