Moving PerfectBrowseCache
I am trying to move the PBC to ext HDD as it was before 2022 crashed and erased my catalogued folders. But now I am getting an error message when attempting the move
"The selected location must have enough free space to move the cache."
I have tried this many times with a 1TB hdd and a 60GB memory stick. Both were reformatted beforehand. The current size of the PBC on the MacHD is a mere 4.8GB. There is no way I can move the PBC to an external hdd. Any clues?

The previous PerfectBrowseCache folder is probably still on the external drive. The program won't allow you to move it to a location that already contains one so you have to manually delete it from the external drive before using the Move button.

I outlined in my description that the ext hdds were reformatted...

Sorry Tony, I missed that. Go to Disk Utility and select the external SSD at its top level as shown below then take a screenshot and post it please.

Brian - there're ya go!

You've formatted it for Windows. Try reformatting it with APFS which is what MacOS wants SSDs to use. I expect the thumb drive is also ExFAT formatted.
While the MacOS can read and write them and I use them for sneaker netting files to Windows machine, for everyday use you want them to be APFS. You loose a lot of the speed advantage of an SSD when it is formatted in the older spinning disk file systems.

So, is ExFAT format no good for a Mac?
All my SSDs are ExFAT formatted, coming so from the store. I can't see an APFS formatting option using the disk utility. Is it a MAC OS extended format option?

Select the top level device in the list then, click the Erase button. It should be the default option for SSDs, internal or external.
Which OS version are you running? Your Disk Utility may look different. I'm on Monterey and the program has been updated for it.

Hi Brian - All formatting instructions carried but I still get the same error! Scroll to bottom...........

Hi Tony,
I have to run my mom around town for a while so it will be a couple of hours before I can continue this with you. Sorry.

No probs....make sure you bring her back!

Why APFS ? Did you try Mac Os extended (journaled) ? All my external SSD are so, I use ExFat only for share USB keys with Windows owners. If all the options have been tested, maybe your disk is damaged from factory ?

Gianni, As I explained above, APFS is the preferred file system for SSDs on the Mac OS. It provides the best performance for them. I still trying to understand why Tony is having problems using his so I'm going step-by-step to try and find the problem.
Tony, Can I see a Get Info window for your scratch drive showing space used and available and the permissions given to the drive.

Brian - Sorry for delay - on Greenwich Mean Time! As requested:

This is quite baffling Tony. Check Photo RAW's permissions in System Preferences > Security & Permissions. Again, your's may look a little different because we are on different OS versions but you should still see all these permissions for PR.

Hi Brian - mine is the same with the exception of "documents folder" so I ticked that and re-opened 2022 and still giving same error. I'm out today 'till 6:00pm London time so will log in around then

I'm sorry Tony, I'm out of ideas and have to turn you over to tech support. When you contact them you might want to include the link to this topic so they can see what we've already tried.

Brian - Many thanks for all the effort you have given - it is now in the hands of tech support as suggested....

Please let me know what they have to say. Thanks.

Hi Brian - I'm still waiting for response from tech support. Stevie asked me to reboot!!! - and send the log file which I did 2 days ago. Meantime, I still have PR2021 installed on my mac - made sure 2022 wasn't open, and then opened 2021. Hit Prefs to move PBC to same ext hdd and I get the same error....... I really thought that 2021 would be successful - but not the case. Does this help the intel on the problem? T.

Not for me, sorry.

Hi Brian - You did ask to let you know what tech support has to say about not being able to move PBC to ext hdd. Well after sending a couple of terminal screen shots they finally indicated the following........
"Our dev team has been unable to determine a root cause for the issue.
The suspect there's some other problem external of ON1 that is preventing us from writing to the particular volume.
We regret that we've been unable to determine a root cause for the issues you've been experiencing.
We're a small company and do our best to troubleshoot and work to correct all user reported issues. Unfortunately sometimes there is no resolve.I wonder if as and when a new release of the application is installed - it may overcome the problem???

One last thing I thought of to check. In the Finder do a Get Info on the SSD and check at to bottom of the window for the Ignore ownership on this volume setting. I have mine turned on.

Nevermind, I see you have it turned on.

I found that both my PBC and something called the NDS in App Support got very bloated, the latter to the tune of over 30GB. I assume that this was due to moving my images around between drives and that PR has no way of deleting obsolete previews and thumbnails. I therefore decided to delete everything and start again from scratch (no pun intended). With 38,000+ images on an external SSD, the NDS currently stands at 10GB and PBC, still building, at 1.16GB.
For convenience sake during building, I have shifted the PBC from a low speed SSD used as Scratch to my desktop. I am guessing this makes the building faster. Once it has all done, I will shift it back to the external drive. I am not doing any photo editing while the catalogue is created. Patience.

I don't believe it! It's three days later and my catalogue is still building. One thing I don't really understand: I kind of assumed that, with about 38,000 images in my archive, the PBC would consist of double that number of jpgs, one for a preview and one for a thumbnail. However, my WatchedContent folder currently holds close on 130,000 and is still refreshing at the rate for a dozen or so a minute. Is there a rational exclamation for this?
And is there a rational explanation for why the Percentage done feature that appears when one hovers over one's catalogued folders goes back-and-forth all the time. Mine reached 100% at more than one point, then has gone back to 0 and is even showed a minus figure with a long string of decimals. It's currently at 13%. It seems to be completely random to me and therefore of very little use.

Ray - I had similar problems also, in that random percentages would show up when hovering on a folder when cataloging. I am exasperated with catalogue folders! Should one's entire library be catalogued in order that searches can be made across the entire library? Coupled to that the fact that I can't move the PCB to my ext ssd completely takes away the facility of catalogues anyway....... so frustrating. I understand that On1 is a small dynamic company and keeps wanting to add feature upon features with new releases but the overall stability is incredibly frustrating. It could be such a great product........
I really want to use it!
