Awful printing results (ON1-2021 / Big Sur / Epson)
(Here is a copy of a post that I made on "General discussions" 2 weeks ago but I got no answer, so ... I try here ;) )
Sorry to say that but I'm really fed up with ON1 printing problems.
Previously were the sizing and positioning issues (never really solved). Sizing & margins settings are more a game of luck than a predictable work.
But the ultimate has been reached with ON1-2021 (15.1.0.10148).
With this release, the print result is always an ugly rough draft.
It seems that ON1 totally ignores the specific setup of the printer and send to the printer a "draft request". The first proof of that is that the printing is very fast, it should normally be 3 to 4 times longer (minimum).
The config is :
ON1 (15.1.0.10148)
MAC Book-pro / Big Sur (last release 11.2.3)
Printer : EPSON STylus Pro 4800, last EPSON driver for Big Sur : 10.85
It is clear that the problem is coming from the handling of the printer by ON1 and NOT from my MAC/OS/Printer/driver configuration because if, rather than printing directly from ON1, I export the photo to a file (PDF or TIFF) and then print this file with another software (ie : Adobe reader), the result is perfect. (So I have a workaround but it is not convenient for printing many pictures)
Anyone has got a similar problem ?
Thanks for your help

Sadly I have raised the printer module on ON1 as being weak more than once. I have to print from Lightroom to get the highest quality needed for competitions.
I really like ON1 and would say that it is one of the best pieces of software, but printing is one of its weaker points.

Have either of you contacted technical support about your problems?
Hudson Henry has a video on printing, have you seen it? It's for Plus members though. https://www.on1.com/videos/printin.g-tips-tricks/
Here are other videos which may help. https://www.on1.com/videos/?fwp_video_library_categories=printing

I have contacted Tech support. I have seen the video and bought an I1 studio monitor profiler. I have profiled my monitor, my printer and followed his advice to the letter. However, I am sorry to say, the print module in ON1 is just the poorest part. It is much simpler to export to my old LR5 and print from there, especially as I can then use print studio pro. I realise that each software package does things its own way, but since owning ON1, the print module has been the most disappointing. It is just too fiddly and long winded.
Sorry, but as a real fan of ON1, this is my only real gripe.

Theses videos (on the On1 internet site) explain how to make perfect prints... from LightRoom !!!
I have been using LR for years before On1, I know that LR print module is very good and I know how to use it. The problem with On1 is that even if you define and set print parameters for a excellent printer (Epson 4800 Pro), when you click the "Print" button, the software ignores all these defined parameters and send a draft version of the picture to what it considers to be a low quality printer...
If you add the fact that there is no options to precisely define size and position of picture and margins on the paper... Clearly the On1 print module is unusable (for me)

Totally agree. Same problem but with an excellent Canon printer. Just getting the size correct is a nightmare. In LR I can size the print exactly as I want it and print it. If I want to go one step further, I sent it to Print Studio. Generally I can print from LR5 many times faster than I can in ON1, simple because the LR interface is easy to use and it does what I want, not what it wants. I did ask the few other photographic club ON1 users and no one prints from ON1…glad I am not alone in being concerned.

Go to Hudson Henry's YouTube channel. He has frequent "office hours" presentations where users can ask him questions live. Ask him about your printing problems.

Tried that a last year after watching his video series..no reply to my emails. I have copied exactly what he does even following the video on on screen whilst trying to print on another, but it is just is too inflexible compared to LR. I used to do a great deal of printing for competitions, but haven't recently because of lockdown, but even now I still find that ON1 printing module just is too fiddly and never seems to give me what I want. Last week I printed off 5 photos for a friend's wedding from ON1. Had to do them all again because they didn't come out of the printer as I requested. Sizing the prints is very dubious and haphazard. Switched to LR5 and got them all printed off first time, exactly as they were on the screen.
Sorry but this needs the module looking at. I am a very experienced IT user (40+ years) even writing my own printer driver software in the days of line printers. This is an issue with the print module which is inflexible. I suggest that the engineers look at other print modules.
I am still a big fan of 95% of ON10 -
What I'm talking about isn't emailing. It is live interaction with him. It's worth a try.

Willing to try anything, BUT, still doesn’t negate the poor print module which is many years behind LR5.
Grateful for your time in answering, but ideally would still like the ON1 engineers to look at the problems. Tried again last night. Printed a photo onto A4 paper. Should have been centred, ended up at the top of the page (it fed the paper properly as I stood next to it and watched it) with a big gap at the bottom…same photo, perfect in LR5.

I don't mean to be insulting but it's possible you are doing something wrong for Photo RAWs workflow or maybe you're missing a step somewhere. Hudson can probably identify issues like that if you can get with him.
I don't have a printer so I can't do any testing myself unfortunately.

Not insulting at all. As I indicated I watched the videos on work flow several times and tried to print work as I followed the videos. I have spent hours and many sheets of photo paper trying. Sorry but in this case I will beg to differ and stick with my opinion that whilst ON1 is great and I don’t regret moving to it, if someone with 40 years IT experience working with everything from Super mainframes to one chip computers and working with a significant number of OS’s can’t print properly with ease then there may be a little something wrong.
I also test scientific kit, so have to solve quite difficult problems with both software and hardware…this one has almost beat me. If the printing can be as easy with ON1 as it is with LR5, then I would ditch my old copy of LR5 immediately.
I know you guys actually listen to your customers and as I have said printing is my only gripe, the rest is really excellent.
if there was an easy way to contact him and actually go through a printing task I would..
Anyway thanks once again for your interest. It is much appreciated
Ps.You don't need a printer, send it so a jpeg or pdf file.

Unfortunately, the program won't open the Print dialog unless it finds a printer connected to the computer.
Just an FYI but you are not talking to the company here. We are just other users like yourself.
I assume you are a Plus member? Have you tried posting on the Plus forums or in the comments on the video's announcement page? I know that he replies although it could take a while if he is on one of his seminars.

Guy's I'm a cannon printer user so can't comment from experience re Epson printer but with that said -- I am 99% positive I saw, in either this forum or the plus forum, a thread about the same issue ( poor print quality ) with Epson. If I remember correctly in that thread the resolution was to go through the Epson printer dialog boxes and change a setting so the Epson driver was not interfering with what On1 was sending it. I tried searching for the thread but can't find it. I hesitated to post this because I don't know the exact answer in that thread but it's a thought.

Sincere apologies, I thought you were part of the team. I hope no offence was taken.
On my Mac I can select a random print connected or not (not at present). I then go to printer setup and select print to pdf. I then press save as pdf. Press save on the settings. When I press the print button..a printed pdf appears...
Sadly I am not a plus member...nothing really that I need (until now) from being a plus member.

Hi David
I am a canon user. I do go through the dialogue boxes. Its the placement of the print that is the issue and occasionally poor quality. I also use non standard print sizes (panoramas) and these are a nightmare to get right.

No problem John, it's a common mistake. 😀
I remember the post that David mentioned. I'll see if I can find it and post a link.

Still feel bad about it.
Try the pdf trick. It is actually very useful for testing prints

Just selecting the Print command without a printer connected to the computer gives me the dialog I showed above. I use the Print to PDF option in other apps.

Glad to hear it. However seems strange. I can print to pdf from the ON1 print dialogue. Let me look again...

I think this is what David and I were remembering.
I had similar experiences on Mac OS and On1 2020 and reported it to support but please enter your own ticket. It's incredibly frustrating and I still can't say definitively where the ON1 print logic is broken but would suggest you try a few things that worked for me eventually:
- Make sure you are printing from the Browse module not from Edit module
- In On1 print dialogue, top right, click on Print Setup and for that chosen printer make absolutely sure in for example Page Attributes that the right paper size is in fact selected ( I found sometimes it was not ). Go through all those Print Setup options to be sure there are no borders or funny stuff in the Printer setup from previous sessions. Last used and default settings; are they all spot on?
- Back in On1 print dialogue Select "Custom" and enter your 20" width and 16" height; longest length first
- Under Fitting Choose "Fill"
I hope this works for you. If and when you have Custom sizes working as required then go back into On1 Print Dialogue and choose again your 20*16 in Custom size then click on "+ More" button and then "Save New style" so you can store that 20*16 for retrieval the next time
I know it's about Epson and you're on Canon but hopefully it will help.

That would be useful. During lockdown I had time...
Thanks guys!

Hi John, sorry I started with the 1st comment by Jean-Pierre in this thread and saw an issue was print quality.
The thread Brian found is not the one I remember. The one I was thinking of was about print quality not size/position. Still can't find the one I was thinking of but Jean-Pierre might find this knowledge base article useful - it shows some color management settings in Epson printer settings dialogs Color Management and ON1 Photo RAW – ON1 Support (zendesk.com)
I use a Canon Pro-100, I agree print size and placement can be a pain. If I run into something I can't get right through ON1 I will export the photo and use Canons excellent plug in Print Studio Pro to print. Their plug in only works in Lightroom or Canon's Digital Photo Professional software. I don't have Lightroom so obviously use the combination Canon's Digital Photo Professional + Print Studio Pro ( only issue here is you must have a Cannon camera to use Canon's Digital Photo Professional software.)

Same printer as me. I have to use print studio pro as on A3 and panoramic paper, which is expensive, I cannot afford to lose copies. I am lucky that I had a fully paid version of LR5 which I use with print studio, but have also used DPP 4.

I have the same problem Canon printer +Mac
On1 NOK
Mac desktop > print OK
I don't use it so much but, now I export and print it outside ON1
No solution , but we have a possibility export>print
thanks after reading this a spend no time on it anymore

Due to the lack of interest of the On1 team about this issue, I decided to stop using ON1 and I did not renew my subscription to new releases of the product. Sorry.
