RAW 2022.1 will not save edited changes
I have gaming Laptop MSI and I have updated NVidia Geforce graphic card since my PC was getting slow. I improved that 100% and then I have downloaded new Raw 2022.1 version on top of that. The program works very good...fast.. smooth... except it will not save my editings. I was editing an image for 1.5 hrs saving between few times and reopening the image just to make sure everything was ok. After I closed the program and opened again, the changes are actually not saved. I have tested it few more times with different images from different folders and drives....but unfortunately it will not save and I cannot find the reason why is it not saving. SOS thank you

Hi Michael.
So, how were you saving your work. On1 doesn't actually have a save option, so i need to know what you were doing.
0 -
That doesn't seem likely as the program saves your edits on both an internal database and in .on1 sidecar files.
• When you use Windows Explorer to look at the folder with one of your edited photos do you see the .on1 file for that photo?
• Are you adding any new Layers, or using the HDR or Panorama modules to merge multiple photos? All of those actions will cause the creation of a new .onphoto file which is where you will find your edits.

I am saving / confirming by clicking DONE (all I mean) and it won't save anything - like just simple "clone brushing" . Before upgrading to the new version 2022.1, it was OK.

I have updated the NVidia Card because my on1 Raw 2022 was very slow. That problem got fixed after i have upgraded the graphic card. Then I went and reinstalled fresh version of Raw 2022 and I noticed now there was available 2022.1 So this is the only difference I have made, between downloading 2022 couple month ago and reinstalling the 2022.1 over it last night.
Here I just want to extra clarify. I was editing for like 1.5 hrs. and then I learned it was showing editing each time I would close the file by clicking DONE and reopening that same image. It was showing the changes I just have made. I could repeat this ( edit / save by clicking DONE) as many times and it would always appear to be saved in the browse. Then, I would go and completely close the program. When I would re-open the program again, all changes were gone and the image file was back to its original / unedited. (no layers used in my editing or anything else - just simple mask / cloning brushing. The 2022 would always save my changes before up until upgrading last night to raw 2022.1
So I went back to test it and trying to find the problem, with just few strokes of editing like "cloning" and it would never save any changes I made again. This is just so weird. I have never had anything similar before. I was very happy with the program speed / response which is really great now ...fast and smooth. It is just that the saving is now new problem. Thank you guys for helping.
( after done no changes to any settings ..just saying) ;)

You did not say if you are seeing the .on1 sidecar file in the folder with the edited photo. You'll have to use Windows Explorer as Photo RAW won't show them.
0 -
yes it is there Brian
file 3418.on1 (11kb)
and 3418.xmp (2kb)
besides the original file CR2 (25 575 kb)
0 -
So, I have repeated the test
I have edited one image by few click and saved it (clicking Done)
I go to on1 browse and re-open the file as it is showing the changes in the edited browse thumbnail picture sending it to EDIT.
When the picture reopens it reopens correctly including the edited changes.
It is only when I close the ON1 program completely and then reopen it it WILL NOT show the edited area anymore / edited changes in the image and instead it will show the image in the original un-edited version.
But when I go back to check the folder type of files, I still can see the correct files along with .on1, the original image file and xmp.

Is there a link to download 2022 version instead the 2022.1 ??? I would try to go back to the previous version to see if that resolves the problem. thank you

Your description doesn't make sense to me. Once you're Done and back in Browse, the program doesn't do anything with the edits any more so there is no reason that you should be losing them.
One thing you can easily try is to delete the settings. For some reason, this fixes many weird problems, so try it.

If you didn't save the 2022.0 installer, you'll have to contact On1 support to get a copy but I think you should contact them about this problem anyway since something very unusual is going on here.

Do you see the little flag on the image with the lost edits that says it was edited? You'll only see this in the Grid View.
What do you see in the Info panel's Settings?

Brian, I do not have the little icon in the bottom right corner after i perform the "test edit". Not anymore. I did have it there 2 days ago when i still had the older version. I do have the little flag in all the previous editings I have performed ever since but not at this time with this problem.
I have just uninstalled the 2022.1 since I thought this might be the problem and downloaded the older version that was OK (the 2022.0) hoping this could fix the not saving problem but unfortunately I was wrong. The Info Panel shows exactly what shows the panel you posted here. All the data. My RAW image is little larger...about 25 mb..thats all.I was just testing it now and nope...it wont save the editing.0 -
This Error is on top of everything else....I just went to a very different automotive folder and duplicated a image. The result is visible in the picture.

Here is another interesting message I never had before. This was yesterday when I performed the same task...duplicating an image.

The Recursion too deep error means you ran out of RAM. Recursion is when a piece of the program calls itself over and over and over. It has to remember how to get back and where it was so after a while it can consume a lot of memory.
I see the unknown file system error everyone in a while too. I think it means there is some kind of corruption in that file or one of its sidecars.
Not being able to see the edited flag is a definite indicator that the program has lost track of the edits. That does not mean they are gone, only that the program thinks there are none.
The .on1 sidecar can be opened with a text editor (not a word processor!). All the metadata info will be in readable ASCII text. All the editing info is stored in a binary 'blob' (that's the official technical term. 😉). It will show up as a bunch of gibberish. If you see that gibberish then the edits are still present and you just have to get the program to re-read the sidecar file to find them. I've been doing that by renaming the folder that photo is in. That forces a rescan of the folder contents which causes the program to find the edits again.

I have just had this on Mac.
Did some edits and clicked Done, preview updated but no edited image icon and when I went back into Edit none of edits there. Sidecar file hadn't changed since October.
Tried another image with same non-result.
Restarted On1 and tried again, this time it work on both my test images.
Never had this problem before, including the last few weeks running pre-release builds of 2022.1 with same extra diagnostics installed, just put these back as having Closedown hangups which was why On1 gave access to pre-release.

Did some edits and clicked Done, preview updated but no edited image icon and when I went back into Edit none of edits there. That's different than what Michael has described. He said he could go back and forth from the Browser to the Editor until he quit the program. After that the edits were gone.
It's all very weird and in need of fixing one way or another.

Welll... I just had this happen. I did some editing and when I clicked Done Photo Raw went into 'Not Responding' for a minute or more. When it finally recovered... no edits. On checking the sidecar in Explorer I can see that it was never updated. Checked the logs and didn't see anything unusual.

So I redid my whole edit, created a snapshot this time and when finished, the edits were dumped again and no snapshot either.
So I deleted settings and started over, the third time it saved properly.
Note that I had already deleted settings this morning in order to get Snapshots working so whatever the hangup is, it doesn't take long to happen.
I'll write all of this up tomorrow and send it in.

Rick, did you reload On1 between first and second attempts? I tried twice and got two failures then reloaded, without deleting settings, and it worked on third attempt.
I am wondering if it is something like sidecar file not getting written for some reason and then on return to Browse the old one gets re-read and updates the database overwriting the edits. There was a comment sometime back about sidecar files taking precedence in relation to restoring backups, but I am not sure if time stamps are taken into account.
Neither of the test files I hit the problem on had existing edits so reverting to old sidecar files would be the same as resetting edits.
I put in a bug report but all I could say was what happened, no real evidence to supply and not immediately reproducible so can't take screen recording. If I hit it again on one edit I will start a screen recording and try another edit to see if that fails. But that would just be more evidence that things go wrong with no real pointer as to why.

Not sure if by reload you mean reinstall or restart, either way, the third attempt worked after deleting the settings which also is a restart.

More Test done Interesting results (at least to me)
I hope this will help you guys to take the next step in fixing this as I am not able...;)
Clean re-installed 2022.0
Editing and on1 speed works just perfect / smooth and fast
test included a brush cloning of small area (went fine)
when done and before clicking DONE, I exported as JPG - then clicked DONE went to detailed preview, its showing edits in the original image
went to grid style preview - both orig image and exported jpg image shows edited changes
clicking on original file to open in Detailed Browse preview - image now opens with no edits
doing the same with exported JPG - edits are saved / shown in the detailed browse preview
Now I did this same test with the difference I have exported the same image now in PSD
same process...but only exported PSD version would save for reopening and more editing after the ON1 program is closed.
So here this say exporting is OK....but the side car I would say may be somehow corrupted? This I don't know and it is up to you guys. ;)
( the original Raw image file is about 25mb and after exporting to PSD file saved over 200mb)

Michael, you should report this to tech support. "We guys" do not work for the company and we cannot fix it any more than you. We're just other users like yourself who want to help.

Brian, I think I know that...what I thought some of you may be able to narrow it down to get more investigations on this than I can. I have been with on1 in touch for some time with each and every problem but so far they keep repeating they cannot reproduce the problems and they politely apologize for the inconvenience and frustrations. i just got reply from them today and I am going to shar it down bellow for clean install ;
Here are the steps for doing a clean install of ON1 Photo RAW:
To uninstall:
1. Go to Start (Windows) menu
2. Select Settings
3. Select Apps and this will list all installed applications
4. Scroll down to ON1 Photo RAW 2022
5. Select it and then press the Uninstall button
6. When uninstall is finished go to C:\ProgramData and locate the ON1 folder and move that to the Recycle Bin
7. Next go to C:\Users\<Your username>\AppData\Roaming and locate the ON1 folder and move that to the Recycle Bin.
If you do not see ProgramData or the Appdata folders, they are hidden by default by Windows. You can get to them by opening up a Windows
Explorer Window and typing in c:\programdata and then in a second window %appdata% and then press return. That will take you to each folder.
To begin re-installing you will need to completely disable both your antivirus and firewall prior to reinstalling, launching and activating the program for the first time. Please make you are following the steps below as these steps have fixed similar problems for all of our other Windows users:
1. We recommend downloading and running a registry cleaner to remove any possible bad left over files, we recommend this free one:
www.piriform.com/download
2. After completing the registry cleaner, it is absolutely critical to reboot your machine.
(We'd also recommend ensuring you have all Windows updates installed, and running the SFC command to ensure integrity of Windows)
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system
3. When you have returned from the reboot, please disable all antivirus, firewall and automatic backup software on this machine and download and install ON1 Photo Raw 2022 from the link below. After disabling your antivirus and firewall, please make sure these programs are not running in the background via Windows Task Manager.
Here is a dropbox link for the latest build of ON1 Photo RAW 2022:
https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409689897613-ON1-PHOTO-RAW-2022-Release-Notes-and-Download-
4. When the download is complete, please right click on the .exe file and choose "Run as the Administrator" to launch the installer.
5. When the installation is complete, if you have a dedicated graphics card please open the NVIDIA Control Panel and make sure ON1 Photo RAW is configured to run exclusively off of this GPU. Here is some more information on how to do so:
https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000138471
6. Please launch the program by right clicking on the Desktop shortcut and choose "Run as the Administrator" to launch the app.
7. Sign in to activate the program with your ON1 email address and password.
We apologize for the ongoing hassles.0 -
Rick, it was a simple restart - quit On1 and then double click on the Dock icon.

David, I'll try that next time it happens.

This problem is happening for me more and more. The first edit I tried today wouldn't save. I see that the problem persists if you keep trying without restarting the program. As David mentions, simply restarting Photo Raw is enough to clear the problem, but only for a while.
Deleting the settings file doesn't help with this problem and there is nothing in the Logs that I can see during the time that it happens.
Since I was able to reproduce the problem over and over, I was able to get a video to send to Tech support.
I may have to roll back to the previous version since I don't want to waste time doing edits that don't get saved.

I've taken to quitting the program after finishing each photo lately. Just as a precautionary measure. It could be why I've not seen this yet.

Be sure to report all this to support.

problems Solved
My MSI gaming pc and ON1 RAW 2022.1 have never been working better.
1/ I have replaced Thermal paste / pads on my MSI CPU as it was pretty much gone over the 4.5 years.
Symptoms - PC overheating, slowing down to ridiculously slow speeds, PC that is exceeding minimum requirements to run certain apps may behave like 15 year old pc that needs to be replaced. just because of the missing CPU Thermal paste / pads
2/ Updated Windows wo the latest version as I had the 4.5 years old Windows version never updated
3/ Updated NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 Graphic Card - that made crazy difference I cant even describe in words. Now it is just simply fast and smooth, Raw 2022 now works on first click... finally after such a long time of struggles.
4/ I have just finalized all of this today by CLEAN ON1 Reinstall and I have followed the ON! tech clean install instructions to the finest detail. That just helped so much. Thank you Stevie and Cody.
All my problems, extremely slow speed, or the Non Saving problems and other unexpected Errors and tone of other surprises are gone. Thank you to all of you here and ON! support, I hope this overview Info will help other so improve the Performance. And remember, THE THERMAL CPU PASTE is crucial and in reality, none had suggested this until I have learned one day exigently about it so do include it in the trouble shooting.
...and again, sorry for my English ;(
