Unable to open jpg in edit
I am doing the ON1 "All About Blending" course and when it came to editing a jpg image I was unable to open it. I tried restarting my computer (MacBook Pro) and I was still having a problem. I can open the image in preview on the computer, but will not open in ON1. I have had this problem with other jpg's and can only edit if it is in my Photos folder and use ON1 as a plug-in. What can I do to get the jpg to open in ON1

- What exactly is happening when the program isn't "opening" the jpeg?
- Can you see it in the Browser?
- Is it a color or grayscale image? If it is grayscale it will need to be converted to an RGB colorspace before Photo RAW can work with it.

I can see the image in Browser and when I click on edit, the image disappears and grayscale with a gray image of a face with a line through it appears. Were do I go to convert to RGB colorspace in ON1

It cannot be done inside of Photo RAW. I wrote an AppleScript that does it for me. Download the script and drop it into your ~/Library/Services folder. To use it Right-click on the photo you want converted, go to the Services sub-menu and choose Apply Adobe RGB Profile.

I put the two downloaded items in the library file (Services) and when I right clicked the jpg I click on apply adobe RGB. When I got into ON1 and brought up the image and put in edit, it failed. What else to you suggest??

Apparently Dropbox disassembled the script package into its individual components. Let's try it this way. You'll have to unzip it before installing it. Be sure to remove the 2 items you previously installed.
Sorry for the confusion.

Brian....I tried again and it stilled fail to open in edit. When I open edit, the image is there for about 1 second and the grayscale card comes up. I don't think the RGB script is the answer. When I am in Apple Photos and I put the image in the edit mode and open ON1 it will be transported to ON1 edit. But if I have a folder on my desktop (practice files) it won't open....even if I try the Adope RGB profile.

I use that script all the time. It absolutely is the answer. Show me a screen shot of your Scripts folder please. There is still something going on with that. It should look like this:
If you'd like to create your own, here is how to set it up in Automator. You may have to give Automator some Security Permissions, you'll be prompted if necessary. I saved it as a Quick Action.
EDIT: I had the wrong action selected previously. This is the right one. when you create your own, just drag it into the panel on the right, then configure the settings as shown.
This does alter the original file so work with a copy if you're unsure or just want to be safe until you're comfortable using it on live files.

I have a question for you before I get into working with the adobe RGB profile......If I export a image from ON1 using Adobe RGB (1998) from the export area to my desktop, should that image be able to open in edit because it has the Adobe RGB profile? I closed ON1 and than reopened it and had the Adobe RGB on my desk top and when I saw the image in browser, I tried to open in edit and failed. This was the image that I created via ON1 using the Adobe RGB in export. One other factor, I don't use lightroom or photoshop.

Using Photoshop of Lightroom doesn't matter. I don't have either of them on my system too.
Yes, any image that you export from Photo RAW you should be able to view and edit in it as well. Photo RAW doesn't have the ability to export an image in the grayscale colorspace since it doesn't support it.
There has to be something else going on that has corrupted the file on your Desktop or possibly its sidecar file.
At this point I'm going to recommend you reset the program. Try the Delete Settings option first and if that doesn't fix the problem try the Reset option. Neither of these will affect your photos. Delete Settings only resets your preferences and the program's state files. The Reset button will wipe your Catalogs and Albums but not your edits. Delete Settings File

Is there an update to this? This is a really awful bug for anyone with a library that includes multiple image types including jpegs. I get the face with a line through it for every single jpeg old or new. Even after following the Delete Settings File. Using OS X 10.15.7. Version 2020.6
ON1 is basically unusable for JPEG files
Was assuming basic JPEG support expecting too much?

Photo RAW works just fine with jpegs. The problem isn’t the program itself, it is either with the files you are working with, or it is a problem with your installation of the program.
Can you post one of the problem files for me to download and take a look at?
Did you try the Reset ON1 Photo RAW option yet?

I found the solution from another user in a different thread. Many thanks to MRF. This should probably be part of the trouble shooting stratagems.
"But, reading through your suggested resolution, I did go take a deep dive into the Security and Privacy Section of System Preferences in Catalina. I discovered that On1 RAW 2020 had all the appropriate security permissions EXCEPT one - the box for "Removable Drives" was UNCHECKED. Networked drives were fine, system drive was fine, desktop fine. So, with some effort, I was able to check the box for removable drives, and everything seems to work fine now. For those facing similar problems, the box checking turned out to be a bit more cumbersome than I expected. Simply unlocking the lock, finding Files and Folders and then finding ON1 RAW 2020 and checking the box would have been too easy. Instead, not only do you have to do that, but you have to pretend you are ADDING a file to the list. Press the + at the bottom of the file list, and then you have to click the mouse a few times while hovering over the unchecked box. I thought it might have been a machine issue, but managed to have the same problem on a new laptop I purchased with Catalina preinstalled. Same issue. So, I'm not sure that this isn't an ON1 problem, but at the same time, I'm also not sure it isn't an Apple problem. But it looks like you and Apple have something to sort out.

We would have gotten there. 😎 System permissions are not the 1st thing I jump to with a problem description like this. You failed to mention that the files were on an external drive and I don't make assumptions. I start with the basics and proceed to the more esoteric possibilities later.
Also, those permissions should have been set either when the program was installed or you should have been prompted to give the program those permissions the first time you told the program to access that drive. That is built into the Mac OS.
One more thing you should know is that you are not talking to the company on these forums. We're just other users like yourself who want to help.
I'm glad you were able to find the solution and thanks for posting it for others to read.
