Masking NoNoiseAI
Can this be done? (I am going crazy thinking about it)
I have some low res JPGs from some years back that I am working on afresh. If I apply NoNoise AI to the entire image, it is massively distorted. However, the sky has jaggies in it that would benefit from NoNoise AI. How to do it please. I am looking at using the Mask Sky pulldown.

If I read it correctly, you want to use NoNoise on only part of your photo. To do that, duplicate the Layer and apply NoNoise to only one of them. Now you can mask the top layer to combine parts of both layers. Once you have that, make a stamped layer to continue working. Note that you should do the layers before adding any effects otherwise they will become baked and un-editable when you make the stamped layer.

Thanks. Thought it would be something involving layers.
Any technical reason why there is no straightforward mask option—as with effects, local adjustments etc.?

Yes, according to the user guide, it's because nonoise works at the RAW level which is why it's in the Develop module. There is no masking for anything in Develop.

That's a pity. In this case I was working on JPGs not RAW. And how come Topaz DeNoise has simple masking that enables you to brush in when you want the denoising applied? Just saying.

It's because Topaz works differently than Photo Raw. PR is always nondestructively working with the original file and you can make adjustments to the Nonoise settings on the original file at any time. Once you complete work in Topaz Nonoise you must save it as a new file.

NoNoise has the High Detail option which is supposed to help with JPGs etc so not working at RAW level. In theory I suppose at some point On1 could add a NoNoise filter to Effects based on this. If Tack Sharp can also do a good job on JPGs etc then one has new denoising/sharpening filter that can be used to target extra denoising/sharpening after doing basic corrections in Development tab.
See what 2023 brings and then perhaps add it to RAW Project, though still waiting to see suggestions I made months ago appear, so not sure how useful this would be these days.

It can now be done of course in v2023 using layers and creating an AI preset. Hurrah!
David: As for raising issues on the so-called "Photo Raw Project", I think it's a waste of time. I don't think anyone at Photo Raw takes any notice of most suggestions.

The Photo RAW Project is where the company goes to get ideas for new features and improvements to the program. It is far from a waste of time. Just look at all the suggestions marked “under consideration” or “in progress”, etc. It may take a while for new suggestions to be evaluated depending upon where the company is in their development cycle.

I will take you word for it Brian. And raise a new suggestion (about customising the sky replacement menu)
