Question for moderators
Long term user. Every release uncovers new problems and I am usually not fazed by that, but there seems to be more substantial outcry with issues with 2023. Are you seeing that, or do you think we are seeing a much smaller vocal minority? I just cant seem to get a handle on it from forums here and dpreview. What are you seeing?

I am not a moderator but have been following these forums, FaceBook etc quite closely.
The big issue with the 2023 release is that it seems to have uncovered an issue with recent NVIDA drivers where NoNoise/Tack Sharp don't work and other things have problems. Rolling back to earlier drivers or messing around with Windows/NVIDA settings have been reported as resolving these issues without any changes to 2023. To me this suggests that the issue is with NVIDA not On1. The problem was discovered during beta testing and On1 have been working with NVIDA to resolve it but so far recent driver updates have not fixed it.
Given the number of Windows users with NVIDA cards that use affected drivers this has led to much of the outcry about the quality of the release, with On1 being blamed for something that does seem to be out of their control. Not sure what the answer would have been - hold back the whole release until NVIDA has a fix? Hold back Windows until NVIDA has fix as works well on Macs?
That is not to say that there are issues with the release itself which show up on Macs, Windows systems with other video cards or on systems with NVIDA cards where drivers have been rolled back. For example
- Panasonic RW2 raw files crash systems
- AI masking is not as good as expected, works well on some images/elements within images but not on others
- The old Quick Mask has been replaced by AI based one. Many people have complained that this has removed a method for using AI to create masks when fully automated AI masks are bad. On1 have said they are looking into the possibility of bringing this back
These are the sort of problems/feedback that normally come up with new release. Often On1 resolve the major ones in a minor release soon after the first release, with more tidying up in .1 release around Christmas/New Year. We will see if this happens again this year.

I think you've posed an excellent question, but... My observation has been that the vocal moderators here tend to favor the happy minority.
I say that as I'm sitting here doing my very best to resist the urge to hit the download button for 2023 and prove the naysayers wrong. Mostly trying to resist because that has never worked out for me in the past. Also, I have vivid memories of AI-Resize and also Loupedeck integration.

I agree with everything David wrote.

For starters, I would expect the release notes (or even the installer) should have come with a big honking warning for Windows users using NVIDA that they need to downgrade their drivers to a version that was released in March of this year. Except it seems that On1 didn't even realize that workaround existed until users figured it out after release. So they knew the problem before release, and even though they didn't know a workaround before release, they still released the product.... without a huge warning label on the proverbial package. Their KB article, which was updated *today*, still says that the issue is "only" with the 'super' NVIDIA cards, which I think has been thoroughly demonstrated on their own forums as not the case. https://on1help.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/9778478526477-Known-Issue-with-ON1-PHOTO-RAW-2023-NVIDIA-Super-Video-Cards-ON1-NoNoise-2023-ON1-PHOTO-RAW-2023
Given the popularity of NVIDA cards, the knowledge of the problem prior to release, and the absence of a known workaround prior to release, I can't fathom a reason to have released it for Windows without *A GREAT BIG UP-FRONT DISCLAIMER*.

Not sure it is an NVIDA driver issue as I have rolled back to the previous 10 drivers and still have the "crash"
when starting to edit with each one. PR 2022.5 runs smooth as butter. No issues. I am sure a 'fix' is on the way.

I think there are different issues being confused here. Black screen and crashing are not the same problem and not necessarily caused by video drivers.
The Black screen problem is new, but I've had the crashing problem since 2022.5 was released. Since that release date I have NEVER been able to run 2022.5 for more than 30 seconds before crashing. That problem hasn't been fixed yet and it's been carried over to 2023. I have a new PC now running the new PR 2023 and that condition may have changed for me, but it still exists.
So, being able to blame the black screen on defective drivers, that was lucky, but the crashing... no, that's old news.
* Note that the crashing problem I'm referring to is the one that marks RAW files as defective even when they are not.

What Nvidia problem am I supposed to have? I have the 3080 Ti and have not noticed anything related to the stability issues.

The nvidia problems don't affect non 'super' series cards.

I have problems with AMD card which are similar to nvidia problems and are not addressed at all in new release. It's on1 side and on how they are using video resources in 2023 development.
