video card question
Hi,
seems my older Dell decided that On1 2022 was just too much for it (L4, Lr and Ps all gave it fits, but it could at least get through an edit lol) and I need to upgrade the Video Card.
yes/no?
Im looking at the NVIDIA® GeForce GT 710 -
Video Memory 2GB GDDR5
Engine Clock 954 MHz
CUDA Core 192
Memory Speed 5012 MHz
Memory Interface 64-bit
thanks!

if it matters I use a Asus ProArt PA248Q

More video memory and faster clock speeds always help if you can afford/buy it

What's your current video card? I think you might be disappointed with the GT-710. The 710 was released in Jan of 2016 and is pretty old technology. I know graphics cards are crazy expensive right now but you might look for something a bit better though. Something with at least 4GB of Ram.

I honestly don't know if my system can handle a 4gb video card, reading the Dell forums seems to indicate that size (needs to be low profile) and energy draw are issues on the older motherboard in my system.

Ahh the joys of trying to upgrade a Dell.

I have a discreet Nvidia 960 and Sky Module does not work. It also does not work with AMD RENOIR with AMD 4700 APU on ACER laptop. So that is extremely disappointing especially with the current state of discreet GPU cards these days. I opened ticket with support and they said it is a known bug and do not have an ETA for fix at the moment.

Yeah my laptop which handled L4 and Lr without any real issue can't do anything with On1 which is a real issue due to my using the laptop when I travel.
I just ordered a gt 1030 2gb card, it should be good for On1 but if it isn't, then I guess I will be returning the product... My system is stronger than the "minimum" requirements and it vexes me that On1 clearly didn't get the "minimum" portion right

Yep in both cases my systems show OpenGL 4.x+, DirectX 12.1, 11.4 support, Vulkan 1.2.182. Certainly not top of the line systems but work with Photoshop, LR Classic, On1 PR 2021, Luminar 4, Luminar AI, and Topaz products. I certainly did not think both systems would not work with On1 PR 2022. Acer Laptop is not a gaming laptop but it is less than a year old with decent specs.

The single most disappointing thing about Photo Raw is it (still) runs a bit like a crippled pig in Windows. I don't have a Mac, so I don't know how much better they may be. But I'm on Windows 10 and also a gamer with an nVidia 2060RTX and with a few masks and a few layers, it borders on unusable. So I'm not sure you're spending your money to much purpose. :(
I love this program, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to another Windows user. My workflow, to make it bearable, used to be ON1 for raw development, send to Affinity, then use ON1 Effects as a plug in so the program started as new.
I was so hoping I wouldn't have to still do that. And for reasonably simple edits I don't. But if you want much masking, it gets essentially impossible. And my PC is a 2yr old i5 with 32gb RAM. No other software is so painful to run.
There. I finally admitted it to myself.

I'm running it on a 16GB Mac mini M1. Last night I was working on a 12 image (50MB each) panorama that was stitched into a 1.18GB .onphoto pano. I had no problems with it. I have my photos on an external SSD and the program's Scratch space and PerfectBrowseCache on a 2nd external SSD dedicated to just that use — scratch space for the programs that let me move it. On the flip side of the coin Hudson Henry recently switched from a Mac Pro to a Window system. He has a YouTube video explaining why.
I assume you've configured your video card drivers and OS performance settings so Photo RAW can take full advantage of your hardware? There are other threads here that discuss this in more detail and have screenshots of the poster's configuration.
I highly recommend adding an SSD for the Scratch space. You'll see a noticeable improvement in the program's performance. Search the forums for several discussions on why this works.

I have a windows desktop and a windows laptop and On1 has no issues on either machine. It is not the OS ( if you read trough this forum you will see Mac users say it must run better on Windows ) it's something with your system setup. As Brian indicates make sure your video card drivers are configured correctly and a separate drive to hold your scratch space if you can.

Windows 10, 32 gig fast ram, 5Ghz i78086K 3090 graphics card and it runs fine. Yes it is a beast of a gaming machine :)

I should also add make sure you have disabled anything in Startup that isn't absolutely necessary. OEMs are notorious for loading up machines with bloatware that runs in the background that can cripple a computers performance.

I ought to add that ON1 runs absolutely fine until I start using a lot of masks. Browsing, opening etc are all ok, as are as many Effects as I want until there are lots of masks. Things then really choke up when I'm using Local Adjustments. I sometimes grumble that no other photo editing app messes with my machine like Photo Raw but, on reflection, it's the brilliant masking options that makes me love it so much - and hence no other app perhaps gets the same kind of strain on it!
Brian Lawson I will investigate your post in some depth tomorrow. There are some Windows settings there I'm surprised to find I know nothing about, and I'll certainly play with them. I did set up a scratch drive on another M2 (I have 2, and they're both pretty fast) but I reset everything essentially back to Default because of the masking problem. Now I know that's made no difference, it's probably time to start fiddling again! Thank you.

I should add (in case there's something blindingly obvious I'm missing) what happens, what really slows down, is when I'm trying to mask. I move the cursor and the brush is whole seconds behind. Nothing happens, and then it jerks across the screen. My masking ends up like a 4yr old's painting in kindergarten and precision (actually, even approximation) becomes impossible.

That's a combination of Scratch drive being on a shared drive, the power of your GPU, the Windows settings, and the settings in Photo RAW's Preferences > System > Performance panel.

Caroline, some other performance tips that you may already be aware of -- make sure to keep the presets panel on the left closed while editing unless you are actually adding a preset. You can also try turning off some of the filters you have added if you don't need to see their effect while doing a local adjustment.

My elderly HP laptop does not actually have a graphics card. It relies completely on the integrated graphics in the CPU. (Effectively the GPU cores in my laptop's CPU are borrowing up to 7 GB from the system RAM).
I have no doubt that my laptop would perform better if I had a separate GPU, but Sky Swap works on my laptop, even though it does not meet ON1's minimum specification.
(ON1 Support have advised that I really should look for a more powerful machine, and I can see their point).
I have upgraded my lap top such that it has an SSD, and I maxed out the RAM.
However, as I know that I am pushing the envelope with my laptop, I routinely return to Browse whilst editing, as this updates the ON1 file and effectively saves progress. So, if I do push things over the edge, and crash my laptop. I have only lost a small amount of work.

Excellent advice. I too make a habit of returning to the Browser every so often to ensure my work to that point gets saved. I make it a point to do this whenever I've done lots of brushing to create a mask, even before making the slider adjustments it was meant for; get the mask saved first just in case. I also do it when I've finished editing whatever section of the photo I'm currently working on.

I've changed the scratch drive to another disk and messed around with video settings. It's considerably better but still really needs any Effects with masks to be turned off if I'm using local adjustments for reliable smoothness. So it is better, definitely.
The masking brush still disappear intermittently, as do the crop handles. However, I'm seeing increasing numbers of people also reporting the same problem - it's always nice not to be alone! I have a case open with support and they want me to do a screen video - always an interesting challenge with an intermittent fault. ;)

Oh, how rude of me! (Distracted today). Sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who spent some of their own precious time helping me out on this. I never take this for granted and I am genuinely grateful. x
