Fringes after masking
AnsweredI have an image which I have been trying to resurrect from a trip to Sedona. It was taken on an old digital Rebel and is pretty sharp. There was a semi-overcast sky behind the classic red rock of the area. The rocks area almost black. I have tried masking as a local luminosity adjustment and AI masking to create layers and all looks good until i start to increase exposure or mid tones on the rocks and a darkish brown "band" or "fringe" starts to appear along the edge of the rocks. Using the chisel tool results in a white area being revealed. I am trying to print this 13x19 and this defect is very clear. My last attempt was to duplicate the image into layers and use AI to separate rocks and sky. Same results. I will send this to tech support unless someone here can offer some help. I can post the raw file if you feel ambitious.

BTW, there area some small trees along the riidge line and the luminosity mask did the best job of definition of edges. The AI mask with layers was less successful.

I see the same thing happening when I push the contrast between the sky and rocks too far. You might be able to do something with the mask's Feather slider.
Another option is to use Blending modes combined with Luminosity masks. I've had better results with this method.

Brian, thanks for the tip on blending. I have tried the feather without much success. I was hoping that using layers would help but no luck there. Will start fresh tomorrow with your suggestion and report results. The only fiddly bit are some small trees above the ridge link which I could happily do away with if I could solve this bigger problem.

Brian, not being familiar with blending modes, I pulled up Dylan's You Tube Mini-Course and started watching. The first filter he pulled in was Curves and watching what he was able to do with that I decided to abandon the local adjustment/mask/layers approach and just use Curves. I was able to bring out the rocks and then apply a Color Enhancer to brighten the reds/oranges, all without touching my cloudy sky. Added a Sunshine and I am happy with my results. This image will join a great (If i do say so) two shot vertical pano of the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona. I am glad I didn't have anything else suitable as I have learned a lot in trying to bring this image back to life. Thanks again for the tip!

Cool, glad you were able to find something that worked.
