Make a Custom Brush - how?

Can someone explain how to make a custom brush?

I have tried to make a brush of a bird shape by masking out a bird in a photograph, exporting it as a tif file. The outcome results with a bird but also some background detail.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

I realise there are sets of brushes available but I like to think a photo is my own.
