Can you post us a screenshot showing the problem? I'd like to see the entire screen please.

It sounds as though you are masking the Layer (there's always 1 😉) which allows the canvas to be seen as that checkerboard pattern.

This is after me trying to reset all edits and editing straight from Develop

Yes, that is exactly what is happening. You are applying the mask to the _DSC1869.NEF Layer. Notice you selected the mask preview above the Develop/Effects/Portrait/Local Adjustments tabs. You need to be working with either a Local Adjustment or some Effect you've applied. If you want to apply some tonal adjustments with a gradient I suggest adding a Local Adjustment and applying the gradient to it.

Go ahead and submit the crash report but I think it is one of those one-off kind of deals that won't easily be reproduced. All the same, it can't be fixed if it isn't reported. 😁

Ah, basic user error... Thanks for putting me right :)
You could however argue that I shouldn't be able to select a mask in Edit without a local adjustment/effect being present...

Then you wouldn't be able to mask between different layers. The program has no way to know what you meant to do vs what you actually did. It doesn't make logical sense but a new Layer could be added after the mask had been applied to the 1st Layer.
