1 hour on, and it is still showing 3%, but the Cache folder is now at 45GB 😲

    2 more hours, 3% and 68GB

Yes, this is normal. Building a Catalog takes some time. You just have to wait for it to finish. I've got a library of 12K photo and it takes about 24 hours to build the Catalog. Don't rely upon the percent completed value until it has finished and shows 100%. Prior to that you can see it go up and down without any apparent reason.

The size of the PerfectBrowseCache is dependent upon the size of the previews you chose to generate and the number of photos in the Catalog. See Catalogs and Caches - ON1 Photo RAW 2022 & ON1 PHOTO RAW 2021 for more information.

Catalog building is very processor and memory intensive and you will see slower performance from your system while the process is running. Things will return to normal when it has finished.

To view more than just the currently selected folder in the Browser, go to that folder's name in the Catalog panel on the left side of the screen, then right-click it and choose the command Show Subfolder Contents. The folder and its sub-folders must be cataloged to use the Show Subfolder Contents command. You can set the sorting order from the pop-up menu at the bottom of the screen.

Because of the size of the PerfectBrowseCache and for improved performance reasons I've added a drive that is used only for the program's Scratch space and its PerfectBrowseCache. This way I don't have to worry about how big it gets, or filling my boot drive with it. You can control this with Preferences > System settings.

As always, Brian's explanation is clear and succinct.

My PBC is around 66GB and I have over 89,000 images at 589GB. The older ones are all JPGs.

I know Brian is a great advocate of the PBC residing on an external drive. However, I recently had an issue whereby it was not updating whenever I added or modified images. Support said it should be on the internal drive and, since moving it back, I have not had the issue. Fortunately I have the space, since my Photos are all on an external drive and I still have the other driver to use as the Scratch.

Ray, you need to press support about the PBC not updating on an external drive. The company added that feature for this very reason, to get the ever larger PBC off the boot volume where it can fill the drive and bring down the entire system. For them to tell you "don't use this feature we added to prevent that problem because it doesn't work" is an admission that there is a bug in the program and they should be pressing the engineers to get it fixed instead of telling users "don't use it."

I'm glad you brought that up because I've wanted to make this point for a while now but I forgot who it was that told us support's response. 😀

OK Brian, I didn't know that.

I will move the PBC back to the external drive and see if the problem re-occurs. I am going on a short trip in a couple of weeks and will be taking a reasonable number of photos. I will watch for the PBc updating.
