What do you mean by they don't show up in Browse? What are you seeing, an empty space where there should be a preview or a square with a diagonal line through it?

What colorspace are they in? Photo RAW does not support greyscale images.

What happens if in the Finder you Duplicate one of them without its sidecar file(s)? Does the duplicate show up in the Browser?

Screenshots are especially helpful for these kinds of situations. They eliminate the need to ask so many questions. 😉

Have the same problem. When I download family images shared in Smugmug that were taken with an iPhone. It is an HEIC format issue.  Here is the Browse of 2 of the same color images.

None of those files are HEIC, they are all jpegs. My guess is that Smugmug is converting the HEIC that was uploaded to a jpeg for display and that is what you've downloaded.

Can you share one of the photos that is not being displayed? Upload it to a file sharing site like Dropbox or WeTransfer and post the download link here.

What happens when you try to view one of them in Photo View or the Editor?

When this photo is downloaded it turns into 2. Both jpgs. Only one will show up in On1 in Browse, Photo View or Editor. In Photo View and Editor it goes to a blank grey screen.

Both photos can be viewed at the Mac Finder level. Also both open in Apple Preview, Apple Photos, and Pixelmator Pro.

What kind of file was originally uploaded to Smugmug? Was it an HEIC that they converted?

When I clicked the link above, only one photo was downloaded and Photo RAW is able to work with it.

How are you downloading them from Smugmug? What happens when you use the link you posted above?

Well that proves the problem is Smugmug. The corrupted files only show up when downloading as the Admin. When logged out or on non password protected download it just is the one file. Very glad to know this as I have been going into the downloaded folders and one by one deleting the dups. Have been hesitant to do this because in On1 it was not possible to see if they really were duplicates.

When I first reported this problem to Smugmug in November, they said they were aware of the problem and are working on it. Will send them this additional clue. Thank you.

I would try opening one of the files PR can't handle in a text editor just to see what's in it. But I'm curious like that. For your problem I would simply trash the duplicates and not worry about it too much.

Do not have text editor. Over my head. Tried to upload the photo. Another clue. Says "You can only upload images (jpeg, gif or png). Image uploads are limited to 2 MB. IMG_8550.jpg is 1.7MB.

All computers come with a text editor. 😉 On the Mac it's called Text Edit, on Windows Notepad.

That's OK. That error message tells me what the text editor would have, it most likely isn't a jpeg. It's probably some kind of Smugmug metadata or something like that which has a .jpg extension.

You've got the file you want so just trash them and don't worry about it until they get it fixed.

This is what I'm seeing in browse & when I try opening an image. Need to look a bit further but I think Brian Lawson may have answered the question as I suspect they are greyscale, lots are defo mono images. If this is the case any suggestions for something to undertake bulk automated conversions to something On1 can work with?

At Brian's suggestion I also tried deleting all the On1 sidecar files this made no difference.

That is an indication that the file is in the grayscale colorspace and Photo RAW cannot work with it. I wrote an AppleScript that I put into my Services folder so I can right-click on an image that needs to be converted and select my conversion script from the Services menu. It opens the image in Preview and applies the Adobe RBG colorspace. I use it for one at a time but it should be easy enough to modify to batch process a set of images.
