    I am sure Brian that the sidecar file was somehow corrupted, for the simple reason I could open the NEF file in Affinity or Lightroom 6. Thanks for your input.

    I have over 45,000 images and I started with 4 folders/year when I hit the problem. I think I will forego the cataloging for now. Thanks for the feedback.
