ON1 2020 does not read rating information correctly
I have one catalogued folder for my edited Jpeg files in On1 and use that to create collections and export for social media.
I have set ratings for my final Jpegs that can be read in Windows Explorer, Adobe Bridge and Lightroom. When I change a rating in Explorer, Bridge and LR automatically update that rating.
On1 still uses some ancient rating information from the editing phase of the RAW files. It does not update the Jpeg rating. Even manually clicking 'Read metadata from photo" does not update the rating.
Is there anything that can be done to get On1 to work correctly in this regard?

The Read Metadata from Photo command is not doing what you think. You're actually moving in the opposite direction from where you want to be when you use it. What that command does is clear all the image's metadata, resetting it to just what the camera recorded.
ON1 records metadata changes in the .on1 and .xmp sidecar files like all the other programs and their metadata is compatible with them. Try using the Embed Metadata command instead. That command writes the metadata into the image file formats which support it. Raw files do not but jpegs, tiffs, psds, etc, actual image file formats do.

Thank you for your quick reply.
However I do not want to embed Metadata... My Jpeg files already have rating information which are recognised correctly by LR, Bridge and Windows. These images don't have any sidecar files. My problem is that On1 does not read these ratings at all.
It shows some other obsolete rating information that I don't need anymore. I'd like On1 to recognise the same ratings that the other programs show...1 -
The reason those images have that metadata without any sidecar files is because it has been embedded. If you want the metadata edits you make in Photo RAW to be visible without the use of sidecars you must embed it. Where else would another program be able to read it from? If you don't write it into the file those other programs will not be able to read it.
The differences you see between things like star ratings are due to a difference between what has been embedded in the image file and what Photo RAW has been told and you'll have to bring them into sync. The only way to do that is to manually set it in Photo RAW so it matches what has been embedded. Well, there is one other way but I am not recommending it. I'll let you decide if it's one you want to use.
You can use the Reset ON1 Photo RAW 2021 command that is made available when you hold a Shift key during the program's launch. That option will remove all your Catalogs, Keywords, & Albums. It will not affect any edits you've made but it will clear the program's metadata database. When you recreate the Catalog for your jpeg images the embedded metadata will be read and put into the program's database bringing them into sync. This will also clear the obsolete information you don't want to see. Unless that info is also embedded.
From now on, when you make any metadata changes that you want other programs to see, you'll have to use the Embed Metadata Command. I've assigned my own hotkey for it I use it so much. Since the program doesn't have a Save command I use Command (or Control) S. 😀
Today's 2021.5 update includes the ability to set your own hotkeys.

Also, Photo RAW does have some non-standard metadata settings that no other program will ever see. I think the Favorite (heart) setting is unique to the program.
The User Guide talks about the Metadata Pane starting on page 50. Page 59 says, "Both star ratings and color labels are industry standards. When you use these tools, the settings are stored in the metadata and will be available in other photo editors and managers, like Lightroom. (Likes are proprietary and will only appear in ON1 Photo RAW 2021.)"
Just to reiterate, without the use of sidecar files you will have to embed your metadata changes for other programs to be able to see them.

Thanks for the explanations! So except for resetting my whole database, there is no way to do this. I was afraid so...
On1 would need a manual option to read already embedded metadata...
I have given up on On1 for editing my RAW photos, because it is simply too unstable and processing intensive. In only use it for managing my finished Jpegs, adding a final Effect here and there and exporting downsized Jpegs.
I'll try deleting the Final Jpeg Folder and adding it to the catalogue again, maybe that will update the ratings...0 -
Resetting the database isn't too bad. I had to do last night myself. I left it run over night and it's all done rebuilding my 3 catalogs.
You don't need to delete the folder itself, just the Catalog. When you recreate it the programm should reread all of the embedded metadata. I would use the Windows Explorer to remove any .on1 or .xmp sidecars just to be sure.
- Delete Catalog
- Quit program
- Clean jpegs folder of unwanted sidecars
- Restart program and recreate the Catalog.

Thank you! I will try it this way.
