Catalogues and where they are
I have a question on the catalogue being generated. What is the default place where they are placed?I import my photos via the App right into my external SSD.I edit my photos and make a catalogued folder of them.I was just wondering where these catalogued folder are?On my external SSD in the side car files?
The photos themselves remain in the folder you imported them to on your external SSD. If you have chosen to create sidecar files then when you edit a photo, including changing meta data, then these .on1 files are created in the same folder. This is the case regardless of whether or not the folder is cataloged.
PhotoRAW keeps a database of images it knows about. This is held in the user’s application area. On a Mac this is in /<user>/library/application support/ON1 PhotoRAW 2022 (or something like that, I am on my iPad not computer so can’t check). This location can’t be changed and the database is not something normal users would want to access directly. I believe that more information is stored in the database for every image in a catalogued folder, added during the intitial cataloging process and updated as changes are made.
Every image in a catalogued folder has a thumbnail image created for it which are held in a cache folder. If a lot of images are in the catalogued folders then this folder can get very big. Default location is Pictures folder but for space and performance reasons many users move it to a separate scratch disk. This can be done by making a change in Preferences. It is best to do this before any folders are catalogued since moving causes the folders to be recatalogued which can take time. Note that the cache size in same preferences does not refer to the catalogued folder cache which can grow to as large as it needs to.
I hope this helps.0
Just to clarify a couple of David's points.
The path is ~/Library/Application Support/ON1/ON1 Photo RAW 202x for Macintosh and
C:\Userss\<user>\AppData\Roaming\ON1\ON1 Photo RAW 202x for Windows.
The default location for the PerfectBrowseCache which holds previews for your Cataloged folders is at the same path given above. Moving it does not cause the Catalog(s) to be rebuilt but in my experience it does not actually move the PBC when moved to a different drive, it just makes a new copy there and you have to delete it from your Macintosh HD or C: drive yourself. This is because of how the OS does things. Moving to a different drive leaves the original file/folder in place while moving it to a different location on the same drive does actually move it as only the file structure gets modified. The files don't actually move to a different physical location on the drive.
Yes, the Cache Size slider in Preference > System does not affect the size of the PerfectBrowseCache. That is for a different cache used by the Browser for viewing non-cataloged folders.
You can read more about the caches, PBC, and Catalogs at Catalogs and Caches - ON1 Photo RAW 2022 & ON1 PHOTO RAW 2021.0
