Local adjustment masks out of alignment.

Revisiting an image after a couple of years.  There were eight or so very carefully placed local adjustment masks to place emphasis upon or shift attention from several objects within the frame.   All of these masks are now out of alignment with the original image layer.  The shift is predominantly vertical.  There is only one image layer.  How can an adjustment mask be returned to its original position?  The transform tool tends to move the base layer, not the adjustment, even when the mask has been selected.
