importing vs copying onto HD?

I'm sure this is a silly question, but what are the advantages of "importing" photos compared with just copying them to my hard drive and developing them from there? Thanks!

Resize black box

Hi all, I'm using Resize 2020 from LR and everything seems ok, but when the photo gets back to LR, there is a black box where it should have cropped and resized. Any suggestions? Thanks!
