Using ON1 2022 Products with Adobe® Photoshop®
ON1 Effects 2022, ON1 NoNoise AI 2022, ON1 Portrait AI 2022, and ON1 Resize AI 2022 integrate tightly with Adobe Photoshop for enhancing your images.
Note: ON1 Photo RAW 2022 is not compatible with Adobe Photoshop. Functionality has changed from previous versions. Starting with version 2022, plugin support is only available when using ON1 Effects 2022, ON1 NoNoise AI 2022, ON1 Portrait AI 2022, or ON1 Resize AI 2022. These apps are also bundled together in the Professional Plugin Bundle 2022.
Effects, NoNoise AI, Portrait AI, and Resize AI can be used as plugins to Adobe Photoshop CS6 and above. When you run the product installer, the plugin files for Adobe Photoshop will be installed automatically.
Accessing from Photoshop
ON1 is accessible from within Photoshop in two ways, from the File > Automate menu, and from the Filter > ON1 menu. From the Automate menu, you can access Effects, NoNoise AI, Portrait AI, and Resize; from the Filter menu, you can access Effects, NoNoise AI, and Portrait AI.
Accessing ON1 Plugins through Adobe Photoshop – Video Instructions:
File Access When Using ON1 as a Plugin
When you edit an image sent from Photoshop to ON1, you are editing Photoshop’s currently selected layer. By default, ON1 makes a copy of the layer, so your original layer is saved, unless it is a Smart Object. If you’d like to change this preference, see the Plug-Ins section of the Preferences window.
There are two options for editing an image in Effects, NoNoise AI, or Portrait AI: you can send the layer to ON1 for final editing, or you can save the editing layer as a Smart Object in Photoshop, which will let you re-edit the photo in ON1 with your previous settings intact.
ON1 Effects 2022
If you use ON1 Effects as a plugin from another image editing app (Photoshop, for example), we recommend using the Photoshop format (.PSD) as the exchange file format for maximum compatibility. If your saved file will be larger than 2GB, or more than 30,000 pixels on a side, your image will automatically be saved in the .PSB (or Large Document) format. This is a newer version of the PSD format designed for larger file sizes and is fully compatible with Effects.
ON1 NoNoise AI 2022
For optimal results when working with raw images in conjunction with Photoshop, you should process the raw files in the standalone version of NoNoise AI, export them as DNGs, and then open them in Photoshop. See ON1 NoNoise AI — How To Launch the App and Plugins for more information.
ON1 Portrait AI 2022
Depending upon your workflow, you might wish to work on the primary Photoshop layer, or you might want Portrait to create a duplicate of the layer when it applies retouching. To do this automatically, you must use Portrait via the File > Automate menu.
ON1 Resize 2022
ON1 Resize 2022 is accessible from within Photoshop via the File > Automate menu. Selecting that item will open the image in Resize. When you are finished resizing your image, clicking the Done button inside Resize will apply the transformation and save it back to Photoshop at the new dimensions. (Clicking Cancel inside Resize will close the file without making changes.)
EDITING A PHOTO FROM PHOTOSHOP FOR FINAL EDITING
To use ON1 inside Photoshop, when you do not wish to re-edit your operations:
- Open the image you want to work on in Photoshop.
- Select the layer you want to work on. (Depending upon your Plug-Ins Preference, make a duplicate if you want to preserve the original layer (Layer > Duplicate))
- From the Filter menu, select ON1 and then Effects, NoNoise AI, or Portrait AI.
- When you’re finished editing your photo, click the Done button in ON1.
EDITING A PHOTO FROM PHOTOSHOP TO PRESERVE EDITS
To be able to re-edit your Photoshop images at a later point inside ON1, you will use Photoshop’s Smart Object technology. To do this, follow these steps:
- Open the image you want to work on in Photoshop.
- Select the layer you want to work on.
- Right-click on the layer and choose Convert to Smart Object.
- From the Filter menu, select ON1 and then Effects, NoNoise AI, or Portrait AI.
- When you’re finished editing your photo, click the Done button in Effects.
To re-edit your Smart Object layer again inside ON1, double-click on the ON1 item in the edited Smart Object layer in Photoshop. ON1 will then launch and let you adjust your previous settings or make new ones.
