Why sidecar after export?

Your edits are baked into the exported file. I have never had a sidecar file created for an exported JPG. The only way ( that I know of ) for a side car file to be created for the exported file would be if you brought that file back into Edit again. Would it be possible for you to post a screen shot of the directory where you are seeing this?

I get a sidecar some of the time, other times I don't. The sidecar files hold more than just the editing info. Metadata gets saved there as well.

Odd - I wonder what the trigger is? I have never had one created on export.

I've never bothered to figure it out. One thing I do know that triggers the creation of one is renaming the exported file.

I export my photos to the same folder as the original so I can more easily compare them before I decide to publish it. Once I've got what I want to use I move them to a folder named Export so they are easily found when I do the posting, it's at the top of my Pictures folder so I don't have to dig through the whole file structure to get to it. I'd guess about ¼ of them wind up with a sidecar even if I don't rename the file.

I don't see any mention of where the Export is being saved to. If it's going into a cataloged folder, then I'd expect On1 to see it eventually and make a sidecar when it's cataloged.

That being said, I've seen sidecars appear beside some of my exported photos even though they are not in a cataloged folder. They aren't created when the export is, they just show up sometime at a later date and it's usually 2 or 3 sidecars at a time that are created.

Hi, all. Thanks for the input so far. I save to the same folder that contained the original image -- not catalogued and with the same name for the JPG as the edited, non-exported image. It hasn't happened consistently although I'm paying closer attention now and will do some test stuff. I do sometimes have PS in the workflow.

Is it possible that On1 creates a sidecar if you simply open the JPG export w/o making any changes? Heisenberg uncertainty principle here we come.

Yes, opening it in the Editor will definitely cause one to be created unless you click the Cancel button to return to the Browser.

I just discovered one way the .on1 sidecar can be created for exported jpegs. This is what I wrote in response to another thread about this.

By default Photo RAW does not create the sidecar when the Export is performed. I exported a jpeg at midnight last night and there is no sidecar file to go with it. The sidecar gets created at some later time. I have seen them in my Exports folder too. Only after they've sat there for a while. I'm not sure what triggers its creation.

Ah ha! I just got it to create one. All I did is click in one of the Metadata fields. I did not make any changes of any kind. I clicked in a field then pressed the Tab key. That wasn't enough to create the file though. It was when I returned to the Grid view and changed the file selection that the sidecar was created.

I followed that until the last line. What do you mean 'changed the file selection' ?

I changed which file I had selected in the Browser.

I still have no clue how this will work without those files being exported too.

Did anyone already filed a bugreport at on1?

The .on1 sidecar files are not being exported and there isn't any bug to report. When I clicked in one of the Metadata fields the program took that to mean a change had been made and metadata changes are saved in the sidecars so a new .on1 file was created.

I´m not able to find any way to export an edited image WITHOUT these files being exported too. It makes no sens to me as I do not have any metadata-attributes enabled forexporting. I tried removing metadata and I also tried disabling the option for exporting metadata...

What am I - and oviously several others - doing wrong? And dont you agree that this is somehow counterintuitive?

    Something is totally weird here.

I was finally able to duplicate the problem. It only happens for me when I use that Desktop Preset. No matter which file format I pick, how the Create ON1 Sidecar option is set (I even turned it Off before choosing jpeg file type), or any other setting I changed, that particular preset does create the sidecar file.

I went to my default Preset for exporting to Facebook and it never created a sidecar. Again, I exported to different locations, toggled the option to Show in Finder/Explorer, all the same options I tried with the Desktop Preset and saw no sidecars.

I don't know if this is a bug or by design, you'll have to ask support.

Try creating your own Preset with the same settings you are using now only start from scratch. Turn off the Desktop Preset button first.

    Nice.

I´ve copied a template and then reseted every setting. Now it is working as intended. :-)
    Thank you.
