ON1 NoNoise not usable
AnsweredI just downloaded and installed ON1 NoNoise on my Mac mini (late 2018 3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5 with 16 GB of RAM). Upon opening a file, NoNoise darkens the photo by several f-stops. After saving or exporting the software crashes. This has happened three times. I am going to uninstall the software, reboot my Mac and try again. The software is not usable in its current form. I am very disappointed.

Hi Daniel, I've been using NoNoise AI on my M1 Mac Mini for over a week now and I am not seeing the problems you are describing. If you'd like to share one of your images I'll be glad to take a look at what happens here.
How are you using the program, as a stand-alone app, or as a plug-in to some other software? Are you processing a RAW file or an image file? The program uses different AI processing engines for RAW vs image files.

I tried converting NEF files to DNG and NoNoise had no problems processing DNG files. Some NEF files seemed to work after I tried DNG files but other NEF files did not work and resulted in the software crashing. I believe that the NEF processing problem is the key issue that needs to be resolved.

Same issue here. I am using the trial version of ON1 NoNoise AI (Nikon NEF Raw files).

- Once again, how are you using the program, as a stand-alone app or are you using it as a plug-in with other software?
- How did you do the conversion from NEF to DNG?
- Where are your NEF files coming from? If you will post a link for me to download one I'll be glad to give it a try on my system.
I just used Photo RAW's Send To… command to send an NEF file to NoNoise AI and it opened with out any problems. I accepted the default settings and clicked the Done button, chose to save as a DNG file which Photo RAW saw immediately.

Daniel, in Photo RAW you are looking at a rendered version of the photo with the Camera Profile (a LUT) already applied even before you do any processing. What you see in NoNoise AI is the completely unprocessed RAW file. How does it look in Photo RAW after you send it back from NoNoise?

I sent an email with the original and processed photos along with a detailed explanation. My results look like the photos posted by Daniel PIGEON above. There is clearly an issue with how NoNoise handles NEF files.

I am using NoNoise as a stand-alone application.
I use Adobe DNG Converter to convert NEF files to DNG files.I tried the Send To… command from ON1 Photo RAW. When I sent the original NEF file NoNoise I had exactly the same problem with the image darkening. If I used the Send To… command to send a copy (one of the options) it sends a PSD file. NoNoise opens the PSD file but shows a warning about PSD not being a RAW file.I need to be able to process NEF files directly in NoNoise for the application to be useful for me. Right now, it can be used but it is not working as it should. I hope this gets fixed soon.0 -
I do not work for ON1 so I won't see those files you sent. I am not seeing this issue in my testing with NEF files which is why I asked if I could see one of yours. They're all NEF files but different cameras write different NEFs so there could be something in your files that I don't see in mine. I'm a Canon user so I only have a few NEF files to play with.

I didn't realize you didn't work for ON1. I will send a technical problem report via the link you provided above. I have spent way too much time working on this today. I hope someone from ON1 reads this stuff so they are aware of the problem. Sorry about pestering you. It wasn't intentional.

It's no problem Daniel. These forums are meant for users to help other users. While the company does monitor them it is mostly about decorum more than anything else. They rarely reply and support does not read them unless you send a link to an appropriate thread when you contact them.
I'm a beta tester for the company so I would still be interested in seeing one of your files if you're willing to drop on in Dropbox for me. 😀

In the Nikon D810 Menu Shooting, it is possible to set the "Bit Depth" to 12 or 14 bit ... The problem occurs if the photos were taken in 12bit, everything is fine in 14 bit. I do not know if it can help.

Thanks for the files Daniel P. I am seeing the darkening on the 12-bit files and I've seen it on some of my own but hadn't tied it to the bit depth, just different cameras which is probably the same thing; I'll have to check. I have reported it to support and sent them files as well. I've found it only take about a half stop increase in the Exposure slider to compensate.
I am not having problems with it crashing though. I've sent both files individually from Photo RAW and I've run NoNoise stand-alone using its Open command and dragging and dropping both individual files and a folder with both for batch processing. I've used both the Done button and the Export panel. I have seen it crash during testing but overall I've found it to be pretty stable.
You can delete your settings and reset the program just as in Photo RAW by pressing a Shift key during startup. I'd try deleting your settings. Since you've been crashing there's a good chance they have become corrupt.
The darkening thing is definitely something we need to hear from support on.

I did some testing and found the root cause of the problem. NoNoise has no issues with NEF files from my Nikon D7500. There is no darkening of the original for both 12-bit and 14-bit files. However, NoNoise is darkening NEF files from my Nikon Z5 by about one f-stop. I only tested 14-bit files as this is the default on that camera. The test pictures were done in indoor natural lighting with ISO 400. One sample of original and processed photos are shown below. There may be more impact for night photos with higher ISO's. I will test that tonight.

NoNoise processed photo (exported as JPEG)

Daniel C, thanks for that. Please be sure to update your support ticket with this information. You can click on your avatar above and choose the See my requests command to get a list of everything you've ever reported and add to them.

I received an email regarding my support ticket last night. I replied to that email with the same information posted above and it has already been added to my request. At least I know what the problem is and the needed work arounds until it is fixed.

Tech support found and fixed the problem. In the files tab in preferences, the selection " Disable Base Corrections on RAW Photos" is checked on by default. Uncheck this box and the NEF files open correctly. Not exactly intuitive but it works. Kudos to the tech support team and their amazingly quick fix for this problem. I do a lot of low light photography so I will be using NoNoise a lot. Thanks again.

Thanks for the update Daniel. I do have that turned off on my system.

HI guys,
Has the new update fixed this for you? In my limited testing so far it has fixed the problem of the returned .dng being darker than the original.

I haven't had any issues since I unchecked "Disable Base Corrections on Raw Photos". I installed the update and tested it. I still need to leave "Disable Base Corrections on Raw Photos" unchecked to prevent darkening of raw NEF files. I'm fine using NoNoise in this configuration. It works for me.
