Windows 11 and 2022 performance
Since moving to W11 a week or so ago my impression is that ON1 PR 20202 (latest build) has slowed down in two areas 1) on start up. It can take up to around 40secs before anything happens and 2) when I use the browse to look at nested folders after moving to another set there is a long delay of several secs before it will display thumbnails again. I have tried catalogues but its better but there is still a delay. I have about 100K images a mix of mostly RAW as well as jpegs. I have reinstalled ON1 twice recently when updating the GPU f/w to see if it makes any difference. I have a 10th gen i5 with 32GB RAM and Samsung SSD's throughout with a dedicated SSD for the browse caches. USing a Gigabyte Vision G mobo. My graphics card is a RTX2070 with 8GB VRAM and with latest Studio f/w from Nvidia. I also have Lightrroom 6 which tON1 replaced when I started with ON1 2020 and it takes just a few secs to display the file /folder trees on start up. I love what ON1 can ?do as an editor but surely I can expect quicker and faster response times. PS I have set teh preferebces to 80% fro system and VRAM memory and the GPU has been tried at 70 to 100%. I also force via W11 and Nvidia settings the GPU to be used on ON1. Am I missing something obvious or are my expectations to high. I should add that I also use Serif's Affinity as my Photoshop equivalent when ON1 doesnt do what I want and that is so fast and smooth! I really would welcome some suggestions.

Mike, My system is pretty similar to yours and I'm running Win11 and On1 2022, for me On1 fully opens in about 10 seconds and when I switch between folders it is fairly instantaneous. I do use catalogs.
One thing you might try is completely remove and reinstall your nVidia drivers.
On Youtube look for a video called "We have been installing nVidia drivers WRONG!" by Chris Titus Tech. He walks through the process and explains why.
My system:
CPU: Intel I5-11600K CPU @ 3.7 GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z590 AORUS Elite AX - WiFi
RAM: 32 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM
3000MHz running at 3200 Mhz
GPU: GeForce RTX 2060 - 6GB RAM
Latest Studio DriverOS: Windows 11 Pro 64 bit
Drive Configuration:
OS and On1 on Primary internal Nvme drive
ON1 Scratch and browse folders on 2nd internal SSD
Photos stored and edited on 3rd internal SSD1 -
Thanks David. Will look into reinstalling the GPU drivers. With my config it doesnt make sense the perforamnce I'm getting.

Mike, another thought. Since you have moved to Win 11 if you haven't already you might take a look at Intel Driver and Support Assistant ( just do a google search for it ). It scans your system and looks for any intel drivers ( chipset, storage etc .. ) that need to be updated and will download and install them for you.

Hi David, Intel Driver didnt pick up any new updates. Have stripped out most of the NVidia bloatware but yet to go through all the steps in the video re DDUinstaller and NVCleaninstall. But so far have got the start up down to around 14secs. Which is a significant improvement. Am tied up for next few days but am encouraged. Will persevere.
Thanks for your help.

David & Mike - Thank you tremendously for these tips. I just submitted a Help Request to Support and commented on line that mine is so slow i mise well as take up finger painting with oils outside in freezing weather it would be faster. Unfortunately, I am definitely a "user" vs techie knowledgeable. I am on Windows 10 Home for some time now with I core 9, fairly new Asus Rog PC, 16 GB Memory and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super 1 TB SSD. It has a 64 bit Operating System x64-based processor. ON1 2022 and site says that I am up to date with the Oct 11, 2021 [ 16.0.1.11212 ] version and Effects, Portrait, Resize, No Noise A1 and HDR all version [ 16.0.1.11291 ]. now what all that means - I do not know. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I did see something about the PC's "G" something and it's date or version. TKS

Merle, Since you are on Win 10 first I would start with the basics
1: I'm not sure how much bloatware is on a Asus ROG PC but I would check the startup folder and make sure there isn't a bunch of unneeded stuff running at startup.
2: If you can add a second SSD and move the ON1 scratch and browse folders there it will help a lot.
3: If you are building catalogs just let ON1 run for a while until it is complete. If you try using it while the catalog is being built it slows things down a lot.
4: Make sure you have updated graphics driver and then follow these two knowledge base articles to make sure your graphics card is being used full by Windows.
5: Edit your preferences and set you video card strength in the "Performance" section of the "System" tab. The image below is how I have mine set. BTW this is also where you set the drive for your Scratch and Browse folders.
Start with as many of these as you can and see where you end up regarding performance.

David, Thanks again for this guidance. I am working through some web data and my PC mfg. support site trying to find the version of the GPU - Open GL is. Some of my PC's specs that I found under the System are below FYI. But can I confirm that your data on the Preferences above are from w/i the ON1 software RT?? Just not sure what a "Scratch" folder is or its purpose nor finding my GL version. Contacting Asus Support hopefully. I do have the following:
- Asus ROG Laptop with an Intel i9 processor, CPU @ 2.4GHz, 3.10
- Ram of 16.0 GB
- System 64 Bit operating system, x64- based processor
- Windows 10 Pro version 20HZ
- NVIDIA GeForce RETX 2070 Super 1 TB ss
Think that I meet the minimum specs for ON1
TKS - Merle

The Scratch space is where Photo RAW does its work while you are editing. When you move to a new photo or return to the Browser the Scratch space gets written to the .on1 sidecar to save your edits. It sees a LOT of I/O while you are editing. Moving it to a drive that isn't being used by any other programs while you are editing gives it its own I/O channel to work with so it does not have to wait for I/O for other programs making use of the drive at the same time. That is where the increase in performance comes from.
By default it is on your C: boot drive where the operating system stores its own scratch files (the paging files needed for virtual memory).

Merle, your RTX 2070 supports Open GL 3.3 - no worries there. That said, since you are running a laptop it is critical that you follow the guidelines for setting up your Nvidia control panel and Windows graphics settings in the links in #4 of my comment above.

Even though I'm not experiencing any significant issues, it's always good to get rid of bloatware, so I followed the instructions to the letter with no issues.
As mentioned elsewhere, as this does a clean install you may need to go into the NVidia control panel to validate your settings and to verify that ON1 inter alia are listed as programmes using the GPU0 -
Having just got back from a few days holiday today, am catching up with the above comments (thanks to all) and sorting my backlog of pics taken whilst away. Having re-installed the GPU s/w, ON1 and set all preferences as suggested above I still am not seeing brilliant performance. I use all SSD's and have seperate 1TB SSD for use as the scratch pad and browse cache. I will persevere and go through everything again to see if I have missed anything.

I am working through these recommendations as well and will give it a test tomorrow. I have clean the startup etc. but could you describe or recommend an article on how you separated or "moved" your scratch pad and browse cache. Appreciate your use of some detailed "elementary" directions :) No techie here. Tks.

Merle, they are moved with Photo RAW's (and all other ON1 programs) by going to Preferences > System and clicking the respective Move buttons for the Scratch and PerfectBrowseCache.

As far as I can tell I have done all above recommendations mentioned previously and I am still experiencing slow startup. I can live with that for now. However, I also get regular pop up windows during editing which then freeze my system for 3 or 4 secs (seems longer) until they close, the two I regularly get are:
1) a 'saving settings' window, usually after several edits on different images.
2) a window opens saying 'progreess - searching'. But no indication what its searching for.
The actual editing process seems fine although changing from browse to edit mode and vice versa can take a sec or two. Its never intantaneous!
Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in anticipation.

Mike there is another option that I would strongly suggest but you might not like it.
I'm guessing when you moved to Win11 from 10 you just upgraded in place so you didn't have to reinstall anything. You should really consider a clean install of Win 11. I just did one a couple of days ago. Yeah it's a bit of a pain to do but you might be surprised at how it cleans things up.
One tip if you choose to do a clean install disconnect any drives other than your primary boot disk. Once you have windows up and running you can connect any other drives you might have. Windows can do some odd things on install if there are multiple drives running.

Thanks David. Its a bit of a nuclear option but you may be right and its probably worth trying if all else fails. I've done too many clean builds in the past so I know how long it takes me to get back to square one again But I'm still tinkering with the preference settings. Even before I upgraded to W11 the preformance wasnt amazing.

David Kick have taken your advice and done the 'nuclear' option and re-installed Windows 11 as a clean build. Took me all yesterday to reload all my apps and set up logins etc. etc. But it seems to have worked wonders. Startup is around 5 to 10secs instead of 40secs+ and no hanging, as yet , on browsing through folders. Will, be testing in anger tomorrow when I have some more time. Thanks for your advice.

Mike, glad it is working better for you now. I know the clean install option is a pain but it sure can work wonders with Windows OS performance. I think old junk drivers, registry keys etc.. build up and cause OS conflicts.

A clean install of the OS after years of upgrades is also good for Mac users for the same reasons. It gets rid of the unnecessary cruft that accumulates and slows down the system.

Have other experiences after windows 11 installs ?
Are these problems generally observed. Can I move from windows 10 to windows 11 whithout problems ?
Thank you...

Andre, PR 2022 runs very well on Windows 11.
If you have a laptop and you switch to windows 11 be sure to setup your graphics card as discussed in this thread Heads up for Windows 11 users – ON1 Support (zendesk.com)
You can simply upgrade Win 10 to 11 and will probably be OK but I would strongly recommend a clean install of Windows 11 and reinstall your programs. If you read through this ( current ) thread from the start you will see other settings suggestions.

I can only echo David K's advice and agree that taking the nuclear option of a clean re install of W11 is worth considering, but only if all else fails. It worked extremely well for my system but it was the last resort! This does raise the question of whether the problem is related to ON1, Windows or both and can it be fixed?

Thank you Mike.
For now I have no problem neither with windows 10 nor ON1 2002. I am just invided with windows to turn into the 11 version. I understand I must do this well, I need to reinstall the programs, and windows, and after look how is working the gpu card.
Probably, I'll wait a moment to see what is going on about this question. Thank you to all again.

I have seamlessly migrated two laptops from W10 to W11 without doing any re-installation. No problem at all.

Thank you Bernd, very interesting experience. I go on wtih my anlysis.

I was having major performance issues with ON1 2022 on my laptop as well. I have a Dell XPS 15", 32GB ram + the NVIDIA graphics and 2 SSD HD's. I had updated to Windows 11 a few months ago. After reading this discussion I finally decided to do the Windows reset and then the requisite program reinstall. That made a lot of difference and performance was much improved. I've made three other adjustments based on this and another thread here and that was to move the cache to the second SSD I had installed and to add an exclusion to the antivirus software for the Appdata\roaming\ON1 folder. The one other adjustment was to set the graphics options for ON1 to performance - the NVIDIA card instead of letting Windows decide.
I was about to give up using ON1 due to the performance issues, it's now quite usable, ALMOST snappy!

Thank You Michael for your experience shared here. I think I will, soon, turn into windows 11.
