AI masking tools

I too find the new Quick Mask in 2023 to be (far too often) very imprecise. While I can see its utility in some images, I think it would be good to ADD back in the ability to use the old method of Quick Mask, where you get to choose areas to add or drop.

    Maybe it could be under the "Mode" drop down;

     - AI in

     - AI out

     - Paint in

     - Paint out

Here is an example of just how bad the new version can be - with no option to refine things (while using Quick Mask) and just how much better 2022 allowed me to use Quick Mask

    Original photo

With Quick Mask in 2023 (as it ended up on a local adjustment)

And with Quick Mask in 2022. Note: I could have refined this even better in 2022. In 2023, I can't refine things in Quick Mask at all! This is as it ended up in a local adjustment. I chose to view the mask so it really shows how much better the mask is.

I will enter this in the Photo RAW project as well, but given that the last date anything there was actioned by ON1 is from May 16th, I am posting here too.

I agree entirely with this request to restore the 2022 version of AI masking with the add/drop option. I have experienced way more "misses" than "hits" in using the new AI masking, and find myself doing much more traditional masking/refining than I have needed to do since you added the original add/drop version of AI masking.  The new version generally has been unable to correctly identify things like "sky" or "water" in the images in which I have tried to use it; it often hasn't even been close.  For now, when I want to work on an image that requires significant masking, I'll work on it using your 2022 software.

The old AI mask needs to be brought back, but not as a suggested feature. That would take ages. It needs to be brought back now to correct a mistake.

I say anyone who wants it back should contact On1 and say so. The more people who send a message, the more likely it will happen.

Long term On1 user. While I am rarely swayed by the naysayers on the web, it does appear that On1 has stumbled with is release. The issue with nVidia cards needs a rapid solution ,as for many the new release is unusable.

Many wonder why a perfectly good tool was retired (mask AI) when it could have been simply left in place and the new capabilities added as an additional tool. No tool is right all the time and many have had well working workflows disrupted. Mask quality overall in the new AI needs work and while I suspect it will improve over time, I could often get a better mask with the old Mask AI. I hope they will add the old tool back as they have done with other masking tools in the past. No cost to them and much good will, if they listen to the customer.

I hope and expect that we will see patch releases early on. For now I have 2023 but will use 2022.5 until corrections are available.

I am having a terrible time with most masking tools, renaming the image being worked on in layers, moving from one layer to another, random events happening, endless "spinning". I wonder if I need re re install....or ?

What do you mean "Renaming the image"?

As for the rest, take a look at sections 5 and 6 of these tips...

(I was referring to giving each layer a new name)

and what's the problem with that? All you have to do is double click the header.

It never works to double click the header.

You're not giving me anything to work with. If you want to actually explain what you're doing in detail or post a screenshot if it helps, we might come up with some suggestions.

Are we thinking the same thing for "header"? With the Layers pane expanded so you can see the different Layers what you should be double-clicking is the Layer Name.

Yes Brian, this is what wasn’t working. With installing the new update tonight I can at least name them even though it often takes multiple tries. The refine brushes are still erratic and not working as they should. I’ll just keep working on finding solutions. No need to respond.
