I get a grey scale layer when I use gradient mask

Please help a rookie:

 

I keep getting a grey scale chequered area when I use the gradient mask. Any idea what I am doing wrong.

Attached image shows the problem.

  You are applying the gradient mask to the Layer and there isn't another Layer below it so you are seeing the blank canvas being exposed. Unless you want to blend 2 photos together you should be masking your Effects and Local Adjustments.
