I have not yet recieved any emails from Suport re-the need for DNG files.

Is the NoNoise challenge really restricted to just DNG files?  As I would have thought that ON1 might want to test against a wide range of camera raw files/formats.

Brian - thanks for the info.

David - Here is a link to the request.  https://www.on1.com/products/nonoise-ai/nonoise-challenge

Interestingly, the Adobe converter converted my 24MB Sony Raw files into 35MB DNG files. After zipping, one is 25MB and the other is 36MB.  The larger one exceeds their 32MB file upload size limit, so I can't submit it.  From what I've read about the DNG conversion, the files were normally expected to be about 20% smaller, but that didn't happen with these files.

David, the page Carl link to specifies that dng files be submitted.

When you do the conversion be sure to check the preferences and turn off the option to embed the original raw file with the dng. Otherwise the file is very large.

    Thanks Brian.

I did not have the embed option turned on.  I disabled the JPEG RAW Preview and the Embed Fast Load Data to see how that would effect the DNG size.  I reduced them by about 3MB, but they are still ~40% larger than the original RAW files.

    Richard,

As new cameras come out, it takes them time to get support into the product.  They are probably trying to avoid dealing with formats that they can't yet process.

Avoiding formats they don't yet support was my thought too. Owners of those cameras can still take part.

    Hi Brian

photo Raw supports a wide range of cameras. They even added the Sony A1 and Fuji’s new medium format camera in the last updates.

All of my cameras are supported by PR2021, so … Question is it OK for me to carry on submitting raw files in their native formats?

If not, then even though I like to be helpful, I am reluctant to install any more of Adobe’s programs.

    Best wishes David Price

It's up to you David but they do specifically request dng files.

The DNG Converter does not come with all the internet connectivity overhead that the rest of Adobe's products contain. It doesn't even update itself. I have to go to Adobe's site to find out if there is an update for it. It has a very light footprint on your system.

    Hi Brian

I don’t have many noisy images, because there is no point in using ISO -1600 and above, so I mostly use low ISOs.

However I have submitted some, but they are not DNGs.

    Never mind !

On a positive note if NoNoise works as well as we are all hoping that it will then I could well have lots of noisy cleaned images in the future.

Had the same problem using Adobe dng converter. Even with everything turned off files were too large. Gave up in the end, ON1 are being far too picky. Doesn't bode well for the finished product if the test files are cherry-picked without consideration for what is actually out there. Don't understand anyway why they would use a file format they don't actually have a conversion template for.

It looks like they've removed the dng requirement but the 32MB limit is still there.

Also, I wouldn't assume they are cherry picking photos. Limited data used to train the AI means limited results from the AI. I'm guessing the 32MB limit has more to do with the zendesk system they use.

You're right Brian, it does look like they've removed the DNG requirement.

With so many cameras now taking 40MB+ images, the 32MB limit is going to be a general problem for many  users soon.  File sharing sites are a workaround, but it's not as convenient as adding a file to a support ticket.

(When I couldn't upload my oversized DNG, support suggested that I crop the image using Resize before zipping it. I assumed that was not going to create a RAW file, and was not a viable solution for this request.)
