Surely you should not have to go through all of what support have told me to do just to make it run.

Yes, you need to do that because it runs fine for most people and your situation is an anomaly.

I'm not sure if you're trying to run 2021 or 2022.

If you've already talked to tech support then you'll probably have to start from scratch which means completely removing both 2021 and 2022. Cleaning your registry and re-installing the version that you want.

Support probably already mentioned this, but make sure your GPU is set up properly per this article...

    Steven,

That sounds a bit like the issue I had with On1 Photo Raw.  I contacted tech support, upload the log files and preferences that they requested and unforteately was told my hardware/drivers were too old.

In my case I'm quite sure that the issue is my FirePro V4900 graphics card with hasn't had a driver update since 2017.  The solution I found was to roll back to the original version of On1 Photo Raw 2021 before any updates.  That version works Ok, a bit slow loading but  otherwise it works,  If I install any of the updates, it will no longer open or will crash if it does..

On1 will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe It must be able to use the GPU to function properly.  Looking at LR properties, which by the way works fine, I see that use GPU is greyed out. There is a link to the minimum required  specs to use the GPU.  It says: Your graphics processor must meet the minimum system requirements (see below) to be used by Lightroom Classic. We also recommend choosing a graphics card with a GPU Compute benchmark score of 2000 or greater.

Well as it is even newer AMA FirePro cards come close to a score of 2000.

Of course I don't know what your PC build is, but the problem could be similar to mine.  Something in the code of newer versions of On1 Photo Raw 2021 seems to not run if the GPU won't support it.

In the case of my current AMD driver for the FirePro V49000 there is nothing in the AMD software that allows me to set it default to the GPU with On1 Photo Raw

I have carried out everything that has been requested and the same problem applies to both 2021 and 2022 versions of ON1. I have cleaned the hard drive and registry as requested to get rid of any files that may be hanging around and still nothing. My graphics hardware runs all other programs ok including Photoshop CS6, Adobe Lightroom, Topaz and Affinity. It is just ON1 that will not work. I am just glad that I have not paid for the 2022 upgrade as it seems that I will have to stick with what I have.

You haven't told us what video card you have in your system. Which one is it and what are its specs?

The other software you mention does not make use of the GPU in the same way Photo RAW does. Making those kinds of comparisons isn't valid because of those differences.

The uninstall script does not remove all the pieces of the software. I have a procedure which does if you want to give that another try so you can reinstall it as if it was the first time it had ever been installed.

    Steven,

As I mentioned, Lightroom and PS were also working on my setup because they will run without using the GPU for photo editing.  And you can see that, for example in your Lightroom Preferences.  In my case "use the GPU" was grayed out because my graphics card was not up to snuff (GPU Compute Benchmark score of 2000 or greater).  Plus my driver has not been updated by AMD since 2017.

I'm currently using my Mac Book Pro (from 2019) with Intel I5 chip and onboard graphics, and it works great.  I will be replacing my Windows 10 desktop PC with a Mac Mini M1.  I'm fed up with the constant issues with Windows and driver problems.  It has been a money and time sucking black hole that I don't want to deal with anymore.  Too much brain damage!  :-).  A graphics cards for Windows PCs that have the right specs are just too expensive and who knows if it is going operate correctly with the next update of Windows?

Kelly if you are talking about Windows 11 when you say "who knows if it is going operate correctly with the next update of Windows?"  -- On1 2022 runs very well on my two Windows 11 machines.

    David,

That is good to hear.  I'm sure you have superior hardware to what I have.  What graphics card are you using? That might be helpful to others running On1 Photo Raw 2022 on Windows 10 and 11

I've build a number of Windows PCs going way back and I've spend a lot of money on hardware that quickly became obsolete because they were not compatible with the latest software or Windows update.  So that is was I was referring to, not necessarily Windows 11 specifically.  This may be largely because the vast variety of hardware available for Windows  is logisically and economically very difficult to support  indefinitely.  So often you buy that expensive piece of hardware only to have it deemed "legacy" and that usually means the end of updated drivers.

Of course this sort of thing happens with Mac too.  But the life time of hardware and support is, from my experience much longer. Apple has total control over the hardware so they don't have to deal with the hardware issues that  Microsoft has to deal with. But on the other hand Macs can be expensive.

What I should mention is that ON1 2021 was running ok and then for some reason just one day decided to stop loading so I don't think the graphics is the issue. Also I run some of the Topaz AI programs with no issues and they tend to hammer the graphics. I am a photographer and know how to take photos and process them in the software but I am not a person that knows an awful lot about other stuff which it seems you need to be nowadays. I mean I can drive a car but does that mean I need to be a mechanic as well.

If the program worked one day then stopped the next, something changed on your system. Have you ensured the you are running the correct drivers for your graphics card? Windows updates are known to roll them back to earlier versions which can break things. Rick Sammartino provided a link to a Knowledge Base article that explains how to check them and configure both the drivers and the OS graphics settings so Photo RAW can make maximum use from them. Have you gone through that yet?

Kelly, I have built a few PC's over the years as well. my graphics card is a RTX 2060. I decided to move it to a new build early this year.

    My current system:

    CPU: Intel I5-11600K CPU @ 3.7 GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z590 AORUS Elite AX - WiFi
RAM: 32 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM
    3000MHz running at 3200 Mhz
    GPU: GeForce RTX 2060 - 6GB RAM
    Latest Studio Driver

OS: Windows 11 Pro 64 bit Ver 2004 Build 19043.1055

    Drive Configuration:
OS and On1 on Primary internal Nvme drive
ON1 Scratch and browse folders on 2nd internal SSD
Photos stored and edited on 3rd internal SSD

Thanks everyone for your advice and comments. I uninstalled all versions of ON1 and then ran CClean. I then rebooted the computer and then downloaded and installed the software with my firewall and virus software disabled. Lo and behold it starts up again in all versions and I have opened a few images and it is editing. I am sure for all you experts out there you may have an idea why this worked. I actually have no idea how it worked and I was making it up as I went along but working it is so thanks again and fingers crossed eh. I am glad as this is good software for reasonable cost by comparison to others.

    David,

Wow, that is a great build, you should be editing photos on that system well into the future!

Hard to believe that it has already been going on 10 years since I put this AMD based computer together.  Seems like just yesterday!  Looking at the cost of a good graphics card like the TRX 2060 and the age of my PC is my reason to move on from Windows to Mac.  I did enjoy the process of choosing components, assembling and setting up PC's but I don't want to spend the time doing that anymore -- nor the money.

I agree with Brian's advice to Steven.  It's likely a driver issue and it could have been caused by a Windows Update. It seems problems like that often are caused by driver issues.  As I've said a few times now, for me on my Windows 10 computer, the issue with On1 PR 2021 started with the first update to PR2021.  The initial build works fine.

    Steven,

Congratulations.  That's good news!  I use CCleaner as well and it can solve problems like that  In fact when I was having trouble with my copy of On1 PR 2021, I used CCleaner to uninstall PR.  Firewall and virus software can cause issues when installing.  I use Malwarebytes and it has cause some strange problems for me in the past with other software and hardware installs. You can use CCleaner to turn off all apps and processes that run at startup,  install your software, and then turn it all back on with CCleaner.

Another tip if you have Windows 10 Pro is to set a restore point before you make an install.  That way if there are issues, crashing etc with the software, you can roll everything back to the point before you made the install.

Happy editing in On1 PR!  I've gradually migrated from mostly using LR to Using PR for most all of my editing.

Kelly, "  It's likely a driver issue and it could have been caused by a Windows Update. It seems problems like that often are caused by driver issues. "  This is the reason I recommend a clean install of Windows and updated drivers about once a year.

I am sorry to come to this thread late, but on occasions I have found that ON1 2021 would not open after closing. By going into Task Manager, I am on Windows 10, I found that either or both ON1 and ON1 Sandbox was still running after closing them ON1 would open.

It seems that ON1 sometime does not close down completely after installing 2022 I have not had this problem “touch wood”

Thanks for all of the tips to look out for if this happens again. As I say if the software works I can find out how to use it but when it goes wrong I am not great with it so it is nice to know that there is an ON1 community out there willing to offer advice. For now all is good so thanks again everyone.
