Point of information - I have a GTX 1050Ti (+ 8GB RAM + scratch drive + dedicated SSD drive for images) and I have no problems.

Thank you all for your responses.It didn't occur to me that there was a need to recatalogue.Swapping browse view eg filmstrip to grid and back again seem to do the job.

I have solved it! The "speed" controls the number of "frames". 157 images at a speed of 0.5 gives 57 frames (which was the setting). Obvious when you know!
