I managed to eliminate the black border: By (I believe) showing the mask of the entire affected layer, which showed a red border of unselected pixels along that edge; I selected those into the mask...

BTW, I am not using catalogs, as I'm wary of using a feature that may demand more CPU/RAM; would rather focus my use of available RAM to enable more-complex edits.
