Updating from 2020 to 2022 - smart albums gone, pictures upside down
AnsweredHi,
after updating from 2020 version to 2022 version all my smart albums are gone and some of my pictures are now upside down?
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jorma

Smart Albums were removed from the program in the 2021 release.
As for your photos being shown upside down I have no idea Are they photos that were taken with your phone and it might have been held upside down? I'm reaching for ideas that might cause this. Were they previously rotated and that is now being ignored or applied twice?

Well that explains the disappearance of smart albums. Will miss them. Yes the pictures were taken on phone but they were not rotated. Not a biggie but it looks funny. Thanks Brian for your help. Oh, should clicking the "Cataloged" show all my pictures? I added the folders again on my "Cataloged folders" but clicking "Cataloged" on the advanced search shows nothing?
Thanks :-)

That option in the Advanced Search panel only tells the program where to do the searching. You still have to tell it what to search for.
If you want to see all the photos in a Catalog, select its top level entry in the My Catalogs panel then turn on the Show Sub-Folder Contents radio button at the bottom of the Browser window.

Not sure if I'm reading this thread properly, but just so there is no confusion...
You need to actually HAVE a catalog for the Search catalogs option to work. It needs to be created beforehand.

I have two folders under "My Catalogs". When I click on the "root" I can see yearly folders and then clicking at the bottom on the browse screen I can check the "Show sub folder contents". This will show all the pictures from the chosen file structure. However, when clicking on the Advanced search and the "Cataloged" I will get nothing shown? This is not how it used to work in 2020. One thing though I just noticed that the second folder that I added to "My catalogs", shows "90% done". As it is only shown when you hover long enough on the title, I didn't see it before. On 2020 catalog files used to show the cataloging process on the "hour clock" that was gradually filled. So maybe I must wait untill the cataloging process is all done before anything gets shown?

When I enable the Advanced Search panel and choose Search Cataloged Folders what I see depends upon what folder I have chosen in the Browser.
I have all my photos in a single Pictures folder (inside sub-folders of course) which I have cataloged. When I set up Advanced Search as described above I do see the entire contents of that Pictures folder and its sub-folders including the subfolders themselves. I've never used it that way before since I usually do not want it searching with each keypress as I set up what I'm looking for. I get everything else set up first then change to the Search Cataloged Folders setting to perform the actual search.
When I want to see the entire contents of my Pictures folder I just choose that folder in the Catalogs panel and turn on the Show Sub-Folders Contents option. That displays the photos without showing all the sub-folder icons too.
Yes, the progress display did change in 2021 when the stopwatch indicator was removed.
Let us know what happens when all the Catalogs have finished being built.

Ok the catalogs are now 100% built. If I click on the folder "My Sony pictures" on "My Catalogs", I will get the yearly folder structure in that pictures folder. If I then go on and click "Cataloged" in Advanced Search, I will get nothing. In fact I will always get nothing shown in Advanced search when I click "Cataloged". Oh, maybe I should just use time on the weekend to get to know the program more but it seems very strange as most go these things that I'm used to were quite easy to figure out in previous versions of the program...ah and trying to find anything on Browse window in search pane results in nothing found.

What is it you want to do? If you want to see all the photos inside the My Sony pictures folder/catalog just click the Show Sub-Folder Contents radio button at the bottom of the page.
Stay away from the Advanced Search panel unless you intend to do some actual searching according to some search criteria which you are not specifying in your description above.
Discussion of how the Advanced Search panel works is given in the User Guide starting on page 37.

This goes beyond Advanced search as there is absolutely no kind of search that works..it is as if indexing is totally gone. If I write any word that is in the description field in the search part of the browsing window use Advanced search and try typing in the Keyword - the resut is 0 pictures.
I've already removed and added the folders again. How can I force the program to rebuild the index?
Thanks

It would be helpful if you could show us a couple of screenshots showing the search you are setting up and the metadata from one of the photos you think it should be finding. Please show the entire screen for the search setup.
This works for me as you can see in the screenshot below.
Have you read through the section in the User Guide that talks about the Advanced Search pane and how to use it? It starts on page 37.

OK..I now found why the search did not work. It was because I had not ticked "Show sub-folder contents". This was new to me coming from 2020 version. I still think that the search function should find pictures from all cataloged folders and not just from the one that is chosen in "My Catalogs" but I can live with that. Waiting for Apple to release a new Mac mini or iMac in 2022 so I will likely combine my folders to one at that point.
Thanks for your patience with me! Much appreciated :-)

It does. Show Sub-Folder Contents only affects what is shown when viewing a Cataloged folder. It has no affect on searching.
When you select the option Search Cataloged Folders that is what it does. It will display all photos meeting the search criteria from all of your Cataloged folders. If you have not cataloged all your folders, those un-cataloged folders will not be searched.
When the option is set to Search All Photos, every photo the Browser has ever displayed will be searched and again, those matching the search criteria will be displayed regardless of where they are stored or the Show Sub-Folder Contents setting.
Once again, some screen captures showing us how you've set up the Advanced Search pane (the whole Photo RAW screen please) would be very helpful. I'd also like to see your My Catalogs pane in the same screenshot. You don't have to expand any of them, I just want to see the top level catalogs. Also include the metadata pane from at least one of the photos you think the program should be finding but isn't.
It will be easier for me to help if I can see what you are doing and seeing.

OK. Here they come. In the second picture I hope you see the keyword "Vaasa" and used in the search. Last one showing the results of the search. In the View menu I see Disable advanced search. To Search All Photos I guess I have to be in Browse mode? But even then the only way to see anything like choosing pictures that I have rated 5 stars I have to have the Show Sub-Folder contents on before I get any results.

Jorma, you are cutting off some of the search panel in your screen shots so hard to tell exactly what you are doing but you mention searching for images with 5 stars. From what I can see you are not searching for anything. In my screen shot below I am searching for images with 5 stars. You can see the 5 star option is highlighted. I do not have show subfolder contents tuned on.

I will add the few images shown in my screen shot are from across my catalog and not just the folder I have selected.

Ok I see now what you are doing in your last image, searching for the key word Vaasa. Be sure you have "Search Cataloged Folders" selected. You can populate the keyword in either the upper right box or the Advanced search pane. Either one will populate the other.

Brian I hope you don't mind if I jumped in here.
Jorma I can duplicate your results only if I have "Filter Current Photos" selected with "Show Subfolders" off.
Turn "Show Sub-folders" on and images appear.
Bottom line if "Filter Current Photos" is selected and show sub-folders contents is off images will be displayed only if they are in the current folder. If Show Sub-folders is on any images matching criteria in that folder and all others below it will be shown.

Not at all David, I appreciate your help, thank you. I think you've nailed Jorma's problem right on the head.
Jorma, when your search is set for Filter Current Photos only what is visible in the Browser's window will be searched. When you have a Cataloged folder selected with Show Sub-Folder Contents OFF, only that individual folder will be searched. With it ON that folder and all its sub-folders will be searched. This is why turning that option on is finding your photos while it does not with it off as David has explained.
If you want to search all your cataloged folders at once use the Search Cataloged Folders option. This used to be on by default but it was changed because every single keypress in the Advanced Search pane would initiate a new search so typing in 'Vaasa' for example would result in 5 searches being performed with long waits for each search to complete before you could type the next letter. That made the feature nearly unusable. We would have to change to the Current Photos option, type in the search term(s), then turn on the search throughout the catalogs.
You can also search individual Cataloged folders, they are shown at the bottom of the list where you tell the program where to do the searching.
The last option is Search All Photos which will search folders that have not been cataloged as well but only those you have browsed through at some time.

YES!! Now it makes total sense to me.. at last :-) I thought I had clicked every possible menu there is to click but somehow I managed to miss that one...doh :-)
David and Brian, thank you both so much. Got the 2022 version in Black Friday sale so it's all new and I have a lot of things to go through. This will get me started nicely.
Cheers

I'm glad we could help.
Here's another tip which hopefully won't be needed with the new search feature coming next month.
If you want to search for a NOT condition you have to search for everything except what you want excluded. Right now the program does not have a NOT or NOT EQUALS option.
